Researchers used a molecular iron porphyrin catalyst with visible light, a light-absorbing sensitizer, and a sacrificial electron donor. In the 2017 study, direct carbon-dioxide reduction mainly produced carbon monoxide; methane came from a separate, two-stage process. A 2018 follow-up made methane from CO₂ in one reaction system, but its strongest reported methane results started with carbon monoxide instead.
What the iron catalyst actually does
The catalyst was a specific iron-containing molecule: iron tetraphenylporphyrin functionalized with trimethylammonio groups, known as Fe-p-TMA. It was not generic iron metal. In the reported photochemical systems, visible light energized a photosensitizer, which helped transfer electrons into the reaction; a sacrificial donor supplied electrons. The reaction also required a solvent and controlled conditions.

Turning CO₂ into methane is chemically demanding: the conversion requires eight electrons per molecule of methane. The studies show how a molecular catalyst can participate in that chemistry under laboratory conditions. They do not show that sunlight by itself, or an iron surface by itself, converts CO₂ into methane.
Why the 2017 result used two stages
Rao and colleagues’ 2017 Nature study used visible light, a photosensitizer, and a sacrificial electron donor in acetonitrile at ambient temperature and pressure. The system was reported to operate stably over several days. Its direct photoreduction of CO₂ mainly produced carbon monoxide (CO), not methane.

To make methane, the researchers used a two-pot sequence: they first reduced CO₂ to CO, then reduced that CO to methane. For this staged route, the paper reported methane selectivity of up to 82% and a quantum yield of 0.18%. Those figures describe the two-pot method, not direct one-pot conversion of CO₂. What changed in the 2018 follow-up
In a 2018 Journal of the American Chemical Society study, Rao and colleagues paired Fe-p-TMA with an organic phenoxazine sensitizer called Phen2. The system used visible light above 435 nm and a tertiary-amine sacrificial donor.

With CO₂ as the starting gas
In the CO₂-fed experiment, the authors reported methane turnover number (TON) 29 and CO TON 140 after 102 hours, with methane selectivity of 15%. TON is the number of product molecules formed per catalyst molecule over the reported experiment; it is not a percentage yield or a measure of commercial productivity.
With CO as the starting gas
The highest methane figures in that paper came from a different feedstock. In CO-saturated solution with optimized acid conditions, the system reached methane TON 80, 85% selectivity, and a quantum yield of 0.47% after 102 hours. Because the feed was CO rather than CO₂, these results cannot be presented as the system’s best direct CO₂-to-methane performance. Read the 2018 JACS paper.

Selectivity, quantum yield, and turnover number describe different aspects of a reaction and should not be treated as interchangeable efficiency figures. The table also distinguishes the starting gas: a high result from CO feed does not establish the same performance from CO₂ feed. The quantum yields reported in these papers are measurements for their specified laboratory photochemical systems, not commercial solar-to-fuel efficiencies.

The 2018 study found that methane production disappeared when any one of several key components was omitted: iron catalyst, organic sensitizer, sacrificial donor, CO₂, or light. Acid type and concentration also shifted the balance between methane and hydrogen. This dependence on multiple components and conditions is central to understanding the result: light powers a coordinated chemical system rather than triggering a simple reaction at an iron surface. The JACS paper reports the component and condition tests.

What the papers do—and do not—establish
These studies are laboratory demonstrations of visible-light photochemistry. The cited papers do not establish an outdoor solar installation, a consumer device, industrial-scale methane production, or a lifecycle analysis showing net climate benefit. They also do not demonstrate that the process can operate using only CO₂, sunlight, and iron: the studied reactions relied on sensitizers, sacrificial electron donors, solvent, and controlled laboratory conditions.
