If I mainly read books and write notes, I’d choose the 2025 monochrome Kindle Scribe over the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Color is useful for certain pages, but it is not a general upgrade for a device used mostly for black-and-white reading and handwriting. That is a personal, use-case-based verdict—not proof that the monochrome model is better for everyone.
Which Kindle Scribe models are being compared?
This comparison is between Amazon’s Kindle Scribe (3rd Generation, 2025) and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation, 2025). They are distinct from earlier Kindle Scribe models and from the smaller Kindle Colorsoft e-reader. Amazon’s device guide identifies both Scribe models and lists each with 32GB or 64GB storage. Amazon’s Kindle identification guide provides the generation and feature details.

What changes when you choose Colorsoft?
The practical difference is the display: Colorsoft can show color on the page; the monochrome Scribe is for black-and-white content. Amazon says Colorsoft supports ten pen colors, five highlighter colors, and a shading tool. Those options can help when marking up color-coded documents or viewing illustrations and comics. If your books and notes are almost entirely monochrome, the added colors may not matter much.

In a 2026 hands-on review, TechRadar reported 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. The reviewer, who used the device for four weeks with books, comics, and manga, found black text clear but described color as muted, including in Vivid mode. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled comparison with the monochrome Scribe or a guarantee of how every reader will perceive the display. What do the two models share?
Amazon describes both 2025 devices as part of the redesigned Scribe lineup, with an 11-inch glare-free display, a 5.4 mm-thick body, and a weight of 400 g. The company also says the new monochrome Scribe is 40% faster for writing and page turns; that is Amazon’s manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement. Amazon’s announcement of the redesigned Scribe lineup gives these specifications and feature details.
Both models include Amazon’s Premium Pen, which attaches magnetically and does not need charging. Amazon also describes shared tools for Quick Notes, document markup, AI-powered notebook search with summaries and follow-up questions, and integration with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for document import and annotated PDF export. OneNote sharing is also listed. Amazon says Alexa+ document sharing is available in the U.S.; availability should not be assumed in other markets. Which Scribe makes more sense for your work?
Choose the monochrome Kindle Scribe if…
- You mostly read text-heavy books and take handwritten notes.
- You do not need colored annotations, illustrations, or comics on the device.
- You would rather avoid paying for a display capability that does not serve your regular reading or writing.
Choose the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft if…
- Seeing color on the page is central to your reading or annotation workflow.
- You regularly work with color-coded notes, illustrated material, or comics and want those colors visible on the Scribe.
- You have seen the display in person or are otherwise comfortable with the reported 150 ppi color resolution and the possibility that color may look muted to you.
Neither choice changes the basic role of the redesigned Scribe: both are large-screen reading and handwriting devices with Amazon’s shared productivity features. The deciding question is whether color will improve tasks you actually do, rather than whether it sounds appealing as a specification.

Amazon’s 2025 U.S. announcement does not establish a fixed current U.S. price and directs customers to regional listings. Compare live listings in your own marketplace before making a value judgment; prices and availability can change. The sources also do not establish exact folio compatibility across generations, so confirm that an accessory listing names your specific 2025 Scribe model before ordering.
