Yes. AirPlay can work without internet and, on supported devices, without an existing Wi-Fi network. The key distinction is that AirPlay still needs a way for the sender and receiver to communicate: that can be the same local Wi-Fi network or a temporary peer-to-peer connection.
Does AirPlay need Wi-Fi or internet?
Not always. If a router provides a local Wi-Fi network but has no internet service, devices on that network may still communicate with each other for AirPlay. Apple’s standard setup instructions tell you to connect the sending device and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network; an internet connection is not the same thing as that local network.

If there is no existing Wi-Fi network, compatible devices may use peer-to-peer AirPlay to discover and connect directly. Apple’s deployment guidance says devices can use AirPlay without joining an existing network, but this option depends on the specific hardware, software and discovery settings.
Same-Wi-Fi and peer-to-peer AirPlay compared
| What to check | Same-Wi-Fi AirPlay | Peer-to-peer AirPlay |
|---|---|---|
| Existing network | Sender and receiver join the same local Wi-Fi network, following Apple’s standard consumer setup. | No existing infrastructure network is required for supported devices to discover and connect. |
| Compatibility | Follow the setup guidance for the specific sender and receiver. | Apple lists Apple TV HD with tvOS 9 or later, Apple TV 4K with tvOS 11 or later, and iPhone, iPad and Mac devices from late 2012 or later running the latest operating system version. |
| Internet content | A local network does not supply internet access to services that need to fetch content online. | A direct connection also does not supply internet access; internet-provided content may still require connectivity. |
| Discovery and access | Devices must be discoverable and permitted to connect. | Peer-to-peer discovery and device authentication must work; receiver access settings may also apply. |
Apple’s compatibility thresholds are from its published deployment guidance; check the exact Apple TV model and installed software. Do not assume that every AirPlay-compatible third-party television supports peer-to-peer operation. Confirm that feature with the television’s manufacturer.

What happens when there is no router?
Peer-to-peer AirPlay can let a compatible sender and receiver connect directly, without either joining an existing infrastructure network. Apple describes Bonjour, Bluetooth Low Energy advertising and peer-to-peer discovery as ways devices can find an AirPlay receiver. In the peer-to-peer case, devices create or join a temporary direct network.
Apple summarizes the capability in its deployment guide: “To use AirPlay, devices don’t need to be on the same network, or on any network at all.” This describes supported discovery and connection methods, not a guarantee that every AirPlay receiver can connect this way.

What can you play offline?
A local AirPlay connection does not make online content available. A photo or video already stored on the sending device can be sent over the local connection, while a movie or show that an app must fetch from the internet may still need an internet connection. Apple encourages internet access for software updates and internet-provided content; the offline behavior of individual apps depends on those apps and their content.

If a local Wi-Fi network is available
- Connect the sender and AirPlay receiver to the same Wi-Fi network, as Apple’s standard setup recommends.
- Open the locally available video or other content, or start screen mirroring, and select the receiver from the AirPlay controls.
- If the receiver does not appear, check that both devices are powered on, nearby and updated, then confirm they are still on the same Wi-Fi network.
If there is no existing Wi-Fi network
- Check whether the receiver and sender meet Apple’s published peer-to-peer compatibility requirements: Apple TV HD with tvOS 9 or later, Apple TV 4K with tvOS 11 or later, and an iPhone, iPad or Mac from late 2012 or later running the latest operating system version.
- Make sure AirPlay is enabled and the receiver’s access settings allow the sender to connect. For a third-party television, verify peer-to-peer support for that exact model with its manufacturer.
- Bring the devices near each other, open the sender’s AirPlay controls and try to select the receiver. Discovery can depend on the supported connection method and settings.
- Respond to any passcode prompt on the sender. It is an access-control step, not a sign that an internet connection is required.
Why the receiver may not appear
- Unsupported peer-to-peer hardware or software: The Apple TV or sending device may not meet Apple’s published requirements, or may not be running the required software.
- Third-party TV limitations: AirPlay support alone does not establish peer-to-peer support. Check the exact television model with its manufacturer.
- Network mismatch: In the standard setup, the sender and receiver need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Discovery or access settings: AirPlay settings, device authentication or receiver permissions can prevent a connection or require a passcode.
- Distance, power or software: Confirm both devices are on, nearby and updated. For standard Wi-Fi setup, Apple also recommends checking that they share the same network.
- Online-only content: If the connection works but a stream will not play, the app may need internet access to retrieve it.
Apple’s guidance
Apple’s consumer instructions describe connecting the sender and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network for video streaming or screen mirroring. Its deployment guidance adds peer-to-peer discovery and the compatible-device requirements above. For receiver-specific access controls, Apple also documents options for who can stream and whether a password is required.
