For most small SaaS products, Grafana Cloud is the simplest Prometheus-style metrics dashboard without Kubernetes. It removes the work of running Prometheus storage and upgrades while letting you collect application metrics. If you only need to know whether endpoints are reachable, Uptime Kuma is the lowest-cost option, provided you can operate a small Docker host. Choose Better Stack when logs, traces, error tracking, real-user monitoring, and incident response belong in the same managed service. Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus fits AWS-heavy teams that already use PromQL and container monitoring.

The important decision is not the lowest advertised subscription. “Cheap” can mean low software cost, low infrastructure cost, or few hours spent maintaining the system. A free self-hosted monitor can cost more in backups and troubleshooting than a usage-metered hosted service. Start by defining whether you need uptime checks, application metrics, or full observability.

Choose by the question you need answered

A monitoring tool is inexpensive only when it answers the right question. Separate these use cases before selecting a product:

Your question Telemetry required Most suitable starting point
“Is the website, API, or database reachable?” HTTP, TCP, ping, TLS, or database checks Uptime Kuma
“How many requests fail, and how long do they take?” Application counters, gauges, and latency histograms Grafana Cloud with Prometheus-compatible instrumentation
“Which request caused this error, and what did the user experience?” Metrics plus logs, traces, error events, and real-user data Better Stack
“How do I keep Prometheus metrics managed inside AWS?” Prometheus-compatible metrics and PromQL Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus

Prometheus collects and processes metrics; it is not a log-management system. The Prometheus project explicitly describes it as “a system to collect and process metrics, not an event logging system.” If you need searchable application logs, plan a separate log service or select a platform that includes logs.

Do you need Kubernetes to monitor one SaaS?

No. Kubernetes is common in Prometheus documentation and examples, but it is not a prerequisite for collecting metrics. A single application can expose metrics over HTTP, send them to a hosted backend, and display dashboards without operating a Kubernetes cluster.

Prometheus generally favors pulling metrics over HTTP. Your application exposes an endpoint, an agent or Prometheus server scrapes it, and the backend stores the resulting time series. Systems that cannot be scraped can use a push mechanism such as Pushgateway, although a normal web application is usually easier to monitor with a pull endpoint.

For a small deployment, the operational choices are straightforward:

  • Hosted metrics: instrument the application and send metrics to Grafana Cloud. The provider handles storage, upgrades, and availability.
  • Single-host uptime monitoring: run Uptime Kuma in Docker on an existing VPS or Linux machine.
  • Managed full observability: use Better Stack when one interface for logs, traces, errors, uptime, and on-call work is more valuable than assembling separate tools.
  • AWS-managed Prometheus: use Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus when your workloads and operational controls are already centered on AWS.

At-a-glance comparison

Option Best for Operations Telemetry scope Main trade-off
Grafana Cloud Beginners who want managed dashboards and Prometheus-style metrics Hosted; usage metered Metrics, with optional logs, traces, profiles, users, application observability, Kubernetes monitoring, and database observability Costs can rise with usage; each product has its own meter and rates vary by plan
Uptime Kuma Very small services that mainly need endpoint and availability checks Self-hosted, commonly with Docker or Docker Compose HTTP/HTTPS, TCP, TLS certificates, IP addresses, ICMP ping, databases, status pages, notifications, and a Prometheus metrics endpoint Not a complete application-metrics, logs, tracing, or incident-management platform
Better Stack Teams wanting one managed monitoring and incident interface Managed SaaS Uptime, SQL-queryable logs, infrastructure metrics, distributed tracing, error tracking, real-user monitoring, incidents, and subscriber status pages Broader features and paid tiers cost more than a basic endpoint checker
Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus AWS and container teams already comfortable with Prometheus Fully managed AWS service Prometheus-compatible metrics and PromQL Metric-only; logs, traces, and a unified operations view require additional services

Grafana Cloud: the easiest Prometheus-style dashboard

When it is the right fit

Grafana Cloud is the practical default when you want application-level metrics but do not want to run a Prometheus server. You can instrument a SaaS API, collect request rate, error rate, latency, queue depth, worker utilization, and business counters, then build dashboards and alerts in a hosted environment.

The service separates product meters rather than charging one flat infrastructure fee. Documented billing units include active metric series for metrics, gigabytes for logs, and separate concepts for traces, profiles, monthly active users, application observability, Kubernetes monitoring, and database observability. Your bill therefore depends on what you send and retain, not simply on the number of applications.

How to start without Kubernetes

  1. Define a small metric set. Begin with request count, error count, request duration, and one or two SaaS-specific measures such as jobs processed or active subscriptions. Avoid exporting every high-cardinality value, especially user IDs or full URLs.
  2. Expose Prometheus-compatible metrics from the application. Use the client library appropriate for your programming language and provide a scrape endpoint over HTTP. Keep the endpoint protected from public access unless it is intentionally exposed.
  3. Create a Grafana Cloud stack. Select the region and plan that match your data-residency and retention requirements. Treat the published pricing as usage-based and check current rates before committing; rates and included allowances can change.
  4. Install the recommended collector or agent on your host. Configure it to scrape the application endpoint and remote-write the series to your hosted stack. A single Linux VM or Docker host is sufficient; Kubernetes is optional.
  5. Import or build dashboards. Add panels for traffic, failures, latency percentiles, saturation, and the business metric that indicates whether customers are receiving value.
  6. Create alerts with an action attached. An alert should identify the threshold, affected service, and responder. For example, alert on sustained 5xx rate or a latency percentile above your user-facing objective, not on every transient spike.

