If Check for updates is greyed out in Windows 11, first check whether the PC is managed by a work or school organization. An administrator policy can disable Windows Update controls. If the PC is not managed, run Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help, restart, and try again. The symptom alone does not identify the cause.
1. Check whether an organization manages Windows Update
Open Settings > Windows Update. Look for a notice that some settings are managed by your organization or for an organization name. Microsoft documents a policy named Remove access to use all Windows update features, which can disable the Check for updates option.

If this is a work or school PC, contact its IT administrator and ask them to review the Windows Update policies applied to the device. Do not try to remove organization policies yourself: they may be required by your organization, and changing them can conflict with its configuration.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
For a PC that is not organization-managed, Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help. You can also reach the troubleshooter through Settings:

- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run, then follow the prompts.
- Restart the PC after the troubleshooter finishes.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and try Check for updates again.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance is to rerun the troubleshooter or follow its general Windows Update troubleshooting steps if the problem continues: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows.
3. If the button works but an update fails
These checks address update failures generally; they do not establish why a greyed-out button is disabled. If you can select Check for updates but Windows cannot complete the update, Microsoft recommends checking the basics:
- Confirm the PC has an internet connection.
- Make sure you have administrator access.
- Disconnect external hardware that is not needed for the update.
See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for further steps.

4. Understand what pausing updates does
Windows 11 allows updates to be paused temporarily. Microsoft says you can choose an end date up to 35 days from the current date. When the pause ends, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates; resuming updates manually also triggers a check. Pausing alone does not establish why the Check for updates control is greyed out. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 update pause instructions.
Why the cause may vary
A disabled control can be caused by a policy restriction, but the appearance of the button by itself does not prove that an update service is broken, updates are paused, or the registry is corrupt. On an individual PC, the cause depends on details such as its Windows build, management enrollment, and applied policies. If the management notice is absent and the troubleshooter does not help, consult Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance or your organization’s administrator if the PC is managed.
