What “open” means
OpenAI’s October 17, 2024 release note said: “Today, ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Edu users can start testing an early version of the Windows app.” The note also said free access and additional features were coming soon at that time. It does not establish the plan access rules in 2026. Current availability can vary by account, region and organization policy; the Microsoft Store listing and current OpenAI plan documentation are the authoritative checks.

Windows requirements
- Operating system: Windows 10 or later.
- Architecture: x64 or Arm64.
- Minimum Windows version: 17763.0.
- Distribution: Microsoft Store.
If your PC is on an older Windows build, update Windows before troubleshooting the app. The requirement is a platform specification, not a guarantee that every feature available on the web or macOS is present in the Windows release.

Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store in Windows.
- Search for the official ChatGPT app published by OpenAI.
- Select Get or Install, then sign in with your ChatGPT account when prompted.
Managed business deployment
Enterprise and Edu administrators can control Store access through organizational IT policies. OpenAI lists mobile-device-management or mobile-application-management tools such as Microsoft Intune as deployment options. A supported winget route uses the Microsoft Store source and package ID 9NT1R1C2HH7J:

Opening the companion window
With the ChatGPT Windows app running, press Alt + Space to open its companion window. From there you can ask a question, upload files, generate an image or start a new conversation without switching to a full browser tab. You can change the shortcut in the app’s Settings if another program already uses Alt + Space.

These entries document additions over time. They should not be read as proof that Windows currently has complete feature parity with the web or macOS apps; OpenAI’s guide specifically warned during the early release that some platform features might differ.

Fixes for common problems
Alt + Space does nothing
- Confirm the ChatGPT app is open; the companion shortcut is not a system-wide launcher for a closed app.
- Check Settings in ChatGPT and assign a different shortcut if another application has registered Alt + Space.
The app will not install
- Confirm Windows is version 17763.0 or newer and that the device is x64 or Arm64.
- Check whether your organization blocks Microsoft Store installations.
- On a managed PC, ask IT about Intune or another MDM/MAM deployment.
Reset the installation
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps → Installed Apps.
- Find ChatGPT, open its menu and choose Advanced Options.
- Select Reset.
Data handling for business offerings
OpenAI’s Windows-app guide says content from its business offerings is not used to improve model performance by default. The same wording notes that material you explicitly share, such as feedback, may be used. This statement applies to the business offering named in that policy; it should not be generalized to every consumer account.

Should you install it?
Install it if you want a dedicated Windows workflow, a quick companion window and local integrations such as webcam or Snipping Tool capture. Stay with the browser if you do not want a Store installation, your organization blocks Store apps, or a feature you need is available only on another platform. In all cases, verify your account’s current eligibility and the present Store listing before relying on the app for work.
