The cheapest game server is not the one with the lowest advertised number. Your real cost depends on the game’s RAM and CPU demand, player capacity, data-center region, billing term, taxes, and whether an introductory discount expires. Small Minecraft, Terraria, or Factorio worlds can run on budget plans, while Rust, ARK, and Palworld usually require substantially more resources.
What “cheapest” means for a game server
There is no single cheapest hosting provider for every game. A €2 plan that lacks enough memory for your world is not cheaper if you must upgrade immediately. Compare the recurring renewal price, the resources included at that price, and the features your group will actually use.

Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Six factors change the number you pay:
- Game workload: map size, simulation complexity, mods, plugins, and the number of active players determine CPU and RAM needs.
- Allocated resources: a plan’s advertised storage or slot count does not compensate for insufficient RAM or a weak CPU share.
- Player slots: “unlimited slots” may exceed what the game, hardware, or practical performance can support.
- Location: a nearby data center generally gives your group lower latency than a cheaper but distant region.
- Billing term: monthly billing is easier to cancel, while annual or longer commitments may lower the effective monthly price but increase your upfront risk.
- Included services: automated backups, DDoS protection, support, a control panel, and one-click mod installation can be worth more than a small price difference.
Published starting prices by game in 2026
The following figures are starting prices or comparisons reported by the named publishers in 2026. They are not an apples-to-apples market average: currencies, regions, slot counts, hardware allocations, taxes, and billing periods differ.
| Game or package | Reported price | Publisher and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest game-server starting point | €1.70 per month | HostMyGame’s 2026 index; the lowest starting point in that index, not a universal price for every game |
| Minecraft | From €2.80 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| Valheim | From €4.82 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| Palworld | From €7.07 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| Counter-Strike 2 | From €8.92 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| ARK | From €14.56 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| Rust | From €22.05 per month | game-serverhosting.com, 2026 |
| Rust and ARK combined average | Over €39.82 per month | HostMyGame, 2026; an average for demanding titles, not an entry price for every configuration |
| Minecraft, Terraria, or Factorio on 2 GB | About $4.99 per month | GamezServers, 2026; package covers the listed games at the stated memory allocation |
Use the table to set a starting budget, then open the plan details and confirm what is included. A “from” price can represent the smallest map, the fewest slots, a particular region, or a longer billing commitment.

How much RAM and CPU your game really needs
Resource requirements are the main reason a low headline price does not remain low. HostMyGame’s 2026 guidance places a small Minecraft server at roughly 2–4 GB of RAM. That range can cover a lightly populated vanilla world, but large view distances, many simultaneous players, modpacks, and automation-heavy plugins increase both memory and CPU pressure.
Recent survival games need a larger baseline. HostMyGame says Palworld and ARK commonly need 8–16 GB of RAM. Those figures describe a practical planning range, not a guarantee of a particular player count. CPU performance, world-save frequency, mod load, and the host’s virtualization policy still affect stability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- 2 GB: suitable only for a small, lightly modified world when the provider’s CPU allocation is also adequate.
- 4 GB: a more forgiving starting point for a small Minecraft community or a modest collection of plugins.
- 8 GB: a common target for heavier survival games and larger modded worlds.
- 16 GB or more: relevant to demanding ARK configurations and large, heavily modified instances; buy it only when your expected workload justifies the recurring cost.
Ask whether the memory is dedicated to your instance or shared dynamically, and whether CPU limits are expressed as dedicated cores, vCores, or a percentage of a host processor. Two plans with identical RAM can perform very differently if one receives a weaker CPU share or is crowded on the same physical machine.
Cheapest sensible route for each popular use case
Small Minecraft, Terraria, or Factorio server
Start by comparing 2–4 GB plans and look at the renewal price before checking cosmetic extras. GamezServers reports packages for Minecraft, Terraria, and Factorio at about $4.99 per month on 2 GB. That is a useful reference point for a small group, but the correct choice depends on mod count, player activity, backups, and region.

For Minecraft specifically, TechRadar reports ScalaCube at $2 for the first month and says substantial plans start around $5. Treat the $2 figure as an introductory entry price, not the expected long-term bill. Confirm the post-promotion renewal rate, the exact memory allocation, and whether the plan is monthly or requires a longer term.
Valheim
Valheim generally deserves a larger resource budget than a basic Minecraft instance. game-serverhosting.com lists a starting point of €4.82 per month, while Findstack’s vendor-checked comparison from August 2026 reports HostHavoc at $9.99. Those figures cannot be ranked directly until you reconcile currency, country, billing term, slot count, backups, and the hardware included in each plan.
Rust
Rust’s world simulation and server activity can make low-memory plans frustrating. game-serverhosting.com lists a starting point of €22.05, while Findstack reports Shockbyte at $14.99 for an 8 GB configuration. The cheaper-looking figure may represent a different currency, region, billing period, or feature bundle, so compare the 8 GB specification and renewal terms rather than the headline numbers alone.
ARK and Palworld
Budget for materially more memory than you would for a small creative or building server. Findstack reports Shockbyte at $49.99 for ARK with 16 GB or more and $21.99 for Palworld with 8 GB. HostMyGame’s 8–16 GB planning range for these survival games explains why their monthly costs rise quickly. Verify whether the listed memory is enough for your map, mods, save frequency, and target population before committing.

