For PC-console play, the server must also use EOS networking and have Console compatibility enabled. Players then select the EOS server list and confirm that the server is console-compatible. What VRage Remote actually connects to
VRage Remote is an administration client supplied with the Space Engineers Dedicated Server tools. Its target is the server’s Remote API endpoint: an HTTP URL, a dedicated Remote API port, and an authentication secret. The public game address shown to players is not enough by itself. A server can be reachable in the game browser while its Remote API is disabled, blocked by Windows, bound to the wrong interface, or configured on a different port.
Keen describes the Remote API as a facility for server providers and experienced users. The same administration path can be used to assign administrator rights after the server is running. Keen’s administrator instructions identify DS Server Manager, VRage Remote Client, and the Remote API as the available methods.

Prerequisites for a crossplay connection
Prepare these items before opening the client:
- A Windows machine running the Space Engineers Dedicated Server software, with permission to edit its configuration and Windows Firewall rules.
- The server’s reachable HTTP address. This may be a public IP, a DNS name, or an address reachable from the machine or network where VRage Remote is running. It is not automatically the same value as the game join address.
- A Remote API port and secret key configured in Server Manager before the dedicated server starts.
- Network access to that Remote API port, including any host firewall or provider-level firewall rule.
- EOS networking enabled and Console compatibility enabled if Xbox or other supported console players must see and join the server.
- The exact in-game name of the account that will be promoted. The account must appear in the server’s online-player list after joining.
If the server is intended only for Steam players, EOS and console compatibility are not required for that PC-only arrangement. If any console player must join, configure the server for EOS and verify the console-compatible designation in the join screen.
Install the dedicated-server tools
- Open Steam Library and switch the library filter to Tools.
- Install Space Engineers Dedicated Server.
- Locate the installation directory. Keen’s documented default location places the VRage Remote executable in
...SpaceEngineersDedicatedServerDedicatedServer64. - Use the server manager supplied with the dedicated-server installation to create or open the server instance you intend to administer.
Do not confuse the Remote client with the dedicated game server process. The server must be running and its Remote API must be enabled before the client can establish an administrative session.

Configure the Remote API before starting the server
Keen states that the Remote API port and secret key must be set in Server Manager before the dedicated server starts. Choose a port that is not already occupied, record it exactly, and create a strong secret that you can enter in the client without transcription errors.
Set the port and secret in Server Manager
- Open the dedicated-server configuration in Server Manager.
- Enable the Remote API option.
- Enter the Remote API port you intend to expose.
- Enter the Remote API secret key.
- Save the server configuration.
- Start or restart the dedicated server so it loads the new values.
Changing a value while the server process is already running does not guarantee that the active process has reloaded it. A full restart is the safest way to apply a changed port, key, or enabled/disabled state.
Confirm the equivalent configuration-file values
When diagnosing a failed start, inspect SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. Keen’s support guidance identifies these settings:

<RemoteAPIPort>8080</RemoteAPIPort>Replace 8080 with the port you actually selected. The value in the configuration file, the value in Server Manager, and the value entered in VRage Remote must agree. If the server manager writes a different value when it saves, use the value in the active server configuration and restart again.
Reserve the HTTP URL on Windows when the API will not start
A common failure is a server-console message that the Remote API cannot start, or a VRage Remote client that immediately reports no connection. Keen’s support response recommends reserving the HTTP URL with Windows HTTP.sys. Open an elevated Windows Command Prompt and run:
netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:8080/vrageremote/ user=EveryoneSubstitute your chosen port for 8080. The trailing /vrageremote/ path is part of the documented reservation command. Run the command with administrator privileges; a normal, non-elevated prompt may fail to create the reservation.
This support procedure is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every hosting environment allows URL reservations. On a managed host, you may not have permission to alter HTTP.sys or the provider’s firewall. In that situation, the host must expose and permit the Remote API, or you must use the host’s supported configuration interface.
Open the Remote API port in Windows Firewall
Allow inbound traffic for the selected Remote API port in Windows Firewall. The game’s UDP or Steam/EOS join ports and the Remote API’s HTTP port are separate concerns. Opening the game port while leaving the HTTP port blocked can produce a server that is visible and playable but impossible to administer through VRage Remote.

Also check any router, cloud-security group, data-center firewall, or hosting control-panel rule between the client and the server. The port must be reachable from the machine where VRage Remote runs. If you are testing locally, use an address that actually resolves to the server from that location; if you are connecting over the internet, use the externally reachable address rather than an internal-only address.
Connect with VRage Remote Client
- Start the dedicated server and wait until it has finished loading.
- Open
VRageRemoteClient.exefrom theDedicatedServer64directory. - Enter the server’s reachable HTTP URL.
- Enter the Remote API port configured in Server Manager.
- Enter the same secret key configured for the server.
- Submit the connection and wait for the server-management interface to load.
Use the values as a matching set. The URL must identify the machine running the dedicated server, the port must be the Remote API port rather than a guessed game port, and the key must match character-for-character.

