Before pasting sensitive information, change the model-improvement setting and use the provider’s one-off private mode. In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. For a single sensitive exchange, start Temporary Chat, and check Settings > Personalization so memory and other personalization features are not applied. In Claude, open Privacy Settings, review the model-improvement choice, and use an Incognito chat for sensitive one-off work.
These settings reduce model-training use and visible history; they do not promise instant deletion, absolute secrecy, or exemption from safety, legal, abuse-prevention, feedback, or workplace-administrator access. Confirm the labels shown in your current account before sending anything confidential.

- Remove unnecessary identifiers. Redact names, account numbers, addresses, credentials, medical record numbers, customer data, private keys, and any detail that is not essential to the answer.
- Choose the provider’s one-off mode. Select ChatGPT Temporary Chat or a Claude Incognito chat rather than an ordinary conversation.
- Disable model improvement for your account. In ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone. In Claude, review the model-improvement choice in Privacy Settings.
- Check personalization. ChatGPT memory, custom instructions, and connected plugins are separate from the model-training toggle. Claude’s Incognito mode has separate handling from ordinary chats.
- Do not submit feedback on the sensitive exchange unless you accept the additional data use described by the provider.
- Delete the conversation afterward if it was saved. Deletion removes visible history quickly, but backend retention follows each provider’s stated schedule and exceptions.
If the information could cause financial, legal, medical, employment, safety, or identity harm if exposed, the safest option is not to paste it into a consumer AI service at all. Use an approved enterprise or internal system whose contract and administrator controls match your obligations.

ChatGPT: settings to change before sharing
Turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
In a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” This is an account-level choice for new conversations; it does not erase conversations already listed in your history.
The setting controls model-improvement use, not every form of processing. OpenAI may still retain or inspect content for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance, service operation, or other purposes described in its current consumer-services documentation. A workplace administrator can also impose retention or access rules on a managed account.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive exchange
Start a new conversation and select Temporary Chat before entering the material. OpenAI describes Temporary chats as staying out of chat history, not creating or updating memories, and not being used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary.

OpenAI says it may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. That retention window is a safety measure, not a promise that the provider has no access during the period. Temporary Chat also does not override legal obligations, abuse investigations, or an organization’s administrative controls.
Review personalization, memory, and connected features
Open Settings > Personalization separately. Memory and model-training controls do different jobs. Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not automatically remove saved memories, custom instructions, or information supplied through connected plugins and other integrations.
If your interface offers a Temporary Chat personalization choice, disable personalization for the sensitive exchange. This prevents existing memories and custom instructions from being used in that chat. Review and delete saved memories separately if they contain confidential information; deleting a chat does not automatically delete a saved memory created from it.

Be careful with feedback
Do not assume that an opt-out protects a conversation after you rate it. OpenAI says feedback can cause the entire associated conversation to be used for training even after you have opted out of general model improvement. Avoid thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a sensitive chat unless you have confirmed the current consequences in your account documentation.
Delete an ordinary ChatGPT conversation
If you used a regular chat, delete it from the conversation list using the chat’s menu and deletion command. This removes it from your visible history, but it is not the same as deleting every related record immediately. Saved memories, uploaded files, exports, safety records, and organization-controlled copies may follow separate retention rules. Check each feature individually rather than treating chat deletion as a universal eraser.
Business and organizational accounts
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API offerings is not used by default to improve models. The exact retention period, administrator access, audit logging, and regional handling depend on the product and the organization’s configuration. A managed workspace can retain or review data even when a personal-account control is unavailable. Read your organization’s policy and ask the administrator which workspace, retention, and export rules apply before uploading regulated information.
Claude: settings to change before sharing
Review the model-improvement choice in Privacy Settings
In Claude, open Privacy Settings and review the model-improvement setting before sending sensitive content. Anthropic’s consumer documentation says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude when the user allows it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when the user otherwise explicitly opts in.
Read the current wording in your account rather than relying on an older screenshot. Consumer and commercial products can have different terms, administrator controls, and retention schedules. An account-level choice affects ordinary conversations; it does not eliminate safety, legal, or abuse-prevention processing.

Use an Incognito chat for sensitive one-off work
Choose Incognito chat before entering the material. Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore the clearest choice for a single confidential task when you do not want that exchange used for model improvement.

