The announcement covered individual audiobook purchases and extra “Top Up” listening hours. However, Spotify’s current U.S. support pages say individual titles are purchased in the Web Player and that plan and top-up payments are web-only. Because those statements describe different flows, the availability of direct in-app checkout should be verified in your account immediately before you buy.
What Spotify announced in May 2025
Spotify said users in the United States could see audiobook pricing, buy individual titles and purchase additional “Top Up” hours beyond the 15 hours included with Premium each month. The company linked the change to the U.S. court ruling in Epic Games v. Apple, which Spotify said removed restrictions on showing purchase information and links in its iPhone app.

Why the current checkout instructions are confusing
Spotify’s product announcement describes purchase choices in the iPhone experience, while current Spotify support material gives a web-based route:

- Spotify’s current U.S. audiobook FAQ says individual audiobooks can be purchased in the Spotify Web Player and then played in the app.
These published instructions conflict with the 2025 announcement. Do not assume that seeing an audiobook in the iPhone app means Apple checkout is available; use the purchase prompt shown for your account, and check the Web Player if the app does not display a price or buy link.
How audiobook access works
Individual audiobook purchases
An individual title is a permanent purchase entitlement rather than a monthly listening allowance. Spotify’s documented current route is to buy the title in the Web Player, then listen to it in the Spotify app.

Premium listening hours
Eligible Premium access can include a monthly audiobook listening allowance. The allowance is not a permanent ownership right for every title, and availability depends on plan and country.
Audiobooks Access plan
Spotify identifies Audiobooks Access as a U.S.-only plan providing 15 hours of audiobook listening per month. Unused hours expire at the end of each monthly period; they do not roll over.

Top Up hours
Top Up is for buying additional listening time after the included monthly hours are used. Spotify’s support guidance currently places payment for these extra hours on the web, even though the May 2025 iPhone announcement said U.S. users would be able to purchase them through the updated iPhone experience.
Where to pay when you cannot see a price in the iPhone app
- Open Spotify’s Web Player in a browser and sign in to the same account used on your iPhone.
- Find the audiobook’s title page.
- Use the purchase option shown there for an individual title, an eligible plan or Top Up hours.
- Return to the Spotify app and confirm that the purchased title or additional listening time is available.
If no purchase option appears on the Web Player, check that you are signed into the intended account and that your country and plan are eligible. Spotify’s audiobook catalog, plans and payment options vary by market.

What changed from Spotify’s original launch flow
When Spotify launched more than 300,000 U.S. audiobook titles on September 20, 2022, users who found a locked audiobook in the app were sent to a web page to complete the purchase before returning to the app to listen. The May 2025 announcement described a less restrictive iPhone experience with visible prices and purchase links. Current support pages still document web checkout, so the older web-based behavior may remain the operative route for some users.

Why you might not see a Spotify audiobook price
- Your account is outside the United States, where the May 2025 iPhone announcement was not documented as available.
- Your plan or country does not include audiobook access or Top Up purchasing.
- The app is showing Spotify’s web-checkout flow rather than an in-app purchase control.
- You are viewing a title that requires an individual purchase instead of being covered by your monthly hours.
- The app or account has not received the relevant feature rollout.
Check the Web Player before concluding that the audiobook cannot be bought. If the title still has no purchase option, Spotify’s account-specific support is the appropriate next step.

Practical answer for iPhone users
In the United States, Spotify announced direct audiobook pricing and purchase links for iPhone users in May 2025. As of Spotify’s currently published support guidance, the dependable documented method is still to complete individual-title, plan and Top Up transactions on the Web Player and then listen in the iPhone app. Treat any in-app Buy or Top Up button as account-specific until Spotify’s current product documentation confirms a universal change.
