For editing an existing photorealistic photograph, Adobe Firefly is the most purpose-built choice in the documented feature set. It combines Prompt to Edit, Generative Fill, background replacement, Photoshop integration and production tools. Choose ChatGPT when you want the simplest conversational workflow: upload a photo and explain the change in plain language. Choose Midjourney when creative reinterpretation matters more than preserving every detail and you want a web Editor with erase, inpainting and outpainting.
There is no universal winner for “realism.” Results depend on the source image, prompt, mask, model version and how strictly you need to preserve identity, geometry and lighting. The recommendations below are based on each service’s published capabilities, not a controlled test using identical photographs.

What “photorealistic photo editing” actually requires
Editing a supplied photograph is different from generating a new image from a text prompt. A useful edit should retain the subject’s identity, perspective, proportions, texture and light direction while changing only the requested area. Typical jobs include removing a person or object, replacing a background, extending the edges of a frame, changing a product color, repairing an old area, or making a local correction.

Five capabilities determine whether a tool is suitable:
- Source-photo fidelity: whether the subject, face, geometry and lighting survive the edit.
- Local-edit control: masking, erase or paint selection, inpainting, outpainting and background replacement.
- Creative reinterpretation: how strongly the model changes the image beyond the instruction.
- Production workflow: integration with professional editors, batch operations, credits and export options.
- Commercial-use clarity: published rights and training-data information, including any limits for partner models.
A tool can be excellent at one axis and weak at another. For example, a visually attractive result is not automatically a faithful edit, and a technically faithful edit may not be the most imaginative version.
ChatGPT Images: easiest for instruction-led edits
What it can do
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images can create new images and edit existing ones. Upload a photograph, describe the desired change in the editor text box, and let the model apply the instruction. OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance for GPT Image 1.5 also describes image generation and editing, photorealistic output and reference-based edits.

Basic workflow
- Open ChatGPT Images and upload the photograph you want to change.
- Describe the edit in plain language. Identify the subject, the exact area to change and the parts that must remain untouched.
- State preservation requirements, such as “keep the person’s face, pose, clothing texture and camera angle unchanged.”
- Review the result for identity, edges, shadows, reflections, text and repeated patterns.
- If something drifted, make a narrower follow-up request that names the defect and repeats the preservation requirement.
- Export the approved version and retain the original file separately.
Where ChatGPT is strongest
- Natural-language control: You can explain intent rather than construct a complex mask or command.
- Fast iteration: Follow-up instructions let you refine an edit in the same conversation.
- Mixed editing tasks: The same workflow can remove an object, adjust a background and add or correct text.
- Reference-based work: GPT Image 1.5 documentation describes using references when generating or editing photorealistic images.
Where to be cautious
Conversational convenience does not guarantee pixel-level control. If the model changes more of the photograph than requested, use an explicit, localized instruction and identify what must not change. Inspect faces, hands, logos, small lettering and hard geometric edges at full resolution. The available documentation does not establish a universal fidelity score or a guaranteed result for every type of photograph.

