The trade-off is modest image quality and video capped at 1080p/30 fps. If you want 4K video and more underwater shooting controls, consider the OM SYSTEM Tough TG-7 instead—but check local prices before deciding.
Which cheap underwater camera should you choose?
The best fit depends on what you plan to shoot. For casual surface activities and a lower-cost dedicated compact, the WPZ2 offers optical zoom and simple underwater settings. It is not the right choice if you expect especially polished stills, strong low-light results, or high-resolution video.

For an upgrade with 4K recording and more underwater options, the TG-7 is a useful comparison. The RICOH WG-80 is another rugged compact to consider if close-up subjects are a priority. Prices and availability vary by market and date, so compare current local listings rather than relying on old launch prices.

What to expect from the budget pick
Water rating and zoom
Kodak lists the WPZ2’s waterproof limit as 15 m (49 ft), along with 4× optical zoom and an underwater mode. Those specifications make it a practical candidate for casual water activities, but the depth figure is a manufacturer-stated limit, not a guarantee against leakage in every condition. Follow the camera manual’s directions for use and inspect closures and seals as instructed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Still photos and video
The WPZ2’s video ceiling is 1080p at 30 fps. TechRadar’s review also describes its still-image performance as limited by weak saturation, contrast, and dynamic range. That means it may suit straightforward vacation snapshots better than demanding underwater work or scenes with difficult light.
Storage
Kodak lists compatibility with microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards up to 1.5 TB and recommends Class 10 or higher. A compatible card may be a useful extra; check the package contents and current bundle details before buying.

When is an upgrade worth it?
Choose the TG-7 for video and underwater controls
The TG-7 is the stronger match if 4K/30p recording and more specialized underwater settings matter more than the lowest purchase price. TechRadar lists depth-based white balance among its underwater modes. Its 12 MP sensor is not, by itself, a reason to expect better image quality than a recent phone; consider the overall controls and video features instead.
Consider the WG-80 for close-ups
Ricoh lists six macro LEDs on the WG-80, a feature aimed at close-up subjects, alongside its 14 m waterproof rating for up to two hours. Ricoh announced a $399.99 launch MSRP in 2022; that historical figure should not be treated as today’s price.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

How to compare cameras for your water activities
Do not decide by megapixel count or depth rating alone. Compare the features that affect your actual use:
- Depth and duration: Check the stated water limit and any duration qualification. These are product limits, not promises of leak-proof operation.
- Still-photo performance: Look for credible image-quality assessments, especially if you will shoot in dim water or want to edit photos later.
- Video: Compare resolution and frame rate against what you plan to share or keep; the WPZ2 records up to 1080p/30 fps, while the TG-7 is listed at 4K/30p.
- Underwater controls and close-up aids: Modes such as depth-based white balance or macro lighting can be more useful than a larger megapixel number for particular subjects.
- Handling: Consider whether you need optical zoom and still-photo controls or primarily want hands-free video.
- Current price and availability: Check local listings and the included accessories. Prices and bundles can change.
A compact camera with optical zoom and dedicated still-photo controls may suit photo-first use. An action camera may be a better fit for video-first recording, but current action-camera models are not compared here.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Match the camera to the water you plan to enter
The WPZ2’s 15 m rating and the TG-7’s 15 m listing do not make either camera a scuba housing or establish suitability for every underwater condition. If your plans involve deeper diving, demanding low-light photography, RAW editing, or high-quality video, a budget compact may not meet your needs; investigate a different camera class or a dedicated housing system.
Before using any camera in water, consult its current manufacturer manual for operating, closure, and maintenance instructions. The ratings above do not establish a universal saltwater-rinsing procedure or seal-replacement schedule, so use the guidance for the specific model.
