“Shot with IMAX” describes how footage was captured; “Filmed for IMAX” is a broader label for a movie prepared or positioned for The IMAX Experience. A film can be both. Neither label by itself tells you how much of the movie will use an expanded aspect ratio, so check the title’s specific format and runtime details.
What is the difference between Shot with IMAX and Filmed for IMAX?
The phrases answer different questions. “Shot with IMAX” is about production: the film used IMAX cameras, which may be IMAX film cameras or IMAX-certified digital cameras, depending on the title. “Filmed for IMAX” is an IMAX program or release designation. IMAX title materials may describe camera choices as well as work on the presentation, such as expanded aspect ratio, Digital Media Remastering (DMR), or sound.

The labels can overlap. For example, IMAX describes Oppenheimer as Filmed for IMAX and says it was shot for The IMAX Experience with IMAX Film Cameras (IMAX’s Oppenheimer page). Its wording shows that Filmed for IMAX does not mean the movie used only certified digital cameras.
Does Filmed for IMAX mean the whole movie is in an expanded aspect ratio?
No. The designation alone does not establish that every minute uses an expanded aspect ratio. IMAX’s own title descriptions give different amounts and formats, so look for the specific ratio and runtime or proportion stated for the film.

| Film | What IMAX says | What that detail tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) | Filmed for IMAX; shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras; over 45 minutes in IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio. (IMAX film page) | The camera description and expanded-image duration are separate specifics; the stated duration is not the whole runtime. |
| Oppenheimer (2023) | Filmed for IMAX; shot for The IMAX Experience with IMAX Film Cameras. (IMAX film page) | The label can apply to a production using IMAX film cameras, not only digital cameras. |
| Resident Evil (2026) | Filmed for IMAX; shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras and enhanced frame by frame with proprietary DMR; nearly one third of the film in IMAX’s exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio. (IMAX film page) | The description specifies both image processing and a fraction of the film with expanded image; it does not promise the entire movie is expanded. |
| F1: The Movie | IMAX Corporation reported more than a dozen newly designed IMAX-certified digital cameras, an entirely 1.90:1 expanded-aspect-ratio presentation, and a custom sound mix for IMAX theatres. (IMAX Corporation release) | This title’s reported presentation is more extensive than a partial expanded-ratio runtime, illustrating why title-specific details matter. |
What details should you check for a particular movie?
- Camera format: Look for an explicit statement that the film used IMAX Film Cameras or IMAX-certified digital cameras. The general label does not specify which.
- Expanded-image coverage: Find the aspect ratio and whether IMAX gives a duration, a fraction of the film, or says the presentation is entirely in that ratio.
- Other IMAX work: Check whether the title description names DMR, image finishing, or a custom sound mix. These are additional details, not meanings you can assume from the label alone.
For example, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s page gives both the camera type and a duration for 1.90:1 footage, while Resident Evil’s page adds DMR and describes expanded-aspect-ratio coverage as nearly one third. Those specifics provide a clearer picture of a release than the Filmed for IMAX designation alone.
