Check Your Versions Before Trusting a Migration Guide

A migration guide applies only to the product versions, runtime, configuration, and environment it covers. Verify that scope before following its steps.

A migration guide is accurate only for the product, versions, runtime, configuration, and environment it covers. Before following one, verify that its source-to-target path matches your setup—and check release-specific instructions for every version you cross. A guide can remain available online even when its steps no longer apply to your situation.

Why a migration guide can stop applying to your setup

Migration instructions are conditional procedures, not universal recipes. A change in runtime requirements, configuration defaults, or breaking behavior can make an older step incomplete or unsafe for a newer target. Even a current guide may cover a different starting version or deployment than yours.

That is why the practical question is: “Is this migration guide still accurate for my version?” Check the guide’s stated scope against your exact source and target versions before treating its instructions as applicable.

Verify the migration path before making changes

  1. Record your starting point. Write down the product and exact installed version, the intended target version, the runtime, and relevant configuration or dependencies.
  2. Match the guide to the transition. Check the product version and release scope, prerequisites, and any publication or update date shown. Confirm that the documented source and target include yours.
  3. Check every intervening release. If the upgrade skips versions, read the applicable migration guides and release notes for the versions in between. Apache Tomcat explicitly advises consulting guides for the versions crossed.
  4. Review runtime, compatibility, and changed behavior. Look for required runtime versions, deprecated or obsolete APIs, changed defaults, and manual migration steps relevant to your application.
  5. Compare configuration with the target release. Identify custom settings and compare them with the target version’s stock configuration. Do not assume old configuration files can be carried over unchanged.
  6. Run checks in the intended environment. Treat automated tools as aids with defined coverage, and rerun environment-dependent checks if the configuration changes.
  7. Plan recovery and validate the result. Before changing production data or configuration, define a rollback approach appropriate to the platform and data risk. Test application behavior after each significant migration step.

What product-specific migration guidance looks like

Apache Tomcat: major and minor upgrades are different

Tomcat distinguishes major-version upgrades from minor upgrades. For a major upgrade, its guidance recommends starting from a stock installation and adapting configuration, rather than copying old configuration files wholesale. The project states: “When migrating from one major Tomcat version to another (e.g. from Tomcat 9 to Tomcat 10, or from Tomcat 10 to Tomcat 11), you should not copy the configuration files from the old version to the new version.” For minor upgrades, existing configuration may often remain usable, but the project still advises checking for changed defaults and new configuration elements. These are Tomcat-specific instructions, not a universal procedure for other software.

Nevis ID Manager: the guide names its version span and runtime requirement

Nevis’s migration guide covers LTS-2024 (8.2405.x) to LTS-2026 (8.2607.x). It calls for manual steps based on the installation and environment, and recommends moving first to the initial LTS-2026 release, then to the latest LTS-2026 version. For nevisIDM 8.2607.x, the guide says Java 25 is required and Java 21 or older is insufficient. The same guide’s dated history records earlier requirement changes, including a Java 21 minimum introduced in 2025 and a MariaDB JDBC URL change. Those requirements apply to the specified Nevis versions; they should not be generalized to other products.

Microsoft .NET Framework: runtime compatibility is not the same as code migration

Microsoft’s migration resources direct developers to review framework versions and dependencies, application compatibility, obsolete class-library APIs, and new features. Some version changes require code changes; some applications can run on a later framework version without recompilation. Check compatibility and dependencies for the application in question rather than assuming that a successful runtime launch proves the migration is complete.

Migration tools can miss changes outside their coverage

A tool’s output is useful only within the checks it performs and the conditions under which it runs. AWS’s current AWS CLI v1-to-v2 migration guidance illustrates the difference between runtime-aware checks and static analysis:

AWS CLI aid What AWS says it checks Important limit
Upgrade debug mode AWS says it can detect 15 of 16 documented breaking changes by checking commands as they execute. Findings depend on the execution environment; behavior not exercised there may not be covered.
Standalone migration tool AWS says its static linter for bash scripts detects 7 of 16 documented breaking changes. It does not detect behavior determined at runtime.

The 15-of-16 and 7-of-16 figures are AWS’s coverage comparison in its AWS CLI migration guidance, accessed in 2026; they describe these AWS tools and documented changes, not migration software generally. AWS also notes that upgrade debug findings are relevant to the environment where the mode ran and that later AWS CLI configuration changes may require verification again.

Why the link and section you rely on matter

A 2026 paper, How Do Developers Use Migration Guides? A Case Study of Log4j, reports that its preliminary survey found release notes for 92.08% of sampled libraries with breaking changes, compared with migration guides for 27.72%. In its Log4j case study, 82.81% of guide references linked to the guide as a whole rather than to a specific section. The authors also report that developers consult guides during later maintenance, not only during major upgrades.

These figures describe the paper’s sample and Log4j case study, not every software ecosystem. They do underscore a practical habit: locate the exact release-specific instructions relevant to your change instead of relying on a broad guide link or assuming that an old reference covers later maintenance.

When you have more than one migration route

Compare viable paths against the conditions that determine whether their instructions fit your system:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Supported source and target versions, including required intermediate releases.
  • Runtime and dependency requirements at each stage.
  • Manual configuration or code changes versus changes covered by automation.
  • What each migration tool checks and whether its checks depend on runtime behavior or a particular environment.
  • Configuration or data transformations, and how you will validate them.
  • Platform-specific downtime and rollback requirements, which must be checked for your own deployment.

A shorter path is not automatically safer: it may cross more undocumented assumptions or skip a required intermediate step. Use the product’s official guidance for the exact path you intend to take.