The URL and port together identify the Remote API endpoint. If you configured an HTTP URL with a non-default port, include that port in the client’s port field as requested by the client interface; do not assume the game’s advertised endpoint will work.
Promote yourself or another player to administrator
After VRage Remote connects, use the documented administration path:

- Open Admin Tools.
- Select Chat and Players.
- Open the Online list.
- Select the account’s displayed game name.
- Choose Promote.
The promoted account can be on a different platform from the machine hosting the dedicated server. Keen explains that dedicated-server administration is asynchronous, so a player does not need to be using the same platform as the host for this promotion workflow. The player must still be online and identifiable in the list when you select the name.

If the name is missing, have the player join the intended server first, verify that the server is the correct instance, and refresh the online list. Similar display names can exist, so confirm the account before choosing Promote.

Remote administration and crossplay visibility are related but separate settings. VRage Remote can connect to a dedicated server even when that server is PC-only; console players will not see or join it unless the server is configured for the supported crossplay model.
Required server-side settings
Keen’s crossplay documentation says a crossplay dedicated server must enable:
- EOS networking
- Console compatibility
EOS is the networking mode that makes the server appear to both PC and Xbox players in Keen’s documented model. Console compatibility marks the server as suitable for console clients. Enable both in the dedicated-server configuration, save, and restart the server before testing discovery.
What players should select
- Open the game’s server browser.
- Choose the EOS server list or the Steam/EOS filter that includes EOS servers.
- Find the intended server and verify that it is marked console-compatible.
- Join that server, then have the account appear in VRage Remote’s Online list before promoting it.
A Steam-only server remains PC-only under Keen’s documented model. If a console player cannot find the server, first verify the list filter and console-compatible designation before troubleshooting VRage Remote; a Remote API connection does not make a Steam-only server visible to consoles.
Troubleshoot “no connection” and Remote API startup errors
The client says no connection is available
- Confirm that the dedicated server process is running and that you launched the Remote client from the same dedicated-server installation you configured.
- Recheck the HTTP address. Use the server’s reachable address, not an address that is valid only inside a private network.
- Recheck the Remote API port against Server Manager and
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Re-enter the secret key exactly. A changed key requires the new value in VRage Remote.
- Allow the port through Windows Firewall and any upstream firewall or hosting panel.
- Restart the dedicated server after every configuration change.
The server console says the Remote API cannot start
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Reserve the URL using the documented command, replacing the port if necessary:
netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:8080/vrageremote/ user=Everyone - Verify that the selected port is not already in use by another service.
- Confirm
<RemoteAPIEnabled>true</RemoteAPIEnabled>and the matching<RemoteAPIPort>value inSpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Permit the port through Windows Firewall.
- Restart the dedicated server and watch the startup log again.
Keen’s support page presents these actions as a diagnostic sequence. Hosting environments can impose additional restrictions, so a successful URL reservation on a self-managed Windows server does not prove that the same command is permitted on a managed service.

This pattern usually indicates reachability rather than credentials. Test the server’s externally reachable address, then inspect Windows Firewall, router forwarding, cloud firewall rules, and provider permissions. A local test can succeed through a loopback or private address while an internet client is unable to reach the same port.
The client connects but the player cannot be promoted
Confirm that you are connected to the correct server instance and that the target player is currently online. The promotion menu is under Admin Tools > Chat and Players > Online; it is not the same as changing the Remote API secret or editing the game-server configuration. Ask the player to join through the EOS list if the server is crossplay-enabled, then refresh the online list and select the displayed game name.
Mods and scripts on mixed PC/Xbox servers
For Xbox or mixed PC/Xbox servers, Keen’s administrator guidance directs operators toward mods hosted through Mod.io. Plan content around what console clients can load rather than assuming that every Steam Workshop item will be available to them.
Keen’s crossplay notes also state that client-side scripts do not execute on Xbox. Dedicated-server scripts can work when they are server-side only. Before adding a mod, determine whether its behavior depends on a script running on each player’s client. A server-side-only design is the safer choice for a mixed platform population; a client-side script that works for PC players may not provide the same behavior to Xbox players.
A repeatable connection checklist
- Dedicated Server installed from Steam Library > Tools.
VRageRemoteClient.exelocated under...SpaceEngineersDedicatedServerDedicatedServer64.- Remote API enabled in Server Manager.
- Remote API port recorded and identical in Server Manager, the configuration file, and VRage Remote.
- Secret key recorded and entered exactly.
- HTTP URL reserved when Windows reports that the API cannot start.
- Remote API port allowed through Windows Firewall and any upstream firewall.
- Dedicated server restarted after configuration changes.
- EOS networking and Console compatibility enabled for PC-console crossplay.
- Players using the EOS server list and checking the console-compatible label.
- Target player online before opening Admin Tools > Chat and Players > Online.
Once these checks pass, the workflow is straightforward: connect VRage Remote to the dedicated server’s Remote API, select the online account, and choose Promote. The game’s public join address remains a separate player-connection endpoint, while VRage Remote uses the HTTP API endpoint you configured.
