ChatGPT Statistics 2026: How Many People Use ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s latest dated figure is 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, but it is not a verified count of unique people. Here are the milestones and what the usage statistics actually measure.

How many people use ChatGPT? OpenAI’s September 29, 2026 DevDay recap describes ChatGPT as having “collective 1.2B weekly users.” That is the latest dated figure in the sources cited here, but it is a company-reported weekly-user figure—not a verified count of 1.2 billion distinct people.

ChatGPT user milestones, by date

OpenAI has reported several large usage milestones in 2026. The wording and dates matter: these are snapshots from separate company announcements, not a single independently audited series.

Date OpenAI-reported figure What it measures
February 2026 More than 900 million weekly active users Weekly activity; reported alongside separate subscriber counts. OpenAI’s February announcement
August 31, 2026 More than 1 billion weekly active users Weekly active users, in a post about expanding access to AI. OpenAI’s August post
September 29, 2026 “Collective 1.2B weekly users” Weekly users, as phrased in OpenAI’s DevDay recap. OpenAI’s DevDay recap

OpenAI’s wording changes between announcements—from “weekly active users” to “weekly users.” The September figure does not include a distinct-person counting method alongside it, so it should not be read as a precise census of unique humans.

Why weekly users are not the same as unique people

“Weekly users” is a measure of activity over a week, not necessarily a count of individual human beings. OpenAI’s Economic Research paper explains that logged-in counts rely on distinct login credentials, and one person may have multiple accounts. Logged-out activity can be counted through browser cookies; one person using multiple devices or clearing cookies may therefore be counted more than once.

That means the headline figure is best stated as OpenAI reports it: about 1.2 billion weekly users as of its September 29, 2026 recap. The sources cited here do not establish an independently audited global count of distinct ChatGPT users.

Weekly users, subscribers and business customers are different measures

In its February 2026 announcement, OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users, more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users. These figures describe different groups and should not be added together: subscribers and business customers are not additional categories beyond weekly users in a way that the announcement establishes.

Weekly activity indicates use during a period; a subscriber figure concerns paying consumer plans; and the business figure concerns paying business users. None of these numbers alone tells you how many distinct people use ChatGPT across every account type.

How ChatGPT’s reported audience grew

OpenAI Economic Research’s 2025 paper describes consumer-plan snapshots: more than 100 million logged-in weekly active users after ChatGPT’s first year, almost 350 million after its second year, and more than 700 million total weekly active users by the end of July 2025. The paper says that last figure was nearly 10% of the world’s adult population at that time; it is a dated comparison, not a current estimate of the share of adults using ChatGPT.

The historical figures are not a fully like-for-like series with every later announcement. The paper’s analysis covered Free, Plus and Pro consumer plans and excluded Business (formerly Teams), Enterprise and Education. Its account-counting caveats also apply when interpreting the figures.

What the usage data says beyond audience size

Daily messages increased

OpenAI Economic Research reported that daily ChatGPT message volume grew more than fivefold from July 2024 to July 2025. This is a change in message volume, not a count of users, and the paper’s analysis concerns consumer usage.

More messages were classified as unrelated to work

In the same research, an automated classifier estimated that the share of messages unrelated to work rose from 53% in June 2024 to 73% in June 2025. These percentages describe classified messages, not survey responses from people about why they use ChatGPT.

People in one sample tried more tasks over time

OpenAI Signals reported that, in its sample, users sent 50% more messages per day six months after signup than at signup and tried twice as many distinct tasks. The analysis used a 0.1% sample of accounts created from October 15, 2025 through May 1, 2026, with activity observed through May 31, 2026. It excluded banned users, users under 18 and accounts with no messages in their first 28 days. These results describe that sample, not every ChatGPT user.
