Chimera is a decision layer for self-driving laboratories that turns several competing chemical goals into one score an optimizer can use. You rank the objectives—such as yield, selectivity, energy use or sample consumption—and specify how much deterioration in a higher-ranked objective is acceptable. Chimera then searches for Pareto-optimal experimental conditions while preserving that order of importance.
This matters because chemistry rarely offers one setting that maximizes everything. A reaction may produce more product at the cost of selectivity; a high-performance analytical method may consume more sample; and an optical material may transport energy efficiently only within a narrow composition range. Chimera makes those compromises explicit instead of hiding them inside arbitrary weights.

What Chimera is
Chimera is a hierarchy-based achievement scalarizing function introduced by Florian Häse, Loïc M. Roch and Alán Aspuru-Guzik in a 2018 Chemical Science paper (volume 9, issue 39, pages 7642–7655; DOI 10.1039/c8sc02239a). It is designed for optimization problems in which each experiment or simulation is expensive and several objectives must be considered at once.
Instead of asking an optimizer to maximize a single raw measurement, Chimera accepts an ordered list of objectives and a tolerance for each level. It converts those preferences into one smooth merit function. A conventional single-objective optimizer can then select the next experiment, while Chimera recalculates the merit as new objective values arrive.

The method is not an autonomous scientist that discovers what a laboratory should value. The hierarchy is supplied by a researcher. Chimera formalizes that preference, quantifies acceptable compromises and identifies conditions that fit it.
Why chemical objectives conflict
Many campaigns have no universal winner. Increasing reaction yield can reduce selectivity, so a condition that makes more product may also create more by-products. In process development, minimizing solvent or sample use may conflict with maximizing signal. In materials design, transport efficiency, stability and composition constraints can pull the search in different directions.
A simple weighted average often obscures these choices. A large numerical range in one objective can dominate the score, and changing units or scaling can alter the result. A strict primary objective may also be sacrificed for small gains in secondary objectives. Chimera takes a different approach: improve the highest-priority objective until its allowed tolerance is reached, then use lower-priority objectives to decide among acceptable alternatives.

1. Rank the objectives
List objectives from most important to least important. For example:
- Maximize isolated yield.
- Among conditions with acceptable yield, maximize selectivity.
- Among those, minimize sample consumption.
The ordering is substantive. Reversing yield and selectivity can lead to a different Pareto-optimal condition even when the experimental data are identical.

2. Set relative tolerances
For each level, state how much performance can be given up before a lower-priority improvement is worth considering. A tolerance is not a universal chemical constant; it expresses the laboratory’s acceptable trade-off. A tight yield tolerance tells Chimera that selectivity gains are not worth a noticeable yield loss. A looser tolerance permits broader compromises.
3. Observe objective values
Run an experiment or simulation at a proposed set of parameters and record every objective. The method does not require a detailed prior model of each objective surface, which is useful when response behavior is poorly understood.

Chimera transforms the ordered objectives and tolerances into a smooth achievement scalarizing function. The function gives one merit value to each observed condition while retaining the priority structure. Smoothness allows standard single-objective optimization algorithms to operate without a bespoke multi-objective search engine.
5. Select the next condition
The optimizer proposes the next experimental parameters by seeking a higher scalarized merit. After the experiment, Chimera evaluates the new objective values and updates the search.
6. Stop at a practical boundary
The loop continues until the evaluation budget is exhausted, the desired compromise is found, or another laboratory stopping rule is met. Because each evaluation may involve instrument time, reagents and analyst attention, setting a realistic budget is part of the optimization design.

The self-driving laboratory loop
In an autonomous platform, Chimera sits between the experiment scheduler and the optimization algorithm. A typical cycle looks like this:

- Execute: the robot prepares samples, runs the reaction or analysis and records instrument data.
- Measure: convert raw outputs into objective values, with units and quality checks attached.
- Score: Chimera computes the scalar merit for the new observation and all relevant prior observations.
- Propose: the optimizer selects a candidate within safety, instrument and chemical constraints.
- Repeat: continue until the budget or stopping criterion is reached.
Objective extraction is a practical dependency. If an HPLC result is delayed, corrupted or reported with inconsistent units, the scalarizer cannot make a reliable decision. A production workflow therefore needs validation rules, handling for failed experiments and explicit bounds on every controllable variable.
What “Pareto-optimal” means here
A condition is Pareto-dominated if another condition is at least as good on every objective and strictly better on one. Pareto-optimal conditions are not dominated in that way. There can be many of them, each representing a different compromise.
Chimera does not collapse the Pareto front into one permanently correct answer. It uses the stated hierarchy and tolerances to select a point on that front. Changing the order or the acceptable degradation can therefore produce a different, still Pareto-optimal solution. This gives researchers a way to perform transparent “what if” analyses: keep the data fixed, change the priority policy, and see which operating point follows.

