Work through those layers in that order. Do not start by reinstalling the app or buying a headset; neither can grant a denied permission or bypass a blocked network.
This guide covers the web experience, iPhone, Android, and the desktop Work/Codex experience, with separate checks for missing Voice controls, “ChatGPT can’t hear me,” no playback, interruptions, echo, and repeated disconnections.

First, identify the failure
The symptom usually tells you which control layer to inspect. Use this table before changing settings.

1. Confirm that Voice is available on your surface
Web, iPhone, and Android
Voice is documented for supported web, iOS, and Android experiences. Sign in to the account that should have access, open a normal chat, and look for the Voice control in or beside the prompt area. A missing icon is not a microphone failure: it can mean that the account, region, workspace, or current product surface does not expose Voice.
- Update the ChatGPT mobile app from your device’s official app store if it is behind the current version.
- Sign out and back in with the intended account. A personal account and a managed workspace can have different controls.
- Open a fresh text conversation and check whether the Voice control appears there.
- If the icon remains absent, test the supported web experience or mobile app. If it is missing everywhere, treat the issue as an availability or policy restriction rather than a hardware fault.
Desktop Work/Codex
The desktop Work/Codex experience has its own permission model and limits. It may require microphone permission plus Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions when computer context is involved. Only one Voice conversation can run at a time. Close any other active Voice session before starting a new one. OpenAI documents these requirements in ChatGPT Work and Codex.
2. Restore microphone permission
Voice cannot capture speech until both the operating system or browser and ChatGPT have access. OpenAI’s instruction is: “If prompted, allow the ChatGPT app to access your microphone.” If you previously denied the prompt, reopen the relevant privacy settings and enable access manually.

- Open Settings and choose Privacy & Security.
- Tap Microphone.
- Turn on the switch for the ChatGPT app.
- Return to ChatGPT, select the Voice icon, and start a call.
- Inside the call, check that the microphone control is not muted.
If ChatGPT is not listed, launch Voice once so iOS can present the permission request, then return to the Microphone settings. If the permission switch is unavailable because of device management or parental controls, an administrator must change the policy.

Android
- Open Settings and go to Apps (the label can vary by manufacturer).
- Select ChatGPT, then Permissions.
- Set Microphone to Allow while using the app or the equivalent available option.
- Reopen ChatGPT, select Voice, and verify that the in-call microphone button is enabled.
Android can also show a microphone privacy indicator or a device-wide microphone toggle. Make sure the system-wide microphone control is enabled before testing again.
Web browser
- Open ChatGPT in the browser tab where you want to use Voice.
- Select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- When the browser asks to use the microphone, choose Allow.
- If you previously blocked access, open the browser’s site-permission panel from the address bar, change Microphone to Allow, and reload the page.
- In the browser or operating-system sound settings, select the intended microphone rather than a disconnected webcam or monitor input.
Browser permission is separate from the operating system’s permission. Both must allow access. A browser can show an enabled site permission while the operating system still blocks the browser application.
Desktop Work/Codex permissions
Allow microphone access in the operating system’s privacy settings. If you use computer context, also grant Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions when requested. Restart the desktop app after changing these permissions so it can reinitialize the capture session.

When ChatGPT cannot hear you
- Look at the microphone control inside the Voice call. A muted icon overrides every other setting.
- Speak while watching the operating system’s input meter. If the meter does not move, the selected microphone is wrong, disconnected, or blocked.
- Disconnect Bluetooth earbuds, webcams, docks, and USB microphones one at a time to identify whether the call is using an unintended input.
- Close another application that may have exclusive control of the microphone, then start Voice again.
- On a managed computer, verify that a privacy policy is not disabling microphone access for the browser or desktop app.
When you cannot hear ChatGPT
- Raise the device’s media or system volume; the physical ringer volume may not control Voice playback.
- Check the output device selected by the operating system. Audio may be going to a monitor, dock, Bluetooth device, or headset that you are not wearing.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headset, then restart the Voice call.
- Test a short text-to-speech or other audio source on the same device to determine whether the problem is system-wide.
OpenAI notes that higher device volume can help with interruptions. It does not replace a correct output selection or an unmuted speaker.

4. Reduce interruptions, feedback, and echo
Voice recognition and turn-taking degrade when the microphone hears room noise, another speaker, keyboard sounds, or the assistant’s own playback. Long pauses and overlapping speech can also make the exchange appear to stop.
Use headphones and a quieter room
- Move away from fans, open windows, televisions, and other conversations.
- Use headphones with a microphone so speaker output does not feed back into the input.
- Keep the microphone a short, consistent distance from your mouth and avoid covering it.
- Pause briefly after ChatGPT finishes speaking before you answer, especially in a noisy room.
A generic wired headset with a microphone can be a useful diagnostic accessory because it isolates the built-in microphone and speakers. It cannot grant permissions, correct a muted call, or bypass a firewall.
Enable Voice Isolation on iPhone
- Start a Voice conversation.
- While the call is active, open Control Center.
- Tap Mic Mode.
- Select Voice Isolation.
- Return to the call and test at normal speaking volume.
Voice Isolation is intended to reduce competing sounds; it does not repair a denied microphone permission or a failing network connection.

