There is no universally safest chatbot for sensitive work. The deciding factors are the account tier, deployment path, model, region, contract and retention settings—not simply whether the logo says ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or DeepSeek. A consumer chat app can retain conversations and permit review in ways that differ materially from its business workspace, API or cloud-marketplace version.
For a practical starting point: OpenAI documents the clearest enterprise defaults in this comparison; Anthropic’s controls vary substantially by deployment; Google documents both human review and short-lived modes with important exceptions; and DeepSeek’s current official policy needs to be checked directly before you entrust it with confidential material. Treat every service as a processor of your data, not as a private notepad.

Choose by deployment before choosing a brand
Ask these questions in order. Your answer determines which privacy policy and contract actually apply.

Consumer chats commonly remain in your history until you delete them, and service providers may retain selected material for safety or improvement.
- Are you using a business or enterprise workspace? Business terms can disable training by default, add administrator retention controls, provide audit and identity features, and create contractual obligations that do not exist on a personal plan.
- Are you calling an API? API logging, abuse monitoring, model-specific retention and zero-data-retention eligibility can differ from the provider’s chat website.
- Is the model supplied through a cloud marketplace or another host? The host’s region, logging, support access and data-processing addendum may govern the request as much as the model maker’s policy.
- Which model and region are involved? A policy can apply only to particular models, countries, or account configurations. Record those details before approving a sensitive use case.
If you cannot answer all five questions, you do not yet have a reliable privacy assessment. A brand-level ranking would hide the uncertainty.

The table compares documented policy positions, not a security test or benchmark. Availability can change by date, country, plan and model.
What OpenAI documents for ChatGPT
Business and enterprise defaults
OpenAI’s Enterprise Privacy page, updated January 8, 2026, states: “By default, we do not use your business data for training our models.” The same page says, “Your workspace admins control how long your data is retained.” OpenAI also documents encryption at rest and in transit and reports completion of SOC 2 Type 2.
Those statements are useful only when your request is actually covered as business data in the relevant workspace or contract. Confirm that the account is an enterprise or business offering, that the model and tools you plan to use are included, and that your organization’s retention setting is finite if policy requires one. A personal ChatGPT account does not inherit enterprise defaults merely because the user works for a company.

Consumer chats, deletion and temporary mode
Regular consumer ChatGPT conversations remain in the account until you delete them. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. That is a deletion schedule, not a promise that every copy disappears immediately; legal, security or abuse-prevention exceptions can affect processing under the applicable terms.

Temporary Chats are not a zero-retention mode. OpenAI documents that they may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. Use the mode only when that window is acceptable, and do not interpret the temporary label as permission to paste credentials, unreleased keys or regulated records.
Questions to verify before sending confidential material
- Is the conversation in a personal account, a managed business workspace or an API project?
- What retention period has the workspace administrator configured?
- Do connected tools, uploaded files, custom assistants or logs have separate retention?
- Does your contract cover the country and data categories involved?
- Can administrators or support personnel access content for security, troubleshooting or legal reasons?
What Anthropic’s Claude documentation means in practice
Retention is deployment-specific
Anthropic’s documentation does not support a single retention number for every Claude product. Current API documentation says some local session transcripts are stored for six years by default unless an organization has a finite custom retention policy. That is a strikingly long default for a sensitive-work decision, even if it applies only to the documented local-session arrangement.
Separate 2026 guidance for certain covered models requires 30-day retention and indicates that zero-data-retention arrangements may not be supported by default. The two figures are not contradictory: they describe different models or deployment conditions. Identify the exact model, endpoint, account type and policy before relying on either number.

How to evaluate a Claude deployment
- Record the endpoint, model identifier and whether the traffic is consumer, organizational or API traffic.
- Ask Anthropic which transcript, abuse-monitoring and diagnostic logs are created.
- Request the applicable retention schedule in writing, including backups and support cases.
- Confirm whether a finite custom policy or zero-data-retention arrangement is available for your organization and model.
- Check whether uploaded files, tool calls and feedback are retained under different rules than prompt text.
Do not transfer a retention promise from an API document to the public chat product, or from one model family to another, without confirmation.

What Google documents for Gemini
Human review is an explicit part of the policy
Google’s Gemini Apps privacy FAQ, last updated October 19, 2026, says: “A subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers (including Google’s trained service providers) to help improve Google services.” Google also says, “Reviewed chats are retained for up to three years.” Before using a personal Gemini account for confidential work, decide whether trained reviewers or service providers may see the material and whether a three-year retention possibility is acceptable.
Keep Activity off and temporary chats
Turning Keep Activity off prevents future chats from appearing in Activity and prevents them from being used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. It does not mean the request is processed without storage. Google says chats made with Keep Activity off, and temporary chats, are retained with the account for 72 hours for response, safety and feedback processing.
The 72-hour period is shorter than ordinary history, but it still permits operational access and safety handling. Submitting feedback can change the treatment of a conversation, so do not use the feedback control on a confidential exchange unless your organization has approved that path.

