Minecraft has four fish mob categories: cod, salmon, pufferfish and tropical fish. A fishing rod can pull fish, junk or treasure from water, but a water bucket is the tool you need to move a living specimen into an aquarium. Cod and salmon are practical food catches, tropical fish are mainly for collection and trading, and pufferfish is a hazardous utility item used for water-breathing potions, trading and taming cats or ocelots.

Use the table as a planning shortcut: choose cod or salmon when you need ordinary food, tropical fish when you want variety or a display collection, and pufferfish when you need a specific brewing or utility ingredient.
Cod: dependable food and a simple aquarium fish
Cod is one of the standard fish mobs and one of the raw fish items available from a fishing rod. Its most straightforward role is food. It is also suitable for an aquarium: use a water bucket directly on a swimming cod, then carry the filled bucket to the destination.

How to use cod in a build
Place or identify a water source where the cod is swimming, use an empty water bucket on the fish, and take the resulting fish bucket to the tank. Empty the bucket into the aquarium’s water. This method moves a living cod instead of producing an item that would need to be dropped into water.
When cod is the sensible choice
- Choose it for a routine food supply when a rod is already part of your early-game kit.
- Use it as a common-looking fish for a large public aquarium where collecting many rare patterns is unnecessary.
- Catch it with a rod when you want a fish item rather than a live mob for transport.
Salmon: river-associated fish and rod catch
Salmon is another standard fish mob and a fishing-rod catch. The cited Minecraft reference identifies salmon as the fish found in rivers. Because spawning tables can differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and game updates, treat “river” as the documented habitat rather than assuming every version uses identical rules.

Raw salmon is part of the rod’s fish loot. If your goal is an edible catch, salmon fills the same broad role as cod: it is a normal fish item rather than a potion ingredient or a hazardous novelty.
Salmon for aquariums
As with cod, a water bucket captures salmon alive. Fill the bucket by using it on the swimming fish, then empty it into a prepared water enclosure. This is preferable to trying to keep a dropped raw-salmon item in a tank, because the bucket preserves the mob for release.
Tropical fish: the collection fish with thousands of appearances
Tropical fish are a single fish category with a very large set of color and pattern combinations. They are the best choice when the objective is a visually varied aquarium rather than a food stockpile.

Where tropical fish spawn
The official Minecraft tropical-fish article says tropical fish appear in large groups in warm and lukewarm oceans and in lush caves. It also identifies mangrove swamps as a Java Edition location. Do not apply that mangrove detail automatically to Bedrock Edition; spawning rules are edition-specific and can change with updates.
Why the published totals do not match
Two official Minecraft articles give different dated counts. The tropical-fish article published June 27, 2025 says there are “3,072 different types of tropical fish.” An older pufferfish article published October 14, 2020 says “3,584 different kinds of tropical fish.” These are article-era figures, not a single timeless universal total. The safest way to describe tropical-fish variety is to say that the game supports thousands of combinations and to attach either number to its publication date rather than merging them.
Capture a specific tropical fish
Swim close to the fish you want, use a water bucket directly on it, and carry the filled bucket to your display. The bucket preserves the live fish for transport, so a chosen color and pattern can be relocated without trying to reproduce the same variant later.
Tropical-fish uses beyond decoration
- Fisherman trading: tropical fish can be traded with fisherman villagers.
- Wolf healing: the official article says a tropical fish heals a wolf for two health points.
- Food limitations: tropical fish cannot be cooked. The official article states that eating one raw restores one hunger and 0.2 saturation.
That combination makes tropical fish a poor long-term food plan but a strong collection, trading and animal-care item.
Pufferfish: useful ingredient, dangerous meal
Pufferfish is primarily a utility item. The official Minecraft article describes three acquisition routes: fishing is the easy route, finding live pufferfish in warm or lukewarm oceans is harder, and hunting guardians is the hardest route described there.