Midjourney Editor: best when reinterpretation is acceptable
How the Editor works
Midjourney’s web Editor is designed for both Midjourney images and users’ own photographs. Upload the image, use Paint or Erase to select the area, then describe the replacement in the Imagine bar. The documented Edit model supports targeted inpainting and outpainting.
- Open the Editor on midjourney.com and upload your own photograph or select an existing Midjourney image.
- Use Erase or Paint to define the region that should change. Keep the selection as tight as the intended edit, while including enough surrounding context for a believable blend.
- Describe the replacement in the Imagine bar, including material, lighting, camera viewpoint and the relationship to nearby objects.
- Generate several variations and compare the transition at the mask boundary, the subject’s proportions and the direction of shadows.
- For a broader composition, use outpainting and specify what should continue beyond the original frame.
- When you need the prompt to dominate over Midjourney’s stylistic tendencies, add
--raw; Midjourney says this reduces extra creative flair.
Why choose it
- Visual exploration: It is well suited to trying alternate environments, wardrobe ideas, lighting moods or compositions.
- Direct region editing: Paint and Erase make the intended area visible before generation.
- Inpainting and outpainting: You can replace a selected region or extend the canvas beyond its original boundaries.
- Creative control: The
--rawoption can make the prompt more influential when you want less automatic stylization.
Why it may not be the first choice for strict retouching
Midjourney’s strengths are tied to reinterpretation. Even when the result looks photorealistic, the model may redesign details that a documentary, product or identity-sensitive workflow needs to preserve. Check facial features, exact product geometry, text, architecture and reflections rather than assuming the source remains unchanged.
Midjourney states that users own images and videos they create, with an exception when upscaling another user’s image. That ownership statement does not replace a review of the service terms, the rights to your source photograph or any third-party material visible in it.
Adobe Firefly: the most complete documented photo-editing workflow
Core editing features
Adobe’s AI photo-editor documentation lists Prompt to Edit, Generative Fill, Generative Recolor, Replace Background, crop, resize and one-click Quick Actions. The editor is intended to work through text prompts without requiring advanced photo-editing skills.
- Open Firefly’s photo editor and import the photograph.
- Choose the operation that matches the job: Prompt to Edit for an instruction-led change, Generative Fill for a selected area, Replace Background for a scene swap, or Generative Recolor for color changes.
- Describe the desired result and include constraints such as viewpoint, light direction, material and the elements that must remain unchanged.
- Generate variations, then inspect edges, contact shadows, reflections, skin texture and repeating patterns.
- Use crop or resize to prepare the final composition, and apply Quick Actions when a one-click operation is sufficient.
- For detailed finishing, continue in Photoshop, where Firefly features are integrated into the Creative Cloud workflow.
Why Firefly fits production work
Adobe documents Firefly Creative Production workflows for Remove Background, Color Grade and Crop Image on qualifying paid plans. Those operations are relevant when you need consistent treatment across many assets rather than a single experimental edit. Photoshop integration also lets a retoucher combine generative changes with layers, selections and conventional adjustment tools.

Firefly’s commercial-use and training-data statements
Adobe says current Firefly models were trained on licensed content, such as Adobe Stock, together with public-domain content. Adobe also says it does not train Firefly on Creative Cloud subscribers’ personal content. For features without a beta label, Adobe states that Firefly-generated outputs may be used in commercial projects.

Which tool fits common editing jobs?
Removing a person, cable or distracting object
Use Firefly Generative Fill when you want a purpose-built selection-and-replacement workflow, or ChatGPT when describing the cleanup conversationally is more convenient. Midjourney can do the job through Erase and inpainting, but inspect the surrounding texture and geometry carefully because it may redesign nearby details.
Replacing a background
Firefly has a dedicated Replace Background feature and can continue into Photoshop for masking and refinement. ChatGPT is a practical choice for a quick instruction such as “replace the plain wall with a softly lit studio background while keeping the subject’s outline and shadow.” Midjourney is appropriate when the new setting is part of a larger visual concept rather than a faithful commercial replacement.
Changing a product or clothing color
Firefly’s Generative Recolor is the clearest documented match. In any tool, specify the exact material and preserve highlights, seams, logos and surface texture. Verify that the recolor has not altered branding or the product’s physical shape.

Extending a photograph beyond its frame
Midjourney explicitly documents outpainting, making it the most directly supported option in this comparison. ChatGPT can perform reference-based edits, but the supplied documentation does not describe a dedicated outpainting control. Firefly’s listed tools include crop and resize; do not assume those operations add new scene content.
Preparing many commercial assets
Firefly is the strongest documented fit because Creative Production workflows cover Remove Background, Color Grade and Crop Image on qualifying paid plans, and Firefly integrates with Photoshop and Creative Cloud. ChatGPT and Midjourney may still help with individual concepts, but comparable batch capabilities are not established in the reviewed documentation.