Free and first-month hosting: when it helps
A free tier can be useful for testing a control panel, importing a world, or running a tiny private session. TechRadar reports that Minecraft Hosting Pro offers a free plan, but also notes limitations such as fewer locations and trial-level capabilities. Before relying on a free server, check all of the following:
- Available data-center locations and expected latency for your players.
- CPU limits, memory caps, suspension rules, and whether the server sleeps when idle.
- Maximum players, world size, and restrictions on mods or plugins.
- Backup frequency, restore access, and whether backups count against storage.
- Support channels and response expectations.
- Export options if you decide to move to a paid host.
Free hosting is best treated as a test or a very small private world. If losing the world would be costly, keep an independent copy of the save regardless of the provider’s backup promise.

Promotional pricing is the most common source of an unexpectedly expensive second invoice. Record the normal renewal rate before you order and calculate the full term you expect to keep the server.
- Write down the promotional price and duration. “First month” means the discount may apply only once; it does not describe the recurring rate.
- Record the renewal amount. Check whether it is billed monthly, quarterly, annually, or on another cycle.
- Add taxes and currency conversion. A euro or dollar figure may exclude local sales tax, VAT, payment fees, or exchange-rate changes.
- List paid add-ons. Extra memory, additional backups, reserved IP addresses, premium support, and a second location can change the monthly total.
- Check cancellation and refund terms. A discounted annual purchase can cost more overall if you cancel early and receive no prorated refund.
- Price the upgrade path. If your world outgrows the starter plan, find the next RAM or CPU tier and whether upgrading preserves the files and address.
For a meaningful comparison, put the normal renewal total beside the included RAM, CPU allocation, slots, backup policy, and location. The lowest recurring number is only a bargain when it still meets those requirements.

Features worth paying for
Backups and recovery
Confirm how often backups run, how many restore points are retained, and whether you can download them. A backup stored on the same infrastructure is convenient but does not replace an offline or independent copy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →DDoS protection and network quality
Public game servers can attract attacks or abusive traffic. Ask whether protection is included, whether mitigation has bandwidth or duration limits, and whether an attack can trigger suspension. A nearby, well-connected data center often improves playability more than a small discount.
Control panel and mod management
A clear panel should let you start and stop the server, change versions, inspect logs, schedule restarts, upload worlds, and install mods or plugins. One-click installers save time, but verify that they support the exact game version you run.
Support and migration
Check support hours, response channels, and the process for moving an existing save. A host that supplies an exportable backup and preserves your files during an upgrade reduces lock-in.
Best Value
Step-by-step method for choosing the cheapest suitable plan
- Define the group: estimate peak concurrent players, not the number of people in your community chat.
- Choose the game configuration: vanilla, lightly modded, or heavily modded; map and world settings can change resource use.
- Set a minimum resource target: use the game-specific RAM guidance, then leave headroom for saves, plugins, and growth.
- Shortlist nearby regions: eliminate plans that put most players far from the data center.
- Compare recurring prices: separate introductory discounts from normal renewals and include taxes and add-ons.
- Verify operational features: backups, restore tools, DDoS protection, panel access, mod support, and migration rights.
- Read cancellation rules: note notice periods, refund windows, and what happens to files after cancellation.
- Start small but monitor: watch memory use, CPU saturation, tick rate, crashes, and save times during peak play. Upgrade only when measurements show the need.
Common traps and how to avoid them
Comparing unlike currencies and plans
Euro and dollar prices from different publishers may describe different regions, taxes, slot limits, or billing terms. Convert currencies only after matching the included resources and contract length.
Buying by slot count alone
Slots do not guarantee that the server can simulate that many players smoothly. Treat RAM and CPU allocation as the performance limit, then use the slot number as a configuration ceiling.
Assuming unlimited means unlimited performance
Providers may advertise unlimited slots or storage subject to fair-use rules, game limits, or hardware capacity. Ask what technical cap applies to your instance.
Ignoring renewal dates
Set a calendar reminder before the promotional period ends. If the renewal is too high, export the world while the account is active and move it before the next charge.
Skipping independent backups
Provider backups can be unavailable during an outage, account dispute, or accidental deletion. Download the world and configuration files on a schedule you control.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Bottom-line buying guidance
For a small, lightly modified Minecraft, Terraria, or Factorio server, begin with a 2–4 GB plan and judge it by its recurring price, location, and backup policy. Valheim needs a more generous budget, while Rust, ARK, and Palworld can make resource upgrades the dominant cost. Use published starting prices as screening figures only, then compare equivalent RAM, CPU, slots, billing terms, and protections. A slightly higher recurring bill is usually cheaper than repeated downtime, lost worlds, or an emergency migration.