Four-pigment excitonic-system design
A second demonstration used inverse design of a four-pigment excitonic system for efficient energy transport. The optimizer searched design parameters while Chimera encoded the relative importance of the objectives. These computational demonstrations show how the method can expose alternative compromises without requiring a full mechanistic model of every response surface.
Virtual HPLC and sample-use comparison
Chemistry World described a related virtual self-driving-laboratory comparison in which the goal was to maximize an HPLC response while minimizing sample use. In that test, Chimera reached the stated goal quickly and with fewer experiments than c-ASF. This is a result for that virtual comparison, not a universal percentage reduction or a guarantee for wet-lab campaigns.
Chimera compared with other scalarization choices
| Decision aspect | Chimera | c-ASF or a simple weighted approach |
|---|---|---|
| How priorities are expressed | Explicit hierarchy from highest to lowest priority | Priority treatment depends on the specific method; a basic weighted sum uses simultaneous numerical weights |
| Tolerance control | Relative tolerances specify acceptable degradation at each level | Not stated for c-ASF in the cited comparison; weighted sums require weights and scaling choices |
| Objective evaluations | Designed for expensive evaluations and can be placed over a single-objective optimizer | Evaluation cost depends on the implementation; no general count is established |
| Prior model knowledge | Does not require detailed prior knowledge of each objective surface | Not stated as a universal property of c-ASF |
| Interpretability | The selected compromise can be traced to the declared order and tolerances | Interpretation depends on the chosen scalarization and parameterization |
| Reachable Pareto points | Changing hierarchy or tolerances can lead to different Pareto-optimal points | Depends on the method and settings |
The table does not imply that Chimera dominates every alternative. Its advantage is policy transparency: a chemist can explain why a secondary gain was accepted or rejected by referring to a stated tolerance rather than an opaque score.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does multi-objective optimization reduce experiments?
It can, when each experiment is expensive and the scalarized search guides the optimizer toward useful compromises instead of optimizing objectives in separate campaigns. The virtual HPLC comparison reported fewer experiments for Chimera than c-ASF, and the authors designed the method for settings with limited evaluations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no general percentage speed-up, fixed experiment reduction or economic saving established for all laboratories. The number of experiments depends on the optimizer underneath Chimera, parameter bounds, noise, objective difficulty, failed runs, starting points and the quality of the hierarchy. A poorly chosen priority order can send the search toward an unhelpful region just as efficiently as a good one.

How to choose priorities responsibly
Separate hard constraints from preferences
If a condition is unsafe, illegal or incompatible with an instrument, encode it as a constraint or exclude it from the search. Do not rely on a tolerance to prevent the optimizer from proposing an unacceptable experiment.
Use measurable objectives
Define exactly how yield, selectivity, signal, sample use or energy transport will be calculated. Include the measurement window, normalization and treatment of missing data. Ambiguous objectives produce ambiguous compromises.
Set tolerances from decisions, not convenience
Ask what loss in the primary objective would change a real laboratory decision. A tolerance based only on numerical scale may not reflect process value. Record the rationale so another researcher can audit or revise it.
Check sensitivity
After an initial campaign, rerun the decision analysis with plausible alternative hierarchies or tolerances. If small preference changes move the result dramatically, report that sensitivity rather than presenting one operating point as uniquely optimal.
Failure modes and practical safeguards
- Bad objective direction: verify whether each metric is to be maximized or minimized before experiments begin.
- Incompatible scales: use the scalarization implementation’s documented normalization and keep units consistent across runs.
- Noisy measurements: replicate or quality-check measurements where noise could change the priority comparison.
- Unreachable tolerances: if the primary target is physically impossible, lower-priority objectives may never influence the search. Reassess targets after pilot data.
- Failed or unsafe proposals: enforce chemical, hardware and safety constraints outside the scalar merit function.
- Changing preferences mid-campaign: changing priorities changes the decision problem. Version the hierarchy and annotate which observations were collected under each policy.
Software, licensing and provenance
The authors provide Chimera as open-source research software in the Aspuru-Guzik Group GitHub repository. The repository identifies the Chemical Science paper and uses the MIT License. Users should check the repository’s current documentation and compatibility before integrating it with instrument-control software; the 2018 publication establishes the method, not a commercial product or a turnkey laboratory platform.
Who should use Chimera?
Chimera is a strong fit when experiments or simulations are costly, several objectives matter, and the team can state a defensible priority order. It is particularly useful when response surfaces are not well characterized and when different stakeholders need an interpretable explanation of the chosen compromise.
It is less suitable as a substitute for defining safety limits, validating analytical measurements or deciding scientific values. Those remain human and engineering responsibilities. The algorithm can search efficiently within a declared decision policy; it cannot determine whether that policy reflects the real purpose of a project.
Bottom line
Chimera makes competing chemical goals operational: rank the objectives, assign acceptable tolerances, scalarize the hierarchy and let a conventional optimizer choose the next experiment. Its demonstrations show that this approach can find useful Pareto-optimal compromises with expensive evaluations, including a virtual comparison in which it used fewer experiments than c-ASF. The result is not an automatic discovery of priorities, but a transparent way to turn human priorities into repeatable decisions in a self-driving laboratory.
