There is no single “best” Chinese AI model. Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, MiniMax, ERNIE and Doubao differ in reasoning, coding, multimodal support, price, API protocol and where prompts are processed. For a documented, production-ready API, DeepSeek currently publishes the clearest context, feature and token-pricing details. For a single cloud control plane covering several vendors, Alibaba Model Studio is the most practical starting point. For privacy-sensitive work, your deployment route and contract matter more than the model’s nationality.
Use the comparison below to shortlist models, then run your own Chinese- and English-language evaluation before committing traffic or data.

What “Chinese AI models” includes
The term describes a multi-provider ecosystem rather than one platform. Alibaba’s Qwen, DeepSeek, Moonshot’s Kimi, Z.ai’s GLM, MiniMax, Baidu’s ERNIE and ByteDance’s Doubao have separate model releases, accounts, quotas and privacy terms. Alibaba Model Studio’s catalog, updated October 11, 2026, lists Qwen alongside hosted third-party DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi and MiniMax text models, plus image, audio, video, embedding and reranking categories. That makes it a routing and billing option, not proof that every model has identical controls.
Release names also change quickly. The practical set discussed here includes Qwen3, DeepSeek-R1, Kimi-K2 and GLM-4.5 open-weight lines documented in a 2025 Stanford HAI/DigiChina brief, as well as newer hosted releases such as DeepSeek V4 and GLM-5.3. Always record the exact model ID and date in an evaluation report.

Capabilities by model family
DeepSeek: the most explicit API specification
DeepSeek documents two current API models: deepseek-flash, identified as DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, and deepseek-v4-pro, identified as DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813. Both list a 1M-token context window, JSON output, tool calls, a Responses API and Anthropic-format access. Both can run in thinking or non-thinking mode. Flash includes vision; V4 Pro is documented as not supporting vision, so do not assume that a higher-priced model accepts images.
This combination is useful when an application needs long source files, structured extraction and tool invocation without writing a vendor-specific client. You still need to test latency, rate limits, reasoning reliability and output length under your own concurrency.
Qwen and Alibaba Model Studio: breadth and a unified console
Qwen is not limited to chat. Alibaba’s catalog includes text, multimodal, audio, video, embedding and reranking models. Model Studio also exposes DeepSeek, GLM, Kimi and MiniMax models, allowing one account, billing surface and governance workflow to cover several families. That can reduce integration work when you are experimenting or routing requests by task.
The convenience does not make every model equivalent. Confirm the selected model’s context window, tool and vision support, data region, quota, retention terms and price in the console for your account location. A gateway may also introduce its own logging or transfer path.

GLM: long-running software agents
Z.ai describes GLM-5.3 as a model for complex software engineering and long-running agent tasks with a 1M-token context. Its GLM-5V-Turbo description emphasizes native multimodal coding, tool calling and long-chain execution. Those properties make GLM a sensible candidate for repository-scale tasks, but an agent benchmark should measure whether it plans, edits, tests and recovers from tool errors rather than relying on the product description.
Kimi, MiniMax, ERNIE and Doubao: candidates to measure, not interchangeable winners
Coverage of Kimi reports vendor claims around reasoning, coding and multimodal performance. Similar reporting describes Doubao claims for coding, reasoning, knowledge retention and Chinese processing. MiniMax is available through Model Studio, while ERNIE remains a major Baidu family. These descriptions help you form a shortlist; they do not establish a ranking because the providers use different prompts, datasets, versions and reporting methods.
For these families, preserve the exact model ID, system prompt, temperature, tool definitions and date when testing. Otherwise a later model update can make an apparent improvement or regression impossible to reproduce.

DeepSeek’s documented endpoints
DeepSeek publishes an OpenAI-format base URL at https://api.deepseek.com and an Anthropic-format base URL at https://api.deepseek.com/anthropic. Its documentation covers JSON responses, tool calls, a Responses API and concurrency limits. This means an existing client can often be adapted by changing the base URL, model name and authentication, but you must still verify parameter support and streaming behavior.

