You can often improve the sound from a TV’s built-in speakers by adjusting its sound settings—but there is no single best preset for every model, program, or room. Start with a dialogue-enhancement option if voices are hard to hear, then compare sound modes and adjust other controls only to address a specific problem.
Start with the problem you want to fix
Before changing anything, note your TV’s brand, model, and software generation. Feature names and menu paths vary, and a setting may not be available on every model. Use the TV’s manual or settings search if the path below does not match your screen.

Choose a familiar scene with clear speech and background music or effects. Keep the volume steady, change one setting at a time, and compare both speech intelligibility and whether voices still sound natural. This is a practical way to judge your own TV, not a guarantee that a particular mode will improve every setup.
When dialogue is hard to hear
Some programs mix music or sound effects louder than speech, so the issue may not be your TV’s speakers. A voice-focused mode is a useful first setting to try if your TV offers one.

LG: Clear Voice or Clear Voice Pro
LG says Clear Voice reduces background noise and emphasizes speech frequencies to make dialogue easier to hear. On supported models, its newer instructions place Clear Voice Pro under Settings > Sound > Select Mode. Some older models put Clear Voice under Settings > Sound > Sound Mode Settings. The option and path depend on the model and software generation. LG’s Clear Voice instructions provide model-specific guidance.
Sony: Voice Zoom or Dialogue enhancer
Some supported Sony BRAVIA models provide Voice Zoom or Dialogue enhancer. The available option can depend on the audio post-processing mode. Sony’s sound-quality instructions for Google TV describe the controls for the model families they cover; they should not be assumed to apply to every Sony TV.

Compare the voice-focused setting with its previous state using the same scene. Keep it only if speech becomes easier to follow without making voices sound unnaturally sharp or thin.
Compare sound modes rather than assuming one is best
Sound modes change how the TV processes audio. LG’s 2023 webOS 23 guide lists AI Sound or AI Sound Pro, Standard, Cinema, Clear Voice Pro, Sports, Music, and Game Optimizer. Their intended uses differ, so try the modes available on your TV with the kind of content you watch most. LG’s 2023 sound-mode guide describes those options for that platform.

For a fair comparison, replay the same dialogue at the same volume. Consider whether speech is clear, voices sound balanced, and the overall presentation suits the content. AI or content-optimized modes may behave differently from a fixed mode; neither label guarantees the best result in every situation.
Use the equalizer to adjust tone
If the sound is too boomy, thin, or harsh, an equalizer may let you adjust frequency bands. On the Sony models covered by its support page, the equalizer has seven bands from 125 Hz through 8 kHz, with a listed adjustment range of -12 to +12. These values describe that implementation, not a universal TV equalizer or a recommended preset.

Make small changes and listen again to familiar speech and music. Large boosts or cuts can make one type of content more pleasing while making other audio less natural. If your TV’s equalizer has different controls, follow its on-screen labels and model guide.
Address uneven loudness and surround effects separately
Different inputs have noticeably different volume
Sony’s Advanced Auto Volume is intended to keep volume levels consistent across input sources. On a supported model, it may help if switching between inputs produces a noticeable change in loudness. It is a level-consistency control, not a dialogue enhancer.

Surround processing changes the sense of space
Sony documents surround options of Auto, On, or Off on supported models. The feature creates virtual surround reproduction; it is distinct from voice enhancement. Try it only if you want to change the sense of immersion, and compare it with the effect off if it makes speech less clear or the sound distracting.
Find the right menu on your TV
On LG TVs, AI Sound paths vary by webOS generation, and Clear Voice Pro may be found under Sound > Select Mode on newer models or Sound Mode Settings on older ones. LG’s Clear Voice guide, AI Sound guide, and sound-menu overview cover different instructions; consult the guide for your specific model if the menu labels differ.
Settings may be missing, renamed, or moved after software updates. Manufacturer instructions explain feature purpose and navigation, but they do not establish that every listener will hear an improvement in every room. If voices remain persistently unclear or echoing after you check the available sound settings, LG recommends contacting support for a hardware check.