Incognito does not mean that no copy exists or that the conversation is exempt from safety review, legal process, or security monitoring. Avoid treating the label as a guarantee of absolute secrecy.
Delete a Claude conversation
Deleting a Claude conversation removes it from chat history immediately. Anthropic’s July 1, 2026 privacy guidance says backend deletion occurs within 30 days. The 30-day period is a deletion schedule, not an assertion that every copy disappears at the instant you click delete.
Anthropic also documents exceptions and longer periods. If model improvement is allowed, de-identified data in model-training pipelines may be retained for up to five years. When a chat or session is flagged by automated Usage Policy systems, inputs and outputs may be retained for up to two years, and trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. Legal claims, disputes, policy enforcement, or safety requirements can require longer retention.

Anthropic may analyze a conversation that is flagged for safety safeguards. Feedback data can also be retained for five years under the documented policy. Do not provide feedback on a sensitive conversation unless you understand that it may create a separate retention path.

How to prepare sensitive text safely
Redact before you open the chat
Privacy settings cannot make an unnecessary identifier necessary. Replace a person’s name with “Employee A,” an account number with its last four digits, and an exact address with a city or region. Remove passwords, API keys, session cookies, encryption keys, private documents, and identifying screenshots. For a contract, paste only the clause relevant to the question instead of the entire file.
Give the minimum context needed
State the task without exposing the underlying secret. For example, ask for a rewrite using a fictional name and describe the data type rather than pasting a real customer record. If an exact value matters, use a realistic substitute and explain the format.

Check uploads and integrations
Files, images, browser-connected tools, plugins, and copied content can create additional data paths. Before uploading, inspect the file for hidden comments, document metadata, tracked changes, embedded images, and unrelated pages. Disconnect integrations you do not need for the task.

- Open Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone.
- Open Settings > Personalization. Review memory and custom instructions; delete or disable anything that could expose confidential context.
- Start a new Temporary Chat. If a personalization option appears, turn personalization off for that chat.
- Redact the text, remove unnecessary files, and verify that no credential or identifying field remains.
- Ask the question without submitting a rating or written feedback.
- When finished, close the temporary conversation. Remember that OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
Step-by-step: a safer Claude workflow
- Open Privacy Settings and review the model-improvement choice. Disable it if you do not want ordinary new chats used for improvement.
- Start an Incognito chat before entering sensitive material.
- Redact names, identifiers, credentials, and unrelated sections. Inspect every upload for hidden metadata.
- Do not submit feedback on the conversation unless you accept the possible retention and review consequences.
- End the Incognito session. If you used an ordinary conversation, delete it from chat history and note Anthropic’s stated 30-day backend deletion window.
What happens if you already pasted sensitive information?
If it was in ChatGPT
Delete the conversation from history, then inspect Settings > Personalization for memories created from it and remove those memories separately. If you uploaded a file, remove the file from the relevant storage or conversation area as well. If you submitted feedback, treat the associated conversation as potentially subject to the feedback-related training rule. For a managed account, notify your administrator or privacy contact because workspace retention may override personal controls.
If it was in Claude
Delete the conversation immediately. Anthropic says it disappears from chat history at once and is deleted from backend storage within 30 days, subject to documented exceptions. If the content involved credentials, revoke or rotate them; deleting a chat does not invalidate a password, token, API key, or shared link.
If the information creates a legal or safety risk
Follow your organization’s incident-response process. Preserve only the records required by that process, notify the responsible security or privacy team, and rotate exposed credentials. Do not paste the same secret into another service while trying to investigate the first exposure.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“I turned off training, so the chat is private.”
No. In ChatGPT, the opt-out stops new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, but ordinary chats remain in history and can still be processed for safety, legal, operational, or administrative reasons. Claude’s model-improvement choice has similar limits.

No. ChatGPT documents up to 30 days of safety retention for a Temporary Chat copy. Claude documents separate handling for Incognito chats and a 30-day backend deletion period for deleted conversations. Neither label promises instant destruction or absolute secrecy.
Deleting a chat deletes memory too.

A personal setting controls a work account.
Managed workspaces can impose administrator access, retention, audit, and export policies. Confirm which account and workspace you are using before sharing regulated or company-confidential data.
Choosing between the services for a sensitive task
Neither service should be treated as a confidential vault. Choose based on the controls you can verify in your current account:
- Need a one-time answer with no ordinary history entry? Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat or Claude Incognito chat.
- Need to prevent new ordinary chats from model improvement? Turn off ChatGPT’s Improve the model for everyone or disable Claude model improvement in Privacy Settings.
- Need guaranteed contractual handling? Use an approved business or enterprise workspace and read its data-processing and retention terms.
- Need to protect a secret itself? Do not paste it. Redact it, use a synthetic example, or keep the operation inside a system designed for that secret.
Provider labels and eligibility can change. Before every sensitive exchange, verify the control is still present, enabled or disabled as intended, and applied to the account and workspace you are actually using.