Voice is a live network session. A page can load normally while the audio WebSocket is blocked or closed by a firewall, proxy, TLS inspection, SSL decryption, or web-filtering system.

Test the scope of the failure
- End the call and restart it once on the same network.
- Switch from office, school, or hotel Wi-Fi to a trusted mobile hotspot. If Voice works there, the original network is the likely control point.
- Try another device on the same network. If every device disconnects, involve the network administrator rather than repeatedly changing app permissions.
- If only one device fails on multiple networks, inspect that device’s VPN, security software, proxy, or managed profile.
Ports and transport
OpenAI identifies UDP port 3478 as the preferred Voice transport. If UDP is unavailable, TCP port 443 can be used instead, although UDP is preferred. This guidance appears in Network recommendations for ChatGPT errors on web and apps.
On a managed network, an administrator may need to permit the current service ranges listed in OpenAI’s chatgpt-voice.json. Ask the administrator to review firewall, proxy, TLS-inspection, SSL-decryption, and WebSocket policies. Do not disable security controls on a work or school network without authorization.
Recognize a network-specific failure
- The Voice icon appears, but the call spins indefinitely or ends within seconds.
- Text chat works while Voice repeatedly disconnects.
- The same account works on a phone’s cellular connection but not on workplace Wi-Fi.
- Several users on one network report the same behavior.
These signs point away from the microphone hardware and toward transport filtering or proxy handling.
6. Check workspace, plan, region, and parental controls
Voice and connected apps are not necessarily identical across accounts. Access can depend on plan, region, app version, workspace settings, user role, selected model, product surface, provider requirements, and parental controls. A workspace administrator can restrict features even when the same person can use them in a personal account.

- Determine whether the problem occurs in a personal account, a managed workspace, or both.
- Ask a workspace administrator whether Voice is enabled for your role.
- Check parental-control or device-management settings if the account is supervised.
- Try the supported surface associated with your account instead of assuming web, mobile, and desktop have identical controls.
Connected apps can also be unavailable inside Voice while remaining available in text. OpenAI advises using a supported text conversation when an app is not available in Voice. See Troubleshooting plugins and apps in ChatGPT for the conditions that can affect app availability.
7. Platform-specific recovery paths
Web: icon present, no microphone input
- Allow microphone access for the ChatGPT site in the browser.
- Confirm the browser itself is allowed to use the microphone by the operating system.
- Select the correct input in system sound settings.
- Reload the tab, start a new Voice call, and check the in-call mute button.
- Test a private browser window or another supported browser to isolate an extension or site-permission conflict.
Web: audio plays through the wrong device
- Raise media volume.
- Open the system output selector and choose the speakers or headset you are actually using.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth and HDMI audio devices.
- Reconnect the Voice call after changing the output.
iPhone: intermittent recognition or feedback
- Confirm ChatGPT has Microphone permission.
- Use headphones or lower speaker volume.
- Enable Voice Isolation from Control Center during the call.
- Move to a quieter location and avoid speaking over playback.
- Restart the app if the permission was changed while it was open.
Android: Voice unavailable or silent
- Enable ChatGPT’s Microphone permission under the app’s Permissions screen.
- Check Android’s device-wide microphone privacy toggle.
- Raise media volume and select the intended Bluetooth or wired output.
- End other Voice sessions and reopen the app.
Desktop Work/Codex: permission or session conflict
- Allow microphone access for the desktop app.
- Grant Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions if computer context is required.
- Close any other active Voice conversation.
- Restart the desktop app after changing permissions.
- If the session still disconnects, test another network and review firewall or proxy handling.
8. What not to change first
- Do not buy a headset as the first step. It can improve echo and isolate hardware, but it cannot fix account restrictions or blocked UDP traffic.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the app. Reinstallation does not change a workspace policy, parental control, or firewall rule.
- Do not assume a missing icon means a broken microphone. Confirm feature availability and account context first.
- Do not treat text-chat success as proof that Voice networking works. Voice uses a live transport path that may be filtered separately.
9. Privacy and recording expectations
OpenAI states that audio clips from Live and Advanced Voice conversations, and video clips from Advanced Voice conversations, are stored with the transcript and retained for 30 days. Deletion can take up to 30 days, subject to the exceptions described in the ChatGPT Voice help page. This retention detail is separate from troubleshooting, but it matters when deciding whether to use Voice for sensitive conversations.
10. When to contact an administrator or support
Escalate after recording the exact symptom, platform, account type, network, and time of failure. Include whether the Voice icon is missing, whether permission prompts appeared, whether text chat works, and whether a different network changes the result.
- Contact a workspace administrator when policy, role, parental controls, proxy rules, or firewall settings may be involved.
- Contact your network administrator when UDP 3478, TCP 443, WebSockets, TLS inspection, or allowlisting is controlled centrally.
- Contact OpenAI support when Voice is unavailable on every supported surface and network after permissions, account context, and app version have been checked.
Keep the troubleshooting record factual: device and operating-system version, browser or app version, whether headphones were used, selected input and output devices, and the result of a second network test. Avoid sending private conversation audio unless support specifically requests it through an official channel.