What to budget for

Estimate active series, samples per second, retention, and any optional logs or traces before choosing a plan. A dashboard with a few low-cardinality metrics can remain small, while labels that vary per request can multiply active series quickly. If you later add logs, traces, profiles, or user-facing application observability, those products are metered separately.

Grafana Cloud is usually cheaper in operator time than maintaining Prometheus storage, upgrades, backups, and alerting yourself. It is not automatically the lowest invoice for every workload: high-volume telemetry and long retention can make a self-managed design attractive for an experienced team.

Uptime Kuma: the lowest-cost answer for availability

What it monitors

Uptime Kuma is an open-source, free, self-hosted monitoring tool for personal websites, VPSs, APIs, home servers, and business infrastructure. It supports HTTP and HTTPS checks, TCP connections, TLS certificate checks, IP addresses, ICMP ping, databases, notifications, and public status pages. The cited 2026 comparison reports checks as frequent as every 20 seconds.

It also exposes a Prometheus metrics endpoint that can be scraped with an API key. That endpoint lets you observe Uptime Kuma itself, but it does not turn the product into a full application-metrics backend. It will tell you that an endpoint returned an error or became slow; it will not automatically explain which code path, database query, or customer action caused the problem.

Deploy it on one Linux host

Docker and Docker Compose are the recommended deployment methods. Use an existing VPS or a small Linux machine rather than creating a dedicated cluster for a handful of checks.

  1. Prepare persistent storage. Create a directory or Docker volume for the application data. Back up this data because it contains monitors, notification settings, and status-page configuration.
  2. Run Uptime Kuma with a persistent data mount. A Compose file should publish the web interface port, mount the persistent data directory at the application data path, and set a restart policy. Pin a tested image tag instead of silently accepting an unexpected major-version change.
  3. Open the setup page. Create the administrator account immediately, then restrict access to the management interface with a firewall or private network. Do not expose administration to the public internet without protection.
  4. Add monitors by failure domain. Create separate checks for the public website, API health endpoint, login flow, critical database connection, and certificate expiry. A single homepage check can remain green while the authenticated API is broken.
  5. Configure notifications and a status page. Send alerts to the channel your team actually watches. Use a public status page only for information you are comfortable disclosing.
  6. Test a failure. Temporarily point one monitor at a closed port or a deliberately failing test endpoint. Confirm that the alert arrives, the status page changes, and recovery produces a notification.

Where it stops being enough

Uptime Kuma is a strong answer to “is my service up?” It is a weak replacement for request-level counters, latency histograms, saturation metrics, logs, distributed traces, error grouping, and incident workflows. If an endpoint is healthy but customers report slow checkout, you need application instrumentation and usually logs or traces in addition to Kuma.

Using a Raspberry Pi 5

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible low-cost Linux host for a small Uptime Kuma deployment because the software supports Docker, Linux, home-server use, and self-hosting. Treat it as an optional host, not as a Prometheus alternative itself. The available evidence does not establish a monitor-count limit, CPU or RAM threshold, performance benchmark, or guaranteed compatibility, so size and validate the device for your own checks and notification volume.

Better Stack: managed observability and incident response

Better Stack is appropriate when uptime checks are only one part of the problem. The June 8, 2026 comparison describes a managed service covering uptime, SQL-queryable logs, infrastructure metrics, distributed tracing, error tracking, real-user monitoring, incident management, and subscriber status pages.

That breadth reduces the time spent wiring together separate products. An engineer can move from an alert to related logs, traces, and errors in one operational workflow. The trade-off is cost and scope: a team that only needs five endpoint checks is paying for capabilities it may not use.

Published pricing and limits

The same June 2026 comparison listed a free tier with 10 monitors and a responder plan at $29 per responder per month. These are dated vendor terms, not permanent prices; verify current limits, retention, monitor intervals, and responder definitions before budgeting. The comparison listed Better Stack checks at 30-second intervals and Uptime Kuma checks as low as 20 seconds, but those intervals do not establish that either platform is faster or more reliable for every workload.

When the managed model pays off

  • You need logs and traces as well as metrics.
  • Several people share on-call duties and need escalation, acknowledgements, and incident history.
  • You want real-user monitoring rather than only synthetic checks.
  • You do not want to maintain a monitoring server, storage, backups, and upgrades.
  • The cost of diagnosing one outage exceeds the difference between a basic checker and a managed observability plan.

Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus: an AWS-centered path

Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus is a serverless, fully managed service compatible with open-source Prometheus. AWS positions it for AWS, on-premises, hybrid, and multicloud container environments. It supports PromQL, integrates with Amazon Managed Grafana, and removes the need to operate Prometheus components yourself.

