Hoxton Farms is developing cultivated animal fat as an ingredient for food products, including meat substitutes. The company grows fat from animal cells rather than raising animals for the fat. Its goal is to help meat alternatives gain some of the taste, aroma, texture and cooking qualities associated with animal fat. That is a development goal, not proof that the ingredient is approved or available to consumers.
What is Hoxton Farms making?
Hoxton Farms describes itself as a biomanufacturing company that grows real animal fat from cells without animals. Chief of staff Annie Conde gave that description to the UK Parliament’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee on 13 January 2026, saying: “Hoxton Farms is first and foremost an advanced bio-manufacturing company.” She added: “In a nutshell, we grow real animal fat without the animals.” The committee transcript provides the source for both statements.

The intended product is an ingredient for food makers, rather than a standalone meat substitute sold directly to shoppers. Hoxton Farms’ team page describes its approach as combining mathematical modelling and biotechnology to develop scalable fats. The company’s stated aim is to supply fat that can contribute sensory and cooking properties to meat alternatives; claims about how well it achieves those aims should be understood as company claims, not independently established product results. Hoxton Farms’ team page describes its work.

Fat matters to the experience of eating meat: it can influence flavor, aroma, mouthfeel and what happens during cooking. Plant-based meat makers can use plant oils and other ingredients, but those ingredients do not necessarily behave or taste like animal fat. Hoxton Farms is pursuing a different approach: cultivate animal fat cells and use the resulting fat as a food ingredient. The company’s intended role for it is to help meat alternatives better reproduce those qualities.
#1 Best Overall
This is not the same as growing a whole cut of meat. The focus described in the available sources is cultivated fat, which could be formulated into a food product by a manufacturer. The sources do not establish that Hoxton Farms has demonstrated a particular taste, texture, nutrition profile, price or environmental advantage in a finished product.
What is known about the production approach?
A Hoxton Farms-authored abstract in the 2024 International Scientific Conference on Cultured Meat abstract book discusses porcine cultivated-fat production using immortalised preadipocytes and suspension culture. This offers a glimpse of the technical work: the company is studying how to grow fat-producing cells in a controlled production process.

A conference abstract is not a demonstration of commercial-scale output, a confirmed manufacturing cost, or independent evidence of consumer-facing performance. Hoxton Farms and Mitsui Chemicals also have a strategic partnership described in the Good Food Institute’s 2026 State of the Industry report. The report says the partners plan to scale biomanufacturing infrastructure across Asia Pacific, with potential applications spanning cultivated food production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and sustainable materials. That describes the partnership’s scope; it does not establish that products in those categories have reached the market.

The available regulatory evidence shows a submission, not an approval. A report published on 4 November 2025 said Hoxton Farms submitted an application to Singapore’s Food Agency seeking market approval for its cultivated-fat ingredient, Hoxton Fat. The report on the Singapore filing does not establish that the agency subsequently approved the ingredient.

- No hydrogenated fats or high fructose corn syrup allowed in any food
- No bleached or bromated flour
- No synthetic nitrates or nitrites
Nor do the available sources establish that Hoxton Fat is on sale to consumers, sold through a retailer or available on Amazon. Its described commercial role is as a potential ingredient for food manufacturers, so a consumer purchase comparison is premature. The reported Singapore filing is a regulatory milestone, not evidence of consumer availability or approval in other markets.