Before publishing an edited photograph, separate four questions that are often confused:
- Do you have rights to the source? Editing a photograph does not grant permission to use an image you do not own or license.
- Does the service permit your intended use? Read the current terms for your plan, region and model.
- Is the output from the provider’s own model or a partner model? Adobe’s commercial-use statement is specific to Adobe Firefly models and says partner-model outputs need a separate judgment.
- Are people, logos or protected places visible? Model output permissions do not automatically cover publicity, trademark or property concerns.
Adobe’s published position is unusually specific: current Firefly models use licensed and public-domain training content, Adobe says subscriber personal content is not used to train Firefly, and non-beta Firefly outputs may be used in commercial projects. Midjourney’s published ownership statement covers images and videos users create, except when upscaling another user’s image. The supplied official statements do not establish an equivalent commercial-use conclusion for ChatGPT, so obtain the current terms for your account and use case before relying on it for client work.

How to improve realism in any of the three tools
Write a constraint-first prompt
Start with what must remain unchanged, then describe the edit. For example: “Keep the person’s face, hair, pose, jacket texture, camera angle and late-afternoon shadows unchanged. Remove the parked car on the right and reconstruct the street and curb naturally.” This is more reliable than a vague request to “make it look better.”
Describe physical evidence
Include light direction, focal perspective, depth of field, material, scale and contact shadows. A replacement object should sit on the same surface, cast a compatible shadow and show the correct amount of blur for its distance from the camera.
Mask narrowly, then expand only when needed
A tight mask protects the original photograph. If the seam is visible, enlarge the mask slightly to give the model enough surrounding pixels for blending. Large masks invite unnecessary changes to faces, hands, logos and architecture.
Inspect at full resolution
- Compare eyes, teeth, fingers and jewelry with the original.
- Check straight lines, repeated windows, text and logos for warping.
- Look for halos around hair, foliage and transparent objects.
- Confirm that shadows, reflections and noise match the untouched areas.
- Verify that a background replacement has not changed the subject’s outline or color spill.
Keep an audit trail
Save the original, the prompt, the selected region and the final export. For client or regulated work, record the model or feature used and whether it was labeled beta. This makes later corrections and rights reviews easier.

Firefly plans and generative credits
Adobe’s 2026 Firefly comparison lists the following prices and monthly generative-credit allowances:

These are Adobe’s listed 2026 plan figures; taxes, billing terms and availability can vary by region. Adobe’s credits FAQ says Photoshop Generative Fill using Firefly models is generally a standard feature that uses one credit per generation, and paid Firefly plans provide unlimited access to standard image generations. Confirm the live plan page before subscribing because prices and entitlements can change.
No comparable current price for ChatGPT or Midjourney was established in the reviewed official material. Do not infer that their plans cost the same as Firefly or that a particular feature is included without checking the current plan terms for your region.
A practical decision framework
- Must the original subject remain nearly identical? Start with Firefly, especially if Photoshop finishing or a documented photo-editing operation is important.
- Is your main constraint ease of communication? Try ChatGPT Images and write a preservation-first prompt.
- Is the goal a new visual direction rather than strict continuity? Use Midjourney Editor, with Paint or Erase for local control and
--rawwhen you want less automatic stylization. - Will the work become a repeatable commercial pipeline? Favor Firefly’s Creative Cloud and Creative Production options, then review the model and rights terms for every asset source.
- Are you choosing solely on “best realism”? Do not make that claim from these capabilities alone. Test the exact image type, mask size and prompt style you will use, because quality varies by case.
Bottom line
Firefly is the safest starting point for faithful, production-oriented photo editing because its documented tools, Photoshop integration, batch workflows and Adobe-model rights guidance address the full job. ChatGPT is the quickest route from a plain-language request to an edited image. Midjourney is the better creative laboratory when you welcome reinterpretation and need an Editor with inpainting and outpainting. Choose based on how much of the original photograph must survive, not on a blanket claim that one model is always the most photorealistic.