Why DeepSeek requires a verification-first approach
The current official DeepSeek privacy policy was not available for verification in the material underlying this comparison. Therefore, no confident current claim should be made here about whether prompts train models, where data is stored, how long chats or backups persist, whether personnel review interactions, or which enterprise controls exist.
This is not proof that DeepSeek is unsafe, nor proof that it is safe. It is an information gap. For sensitive work, an information gap is enough to pause deployment until the provider supplies a current policy, data-processing agreement and retention statement that cover your exact account and region.
Minimum documents to request
- Current privacy policy and terms for the product you will use.
- Data-processing agreement identifying processors, storage regions and international transfers.
- Training-use statement covering prompts, files, feedback and human review.
- Retention and deletion schedule covering live systems, backups, logs and support tickets.
- Enterprise security documentation, incident-notification terms and administrator controls.

A safe workflow before you paste, upload or connect anything
- Classify the material. Label it public, internal, confidential, personal, regulated or secret. If classification is unclear, treat it as confidential.
- Minimize the payload. Remove names, account numbers, exact dates, customer identifiers, credentials, private keys, tokens and unnecessary attachments. Replace them with consistent placeholders outside the model where possible.
- Choose the approved deployment. Prefer an organization-managed workspace or API with a signed data-processing agreement. Record the provider, model, region and account tier.
- Read the retention rule. Check ordinary chats, temporary modes, uploaded files, tool traces, abuse logs, backups and support tickets. Write down the actual number of days or the fact that it is not stated.
- Check training and review. Determine whether prompts, outputs, feedback or files can be used for model improvement and whether human reviewers or service providers can access samples.
- Disable unnecessary integrations. A connector can copy sensitive content into another system with its own retention and permissions. Use the minimum tools required.
- Run a low-risk test. Test with synthetic data, then inspect the account history, export, audit log and deletion behavior before using real material.
- Set an exit plan. Know how to delete conversations, revoke tokens, remove files, request account-level deletion and document completion. Deletion should be verified, not assumed.
Deletion is a process, not a button
Deleting a conversation usually starts a scheduled workflow rather than an instantaneous erasure from every system. The relevant clock can differ for the visible chat, uploaded files, safety logs, backups, human-review copies and legal holds.

When your policy requires deletion, capture the request date, scope and confirmation. Ask whether backups and support systems are included, and whether a legal or security exception applies. If the provider cannot explain those boundaries, escalate before sending additional data.
Enterprise procurement checklist
Security, legal and procurement teams should require written answers rather than relying on a consumer-facing setting.
- Training: Is customer content excluded by default, and does that exclusion cover prompts, outputs, files, feedback and abuse samples?
- Retention: What are the default and configurable periods for transcripts, files, logs, backups and reviewed samples?
- Deletion: What event starts the deletion clock, how long can permanent deletion take, and what exceptions apply?
- Human access: Which employees, contractors or service providers can view content, under what controls and for what purposes?
- Administration: Are SSO, role-based access, audit logs, export, legal hold and organization-wide retention policies available?
- Security: Is data encrypted in transit and at rest? Which independent assurance reports and penetration-test summaries are available?
- Location: In which countries are prompts, files, support data and backups processed, and can residency be selected?
- Subprocessors: Who receives the data, and how are changes notified?
- Incident response: What is the notification deadline, investigation process and customer-support channel?
- Model changes: Does a new model, feature or tool alter retention or training treatment without a new contract?
If sensitive data was already sent
- Contain the exposure. Revoke or rotate credentials, tokens and certificates immediately. Disable integrations that may have copied the material.
- Preserve facts. Record the account, workspace, model, timestamp, conversation identifier and exact categories of data involved.
- Delete through every available control. Remove the chat, files, projects, feedback and connected-tool records, then request provider deletion if the contract allows it.
- Notify the right owners. Involve your security, privacy and legal teams; regulated data may trigger specific assessment or notification duties.
- Ask targeted questions. Request confirmation of retention, human access, subprocessors, backups and whether the content was used for improvement.
- Prevent recurrence. Add data-loss-prevention rules, block personal accounts for work, and provide an approved redaction workflow.
Bottom line for each service
- ChatGPT: The documented enterprise position is comparatively concrete—business data is not used for training by default, administrators control retention, and encryption and SOC 2 Type 2 are documented. Consumer chats and temporary chats still have retention windows.
- Claude: Treat retention as a configuration question. The six-year local-session default and separate 30-day covered-model guidance demonstrate why model and endpoint identification is mandatory.
- Gemini: Its policy clearly discloses human review and a possible three-year retention period for reviewed chats. Keep Activity off and temporary modes reduce the window to 72 hours for service, safety and feedback handling, not to zero.
- DeepSeek: Do not approve confidential use until its current official policy, retention schedule, review practices and enterprise terms are verified for your deployment.
For any provider, the safest pattern is data minimization plus an approved enterprise or API deployment with contractual training exclusions, finite retention, controlled access and a tested deletion process. If those conditions cannot be demonstrated, keep the sensitive material out of the chatbot.