The decisive limitation is scope: AWS describes the service as metric-only. If you require a unified experience for logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, and alerting, AWS points customers toward CloudWatch and related services. That can be a sensible architecture, but it is broader and more complex than a one-app beginner dashboard.

Use it when these conditions are true

  • Your workloads already run in AWS or across container environments.
  • Your team understands Prometheus labels, scraping, recording rules, and PromQL.
  • Prometheus compatibility is more important than having the fewest moving parts.
  • Your organization accepts assembling additional services for logs, traces, and incident response.

For a single early-stage SaaS with no AWS platform team, Grafana Cloud usually requires less design work. For an AWS-heavy company standardizing on managed infrastructure, Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus can provide a cleaner growth path.

Beginner architectures that avoid Kubernetes

Architecture A: availability only

  1. Run Uptime Kuma in Docker on an existing VPS or small Linux host.
  2. Monitor the public website, API health endpoint, TLS certificate, and any critical database or queue endpoint.
  3. Configure notifications and a status page.
  4. Back up the Kuma data directory and update the container on a controlled schedule.

This design has the smallest software bill, but you own the host, security, storage, updates, and recovery process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Architecture B: application metrics without Kubernetes

  1. Instrument the application with Prometheus-compatible counters, gauges, and histograms.
  2. Run a lightweight collector on the same VM, Docker host, or application environment.
  3. Send the series to Grafana Cloud and build dashboards for traffic, errors, latency, saturation, and one business outcome.
  4. Keep logs in a separate service if they are required; Prometheus is not a log store.
  5. Review active series and retention monthly so usage-based costs do not grow unnoticed.

Architecture C: managed all-in-one operations

  1. Send uptime checks and application telemetry to Better Stack.
  2. Connect error reporting and logs so an alert can be investigated without switching systems.
  3. Define responders, escalation rules, and a public status page only where appropriate.
  4. Reassess the plan as monitor count, log volume, and team size change.

Architecture D: AWS and container growth path

  1. Expose Prometheus-compatible metrics from each service.
  2. Use Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus as the managed metrics backend.
  3. Use Amazon Managed Grafana or another supported visualization layer for dashboards and PromQL queries.
  4. Add separate AWS services for logs, traces, and unified alerting when those requirements appear.

  • Telemetry: active metric series, log gigabytes, trace volume, retention, and sampling.
  • Infrastructure: host, disk, database, network egress, and backup storage for self-hosted tools.
  • Operator time: upgrades, certificate renewal, access control, incident recovery, and capacity planning.
  • People: responder seats, on-call rotation, and the time needed to investigate alerts.
  • Risk: what happens when the monitoring host, notification channel, or data store fails.

Uptime Kuma has no software license charge, but self-hosting still requires a machine, storage, updates, backups, and notification delivery. Grafana Cloud shifts those operational tasks to a hosted service but meters products independently. Better Stack bundles more capabilities and therefore can be unnecessary for a simple endpoint-monitoring requirement. Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus removes Prometheus operations inside AWS but does not remove the need to design the rest of your observability stack.

Common mistakes and recovery steps

Choosing uptime checks when you need application metrics

Symptom: every endpoint is green, yet users report slow or failed workflows. Fix: instrument request rate, error rate, latency, database duration, queue depth, and the business transaction that matters. Keep Kuma for synthetic availability if you like, but add a metrics backend.

Assuming Prometheus stores logs

Symptom: the team searches for stack traces or user events in metric labels. Fix: send structured logs to a log-management system and correlate them with trace or request identifiers. Do not put unbounded text or user IDs into metric labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Creating high-cardinality labels

Symptom: active series and hosted usage rise unexpectedly. Fix: remove labels that contain individual users, sessions, arbitrary URLs, or request IDs. Replace them with bounded dimensions such as method, route template, status class, and service.

Running a self-hosted monitor without recovery planning

Symptom: the monitoring dashboard disappears during the same outage it should report. Fix: place the monitor on infrastructure independent of the application where possible, back up its data, test restore procedures, and use an external notification channel.

Trusting a free-tier number indefinitely

Symptom: a plan no longer covers the current monitor count, retention, or responder roster. Fix: record the date and region of every price assumption, check current vendor limits before renewal, and set a usage alert or budget threshold.

A practical decision rule

Pick Uptime Kuma when your success criterion is endpoint availability and you already have a reliable Linux or Docker host. Pick Grafana Cloud when you need Prometheus-style application metrics and dashboards without operating storage or Kubernetes. Pick Better Stack when logs, traces, errors, real-user data, and incident response are part of the same workflow. Pick Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus when AWS integration and PromQL compatibility outweigh the additional work of adding separate services for non-metric telemetry.

Start with the smallest architecture that can detect the failures you actually fear. Add application metrics before a high-traffic launch, add logs and traces when diagnosis becomes slow, and move to a broader managed platform when the operational cost of assembling and maintaining separate tools exceeds its benefits.
