Before you reimage a server for Odoo, confirm the Odoo release and edition, choose an operating system supported by that release, identify where PostgreSQL will run, and make sure you can restore both the database and any separately stored files. Reimaging the operating system and reinstalling Odoo do not, by themselves, recover an existing business instance. Do not erase the server until you have a verified recovery plan.
What to confirm before you reimage
- Identify the Odoo release and edition. Record the major version and whether you use Community or Enterprise. Installation packages, supported operating systems, and access requirements vary by release and edition.
- Check operating-system support for that release. Odoo’s package documentation identifies Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for Odoo 19. For Odoo 18, it identifies Debian 12 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. These are release-specific package support statements, not a universal list for every Odoo version. Check the documentation for your intended release before choosing the image: Odoo 19 package installation and Odoo 18 package installation.
- Locate PostgreSQL. Odoo requires PostgreSQL. The documented package setup defaults to a database server on the same host, but your current installation may use a separate database host. Confirm the host, access method, and credentials before rebuilding.
- Plan recovery of the existing instance. Establish how the database and uploaded files will be restored, and verify that the backup is usable. The official installation material cited here does not provide a complete backup-and-restore runbook or attachment-restoration procedure. Follow the recovery guidance for your exact version and deployment before any destructive work; do not assume that reinstalling the application restores business data.
- Note dependencies and customizations. Record required add-ons, configuration, integrations, and reporting needs so you can account for them after the operating system and Odoo are installed.
Choose an installation route
Choose a route that matches your target release, operating system, and use case. Odoo describes distribution packages as a preferred way to install dependencies for source deployments; its source guide warns that pip can cause security or broken-dependency problems. Follow the instructions for the exact release rather than relying on old commands or another version’s package list.

| Route | When it may fit | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution package | A conventional service-style installation on a supported Linux distribution. | Odoo documents packaged installers and service setup. Check OS compatibility first. Enterprise packages require access as a paying on-premise customer or partner. Odoo 19 package documentation; Odoo 18 package documentation. |
| Source installation | Development or a deployment that needs greater control over source and dependencies. | Dependency management is more manual. Odoo recommends distribution packages for dependencies and cautions against pip-related security and dependency issues. Follow the matching release’s source guide: Odoo source installation. |
| Windows package | Testing or a single-user local instance. | Odoo discourages production deployment on Windows because of platform limitations and risks. It describes Windows packaging as intended for testing or single-user local use in its packaged installer documentation. |
Plan the PostgreSQL connection
For a same-host package installation, Odoo’s documented default is a local PostgreSQL server. A split-host setup needs deliberate database access and network configuration. Odoo’s version 16 configuration reference describes PostgreSQL defaults involving UNIX sockets and loopback connections, and discusses SSH tunneling or network access, potentially with SSL, for remote connections. Because that reference is specific to an older release, do not copy its exact settings into a newer deployment without checking current guidance for your Odoo and PostgreSQL versions: Odoo 16 deployment configuration.

- Record the target. Write down the Odoo major version and edition, intended operating system, and whether the installation will use a package or source.
- Map the database and files. Confirm whether PostgreSQL is local or remote and identify where uploaded files and other persistent data are stored.
- Verify recovery before wiping. Confirm that the database and separately stored files are backed up and recoverable. Use the official backup and restoration instructions applicable to your deployment; installation documentation alone is not a complete recovery procedure.
- Reimage only after the recovery plan is ready. Once the target operating system is installed, follow the matching Odoo release’s official package or source instructions. Avoid commands copied from a different release because supported distributions and dependencies change.
- Check the rebuilt instance. After installation or restoration, verify service startup, database connectivity, required add-ons, and reporting behavior. These are checks to perform on your server, not results guaranteed by the installation route.
Check PDF reporting requirements
Odoo 18’s package documentation says wkhtmltopdf must be installed manually at version 0.12.6 for PDF headers and footers. This is a version-specific note, so confirm the requirement in the documentation for your target Odoo release and whether your reports need headers and footers: Odoo 18 package installation.

When not to proceed alone
If you cannot verify recovery of the database and files, or cannot determine how your production Odoo instance connects to PostgreSQL, stop before erasing the server. Resolve those questions with the person responsible for your backups or deployment, or seek qualified Odoo migration or hosting assistance. A clean installation is not a substitute for a migration or restoration plan.
