What you are actually renting
An ARK server rental is a hosted computer that runs your multiplayer world continuously. The provider supplies the game server software, a control panel and a data-center connection; you choose a player limit, region and options, then invite friends to that server. You are paying for access to a managed service rather than buying a physical server.

This article is about ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE). ASE and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) are separate games with different server files. A save, mod setup or player community from one edition does not automatically work on the other. Confirm the edition in the order form and in the game launcher before you compare prices.

These are not independent speed, latency or uptime tests. They are prices and inclusions published by the providers. A lower number can still be poor value if it supports the wrong edition, excludes your platform, has too few slots or makes backups difficult.

Why the £9.99 plan is not automatically the right choice
For a group of friends, “good” means the server can run the way that group actually plays. Price should come after four compatibility checks.
1. Match the game edition
Choose ASE only if everyone owns and launches Survival Evolved. ASA uses different server files and is not interchangeable with ASE. A host can offer both games while still requiring separate products, saves and mod libraries.

2. Match every player’s platform
Write down the exact combination before ordering: Steam PC, Epic PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Windows 10/Xbox Game Pass, Mobile or Nintendo Switch. A 10-slot plan on the wrong platform is unusable, even if it is the cheapest listing.
3. Confirm crossplay, not just platform logos
Nitrado states that its ASE service supports Steam/Epic crossplay and Windows 10/Xbox Game Pass crossplay. It also states that PlayStation and Nintendo Switch do not support crossplay on its service. GTX describes Steam/Epic crossplay on unmodded servers. Crossplay rules can depend on the game build and whether mods are enabled, so verify the precise combination in the host’s current documentation.
4. Check the slot limit against peak use
Ten slots means up to ten concurrent players, not ten accounts over the life of the server. Count the largest expected evening, not the average. If eight friends normally play and two guests join occasionally, a 10-slot plan leaves no room for growth. Buying a larger plan later may be possible, but confirm that changing plans preserves the world and configuration.
What the listed inclusions mean
RAM and storage
GTX’s ASE listing says the plans include up to 10GB of RAM and up to 100GB of NVMe storage. “Up to” describes the plan’s stated ceiling; it does not mean every small installation constantly uses that amount or that the resources are dedicated exclusively to your process. Storage holds the world save, configuration files, logs and any installed content. Large maps and mod collections can increase the amount required.
Backups
Daily automatic backups are listed by GTX. Ask how many restore points are retained, whether backups are stored separately from the game machine, and whether restoring one is a self-service action or a support request. A daily schedule limits the maximum rollback window; it cannot recover changes made after the latest backup.

Support
GTX lists 24/7 support. That is an availability statement, not a guaranteed resolution time or an uptime guarantee. Before purchase, look for the support channel, expected response times and the procedure for a stuck update, failed restart or corrupted save.
DDoS protection and network location
GTX lists DDoS protection among its plan features. Protection can reduce the effect of some attacks but does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Select a data-center region close to most players. Physical distance, routing and the players’ own connections affect latency; a cheaper country that is far from your group may feel worse during combat or building.
Mods: the most common budget-plan surprise
Mods are not a universal add-on. Every player must be able to obtain the same versions, and the server must load them in a compatible order.
- GTX says Steam Workshop mods are for Steam players and that Epic players cannot load them.
- Nitrado warns that community mods can take time to become compatible after game updates.
- Crossplay configurations may impose stricter limits than a Steam-only server.
For a mixed Steam/Epic group, plan on an unmodded server unless the host explicitly documents a supported mod path. For a Steam-only group, list the exact Workshop IDs, install them one at a time, and keep a copy of the working load order. Delay an automatic game update if the control panel allows it and your group needs time for mod authors to release fixes.
Monthly billing versus longer commitments
The £9.99 GTX figure is monthly billing. Nitrado’s £11.59 figure is a 30-day configuration, and GPORTAL’s €13.70 figure is also shown for 30 days. Do not compare a discounted multi-month commitment with a cancel-anytime monthly plan without stating the commitment.

Before checkout, record:
- currency and whether tax is included;
- the renewal interval and renewal price;
- any setup fee or minimum term;
- cancellation timing and refund rules;
- whether a plan change keeps your save, IP address and configuration.
A monthly plan costs a little more in some markets but lets a short-lived server be shut down without paying for unused months. A longer term can reduce the effective monthly rate, yet it increases the risk of being locked into a platform or location that does not suit your group.
How to choose the cheapest plan that remains usable
- Identify the edition. Confirm that every player is on ASE, not ASA.
- List platforms and crossplay. Note each player’s platform and remove hosts that do not support that exact combination.
- Estimate peak concurrent players. Add likely guests and leave a small margin instead of buying exactly the current headcount.
- Decide on mods. If any player is on Epic, treat GTX’s Steam Workshop limitation as decisive. If you need mods, verify update compatibility and installation controls first.
- Choose the nearest practical region. Compare locations offered for your platform, not just the headline currency.
- Compare the complete monthly cost. Include tax, renewal price and any paid backup or transfer option.
- Read continuity terms. Confirm backup retention and whether upgrading, downgrading or changing locations preserves the world.
- Save the order details. Keep the plan name, slot count, region, renewal date and support contact in your group’s notes.
Setup checklist after purchase
Use the first session to make recovery and access predictable, rather than immediately installing a large mod pack.
- Open the host’s game-server control panel and confirm it says ARK: Survival Evolved and the intended map.
- Set a strong server password and a separate admin password. Do not post admin credentials in a public chat.
- Configure the server name so friends can find it, then restart once to verify that settings persist.
- Join from one player account on each supported platform before inviting the whole group.
- Make a harmless setting change, restart, and verify that the change and the world save remain.
- Locate the backup page, note the latest backup timestamp and learn the restore procedure.
- Add mods individually, if your platform combination permits them. Test joining, spawning and saving after each change.
- Keep a local record of map, difficulty, rates, passwords, mod IDs and configuration values.
Common failure modes and fixes
Friends cannot see the server
Check that everyone selected ASE, the same map and the supported platform network. Confirm that the server is online in the panel, then search by the exact server name. Crossplay restrictions can make a server invisible to a platform that is not included in the configuration.
A player is rejected after an update
Compare the client and server versions. If a mod is installed, check whether it has been updated for the new game build. Remove or roll back the newest mod only after taking a backup; changing several variables at once makes the cause harder to identify.
The world rolls back
Check the backup timestamp and the server’s save interval. A restore point can only return the world to the time it was created. If rollbacks continue, stop repeatedly restoring and open a support ticket with the server name, timestamps and recent configuration changes.
Performance worsens as the base grows
Large builds, breeding areas, dropped items and mod content can increase workload. Remove abandoned items, review heavy mods and compare the plan’s resource allocation with the host’s upgrade options. Do not infer a hardware fault from one lag spike; record when it occurs and whether all players experience it.
The renewal price is higher than expected
Check the invoice currency, tax and renewal interval against the order confirmation. Promotional or first-period pricing may not continue. If the total is not clear, pause renewal and contact billing support before the next charge.

When self-hosting may be cheaper
Running an ASE server on your own computer can avoid a recurring rental fee, but the comparison is incomplete without electricity, hardware, upload bandwidth, router configuration, maintenance and the need to keep the machine running whenever friends want to play. It also shifts backups, security and troubleshooting to you. For a small group that plays at predictable times and already owns suitable hardware, self-hosting can be reasonable; for an always-on world, a managed monthly server usually buys convenience and continuity rather than raw performance guarantees.
