In a 2022 laboratory study, extracts from about one-third of 34 everyday plastic products promoted fat-cell formation in a mouse cell model. The result shows adipogenic activity in the tested mixtures under laboratory conditions; it does not prove that ordinary plastic use causes obesity in people.
What the researchers tested
Johannes Völker, Felicity Ashcroft, Åsa Vedøy, and Martin Wagner examined chemical mixtures extracted from 34 plastic consumer products. They analyzed the extracts using non-target high-resolution mass spectrometry and assessed their biological effects in 3T3-L1 cells, a mouse preadipocyte model. In this assay, preadipocytes can proliferate and differentiate into adipocytes, or fat cells. Some product extracts promoted these effects; the cells also became larger and contained more triglycerides than cells treated with rosiglitazone, a reference compound. That comparison describes the laboratory assay, not an effect in people.
What the results show
- The researchers detected 55,300 chemical features in the product extracts. These are analytical signals, not 55,300 identified chemicals.
- They tentatively identified 629 unique compounds; the identifications were not all confirmed.
- Eleven of the tentatively identified compounds were known metabolism-disrupting chemicals.
- About one-third of the 34 extracts showed adipogenic effects in the cell model.
The findings point to biological activity in some tested mixtures. Because the cells were exposed to extracts containing multiple chemicals, the experiment does not identify one confirmed compound as the cause of the observed effects.

What is known about the possible mechanisms
Most extracts did not activate the PPARγ and glucocorticoid receptor pathways assessed by the researchers. The authors infer that other mechanisms, likely involving unknown metabolism-disrupting chemicals, may account for much of the activity. This does not establish a specific mechanism or a single causal chemical.
A separate 2023 preprint examined 36 plastic food-contact articles from five countries. It reported activity involving PXR, PPARγ, estrogen receptor alpha, and androgen receptor signaling, as well as product-specific chemical fingerprints. Its samples and receptor-activity endpoints differ from the 2022 adipocyte experiment, so it is relevant context rather than a direct replication. What the study does not establish
- Effects in people: The outcome was measured in a mouse cell line, not in people.
- Everyday exposure: The experiment does not establish how much of these chemicals people encounter during ordinary use, by what route, or for how long.
- A cause of obesity: Adipogenic activity in cultured cells is not proof that plastic use causes obesity in humans.
- A specific culprit: The tested extracts were mixtures, and many compound identities were tentative.
- A safer choice: The researchers did not compare consumer products for safety or test whether a particular alternative or behavior reduces exposure.
The authors described daily-use plastics as a potentially underestimated environmental factor contributing to obesity. That is their interpretation of laboratory mixture results, not a finding from a human clinical or epidemiological study.