The example illustrates the protocol shape; consult the live API documentation for the current path, required headers, model availability and account limits. Do not place a production key in browser code, logs or source control.
Using a multi-model catalog
Model Studio can let you call Qwen and hosted third-party models from one control plane. This is useful for A/B tests and fallback routing, but it can obscure differences in pricing, quotas and residency. Record which provider actually served each request and whether traffic crossed a gateway. For regulated data, a single dashboard is not a substitute for a written data-processing agreement.
Self-hosted and open-weight routes
The Stanford HAI/DigiChina 2025 brief records open-weight positioning for Qwen3, DeepSeek-R1, Kimi-K2 and GLM-4.5. “Open weight” does not mean unrestricted commercial use or zero operational cost. Before deployment, check the exact license, permitted uses, model files, hardware requirement, quantization quality, security updates and any restrictions on redistribution. In a self-hosted setup, your organization controls inference logs, access controls, backups and geographic storage.

| Model and token type | Off-peak price | Peak price | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| DeepSeek Flash input | $0.003 | $0.006 | Cache hit |
| DeepSeek Flash input | $0.15 | $0.30 | Cache miss |
| DeepSeek Flash output | $0.60 | $1.20 | Generated tokens |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro input | $0.022 | $0.044 | Cache hit |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro input | $0.66 | $1.32 | Cache miss |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro output | $1.98 | $3.96 | Generated tokens |
Both documented models have 1M-token context. A workload with repeated prefixes can benefit greatly from cache-hit pricing, while a first-pass workload pays cache-miss rates. Measure the ratio of cached to uncached input instead of multiplying a headline rate by total tokens. For other families, do not infer a “cheapest” winner from model quality claims: prices, minimum commitments, regional taxes, quotas and gateway markups vary. Check the current console or contract for the exact model and region.

What DeepSeek’s policy says
DeepSeek’s privacy policy, last updated February 10, 2026, says it collects personal data that users provide, data collected automatically and data from other sources. It states that prompts, uploaded files, photos and chat history may be collected; inputs may be used to improve and develop services and to train and improve technology; and retention varies by purpose. The policy also says: “To provide you with our services, we directly collect, process and store your Personal Data in People’s Republic of China.” It warns that the services are not designed or intended to process sensitive personal data.
Those statements apply to the hosted service described by the policy. They do not automatically describe an on-premises or self-hosted deployment, where your operator becomes responsible for telemetry, logs, backups and access.

How to choose a model for your workload
- Define representative tasks. Include Chinese and English prompts, code generation and repair, long-context retrieval, structured JSON, tool calls, image or document inputs and refusal or safety cases relevant to your product.
- Freeze the test conditions. Record model ID, date, system prompt, temperature, maximum output, tools, context size and whether reasoning mode is enabled.
- Measure quality and operations. Score correctness, citation or extraction accuracy, test pass rate and Chinese terminology. Record median and tail latency, timeout and tool-call failure rates, output tokens and total tokens.
- Model the bill. Include cache-hit assumptions, off-peak versus peak windows, retries, context growth, gateway fees and taxes. A low input price can be outweighed by expensive output or poor cache reuse.
- Verify access constraints. Confirm API protocol, payment method, region, quotas, concurrency, streaming, vision support and whether your required model is available to your account.
- Complete a privacy review. Read retention, training-use, deletion, subprocessor and cross-border-transfer terms. Classify data before sending it; redact secrets and personal data when possible.
- Run a failure and exit test. Test rate-limit handling, provider outages, malformed JSON, tool errors and model-version changes. Keep an abstraction layer so you can switch models without rewriting business logic.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
Choosing from a leaderboard alone
Vendor claims about reasoning or coding use different datasets and may describe a different release from the one available in your region. Replace a single winner with a task-weighted scorecard and include at least one non-vendor baseline.
Assuming a long context window guarantees retrieval quality
A 1M-token limit describes capacity, not attention or factual recall. Test needle-in-a-haystack retrieval, conflicting instructions, repeated boilerplate and very long code repositories. Trim or summarize context when accuracy falls.
Ignoring protocol differences
“OpenAI-compatible” does not guarantee identical tool schemas, reasoning fields, streaming events or error codes. Build contract tests for JSON validity, tool arguments, retries and token accounting before switching providers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sending confidential data to a consumer endpoint
Hosted policies may permit collection, retention or training use, and processing may occur in China. Use redaction, synthetic data, an enterprise contract or a self-hosted route when your risk assessment requires it.
Confusing open weights with zero responsibility
Self-hosting removes a vendor’s direct access to prompts but leaves you responsible for infrastructure security, model-license compliance, logging, abuse controls, patching and hardware costs.
Practical verdict
Start with DeepSeek when you need a clearly documented, long-context API and can accept its published China-based processing terms; choose Flash when vision and lower token prices fit the workload, and evaluate V4 Pro when higher output capability justifies its cost. Use Qwen or Alibaba Model Studio when multimodal breadth and one multi-provider console matter. Put GLM on the shortlist for repository-scale agent experiments, and test Kimi, MiniMax, ERNIE and Doubao on your own Chinese-language and domain tasks rather than accepting cross-vendor marketing claims. The final decision should be the model that meets your measured quality, latency, cost and data-governance requirements—not the model with the most impressive release announcement.