What pufferfish is used for
- Water-breathing potions: use pufferfish as the brewing ingredient for this underwater utility.
- Fisherman trading: pufferfish can be exchanged with fisherman villagers.
- Cat and ocelot taming: use it when wrangling cats and ocelots.
Why you should not eat it
Eating pufferfish applies hunger, nausea and poison simultaneously. That combination makes it a deliberately bad emergency food, even when the item is readily available. Store pufferfish with brewing supplies or trading items instead of placing it in a general food slot.
Obtaining a live pufferfish
A rod is the easiest acquisition route when you only need the item. If you want a living specimen for an aquarium, find one in a warm or lukewarm ocean and use a water bucket on it. Guardian hunting is described as the hardest of the three routes in the official article and is not an efficient first choice for a decorative tank.
How fishing with a rod works
A fishing rod can produce more than fish. Its catch pool includes raw cod, raw salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish, junk and treasure.
- Stand where the bobber can land in suitable water and cast the fishing rod.
- Watch the bobber for a bite. When a fish pulls it under, reel in promptly.
- Collect the resulting item and cast again if you are fishing for a particular category.
- Sort the haul: keep fish for food or utility, move junk out of storage, and preserve treasure separately.
Rod catches and the live-fish distinction
Fishing produces an item catch, not a fish mob that automatically swims in your tank. If your goal is an aquarium, stop fishing once you have located a live fish and switch to a water bucket. The bucket method is the reliable way to transport cod, salmon, tropical fish or pufferfish alive.
Practical fishing decisions
- Need food? Keep raw cod and raw salmon from the fish portion of the loot pool.
- Need a potion ingredient? Continue fishing for pufferfish rather than eating the catch.
- Need a display specimen? Use the rod to locate an area, then capture the swimming fish with a bucket.
- Need rare loot? Remember that junk and treasure share the pool with fish, so a fish-free cast is not necessarily a failed attempt.
How to capture and transport a live fish
The water bucket is the key aquarium and transport tool. The procedure is short, but using the wrong item or emptying the bucket in the wrong place can ruin a collection attempt.

- Craft or obtain an empty water bucket.
- Find the fish mob you want to move. For tropical fish, identify the color and pattern before capturing it.
- Use the empty bucket directly on the fish. A successful interaction fills the bucket with that fish.
- Carry the filled fish bucket to the destination. Keep it in your inventory until the tank is ready.
- Use the filled bucket on a water source in the aquarium. The fish is released into the enclosure and the bucket becomes empty.
Prepare the aquarium first
- Build walls high enough to keep the fish from escaping through gaps.
- Fill the display with water before releasing the fish.
- Provide enough swimming space to see the specimen clearly, especially for a tropical-fish collection.
- Release fish one at a time if you are tracking particular tropical variants.
The bucket is also a recovery tool: if a fish is in the wrong tank, capture it again and release it into the correct water source rather than trying to push it through a narrow opening.

“I caught fish, but none are swimming in my aquarium.”
A rod gives an item catch. Locate a live fish and use a water bucket on the mob, then empty the filled bucket into the tank.

Capture the fish itself rather than relying on a generic item. A bucket preserves the live tropical fish for transport, so inspect the variant before you interact.
“I cannot find tropical fish in my local ocean.”
Check that the water is a warm or lukewarm ocean and remember that lush caves are another documented habitat. Mangrove-swamp spawning is specifically identified for Java Edition, so do not assume the same result in Bedrock Edition.
“I ate a pufferfish and feel several negative effects.”
That is the item’s expected danger: eating it applies hunger, nausea and poison together. Keep pufferfish for brewing, trading or cat and ocelot taming instead.
“The fish-spawn advice I found conflicts with my edition.”
Use edition-qualified guidance. The cited salmon habitat is rivers, tropical fish have a Java-specific mangrove-swamp note, and spawning tables can change between Java and Bedrock versions. When a location matters, verify it against the rules for the edition you are playing.

Fish names and the four broad categories are stable enough for a general guide, but exact spawning behavior is not universal across Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and every game update. In particular, treat habitat statements as qualified facts rather than guarantees for every release.
“Fish” also describes two different things in normal play: a mob that swims and an item in your inventory. Rod fishing yields items, while a water bucket captures a mob. This distinction explains why a fishing session can provide food or potion ingredients without automatically supplying an aquarium inhabitant.
For tropical fish, avoid quoting a single permanent total. The June 27, 2025 official article uses 3,072 types, while the October 14, 2020 official pufferfish article uses 3,584 kinds. Both figures belong to their dated articles; neither should be presented as an unqualified, all-version count.
