ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can all help with spreadsheet work, but their documented workflows differ—and none of the available product documentation establishes which is most accurate on demanding professional Excel tasks. The key shortfall is often not a missing formula; it is whether an assistant can see the workbook context, act on the file, and leave you with something you can verify.
Where each assistant works—and what that means
“AI for spreadsheets” describes several different interactions. An assistant might analyze a copy of a file you upload, create a downloadable workbook, edit a spreadsheet open in an application, or return text through a spreadsheet function. Those differences affect what the assistant can see and what it can change.

| Assistant and workflow | What the vendor documents | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets | An in-product sidebar experience that can help create or update workbooks using natural language. OpenAI’s documentation identifies VBA automation and Power Query among the Excel capabilities the integration does not support. OpenAI Help Center | The listed limits apply to this integration. They do not establish that ChatGPT cannot help draft VBA or discuss Power Query in another workflow. |
| ChatGPT data analysis | Analysis of uploaded files, including spreadsheets; ChatGPT can answer questions about data and create tables or charts. OpenAI Help Center | This is an uploaded-file workflow, not evidence that every workbook dependency or application-specific behavior is understood. |
| Claude file creation and editing | Claude can create and edit files, including Excel spreadsheets, with downloadable files and Google Drive saving described by Anthropic. Claude Help Center | Creating or editing a file is distinct from live editing inside Excel. |
| Claude in Google Sheets | The integration can read and edit the spreadsheet open in the Sheets interface. Claude Help Center | Anthropic says this integration cannot open, create, or copy other Drive files. |
| Gemini AI function in Google Sheets | Google documents using the function to generate text tailored to sheet content and to summarize or analyze data. Google Docs Editors Help | Google says the function does not access the entire spreadsheet or other files in Drive. |

Yes, but the answer depends on which ChatGPT workflow you mean. OpenAI documents both a spreadsheet-native experience for Excel and Google Sheets and data analysis of files uploaded to ChatGPT. The sidebar is intended to help create or update workbooks in place; uploaded-file analysis lets you ask questions about a spreadsheet and request tables or charts.

Where the Excel integration falls short
OpenAI’s documentation lists VBA automation and Power Query among the advanced Excel capabilities not supported by the ChatGPT spreadsheet integration. That matters if your workbook depends on macros or query-based data preparation: the sidebar should not be treated as a replacement for those features. This is a boundary of that integration, not a blanket statement about every way ChatGPT can help with VBA or Power Query.
Why an uploaded workbook may not be enough
File analysis can be useful for inspecting data, but an answer about the uploaded copy does not by itself prove that ChatGPT has accounted for every workbook dependency or that the calculations are right. A result that looks plausible still needs to be checked in Excel, especially when formulas refer to other sheets, depend on hidden content, or feed business-critical outputs.
Can Claude create or edit an Excel spreadsheet?
Anthropic documents Claude creating and editing Excel files, which can then be downloaded, as well as saving files to Google Drive. That is a file-generation workflow: it should not be confused with a documented live-editing sidebar inside Excel.

That integration can read and edit the spreadsheet open in the Sheets interface, but its documented access is scoped: it cannot open, create, or copy other Drive files. A workflow that can edit the active spreadsheet is not necessarily able to gather supporting data from other files in the same Drive.

Can Gemini analyze an entire Google Sheet?
Google’s stated limit for the AI function in Sheets is that it does not have access to the entire spreadsheet or to other files in Drive. Google describes the function as useful for generating text tailored to sheet content and for summarizing or analyzing data, but that is not the same as giving it whole-workbook or cross-file context.
For a question whose answer depends on information outside what the function can access, provide the relevant context in an allowed way or use a workflow designed to work with the necessary file. Do not assume the function has inspected every sheet simply because it is being used from within a spreadsheet.

Why these assistants can still fall short on professional workbook work
Workbook tasks combine more than cell-level arithmetic. A useful result may depend on formulas, references, data preparation, hidden rows or sheets, blanks, formatting, and application behavior. The documented workflows above differ in their access and actions, so a correct-looking response is not proof that an assistant saw the full context or changed the right thing.
- Access can be narrower than the task. An uploaded copy, an open spreadsheet, a spreadsheet-native sidebar, and an AI function do not imply the same access to workbook contents or other files.
- Advice and action are different. A generated formula or explanation is not the same as a validated change in the spreadsheet application. Likewise, creating a file is not the same as editing the live workbook you use.
- Feature coverage is specific to the workflow. A documented integration limit should be read as a limit of that integration, not as proof that the model cannot discuss or draft something in another context.
- Verification remains part of the work. Spreadsheet behavior must be checked in the actual application, not inferred from fluent prose or a plausible output.
How to check an AI-generated spreadsheet answer
- Confirm what the assistant could see. Identify whether you uploaded a file, selected or opened a sheet, or used a spreadsheet function. Establish whether the task needs other sheets or files that were not in scope.
- Test formulas against known answers. Check the formula itself and its references, then compare its result with a value you can independently verify.
- Probe edge cases. Test blanks, errors, unusual values, and records at the boundaries of the expected range. Review hidden rows and sheets where they could affect the result.
- Recalculate and inspect in the spreadsheet application. Check that the workbook behaves as intended after the change; do not treat a model’s proposed formula or generated file as validated merely because it opened.
- Review changes before using the output. Confirm that the assistant edited the intended cells and did not omit, overwrite, or alter material that the task depended on.
Is one assistant more accurate for Excel?
The vendor documentation cited here does not provide a matched benchmark or comparative error rate for professional Excel tasks. It describes features and boundaries, not which assistant produces the most accurate result on the same complex workbook. A defensible ranking would require testing the same tasks across defined product versions and account plans, with workbook complexity and verification criteria reported.
Best Value
Choose based on the work surface and access you need: in-product spreadsheet assistance, uploaded-file analysis, file creation and editing, editing an open Google Sheet, or an AI function in Sheets. Then verify the result against the workbook and the underlying business rules. Product availability and capabilities can vary by account and change over time, so check current vendor documentation before making a workflow decision.
