If the answer is still wrong, mark the important area and ask a focused follow-up. A file that never attaches is a different problem from an image ChatGPT can see but misunderstands, so diagnose those separately.
First, identify which failure you have
“ChatGPT can’t recognize my drawing” can describe three different situations. The remedy depends on which one occurred:

OpenAI says images are resized before analysis and that ambiguous or unclear pictures can produce less accurate results. Original filenames and metadata are not used for the interpretation, so renaming a file will not make the drawing more recognizable.
Make sure ChatGPT actually received the drawing
Before troubleshooting recognition, look for the image thumbnail in the conversation composer or message. If there is no attachment, ChatGPT has nothing to analyze.

If the attachment never appears
- Cancel the message and try attaching the file again from the same conversation.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and that your subscription or workspace permits image uploads.
- Check whether you have reached an upload-rate or storage limit. Limits can vary with plan, account settings, workspace, region and the client you are using.
- Check OpenAI Status for a service incident. Repeated failed attempts can sometimes count toward an upload-rate limit, so avoid rapidly retrying the same file.
- If the problem persists, try the same supported file in another supported ChatGPT client or browser after verifying that the issue is not account-wide.
Do not spend time rewriting the prompt until the thumbnail is present. Prompt changes cannot repair an attachment that was never sent.
Use a supported file under the 20 MB limit
OpenAI documents PNG, JPEG/JPG and non-animated GIF as supported image formats, with a 20 MB limit per image. A drawing saved in another format may need to be exported before attaching it.
Prepare the file
- Open the drawing in your phone, computer or scanner’s image editor.
- Export or save a copy as PNG or JPEG/JPG. Use PNG when crisp line art or small text is important; JPEG can be suitable for a photograph of paper when the export remains clear.
- Check the file’s properties and keep it below 20 MB. If it is too large, export a sensible-quality copy or reduce dimensions while keeping the feature you want analyzed legible.
- Attach the converted copy and verify that its thumbnail appears before sending your question.
Non-animated GIF is listed as supported; animation does not add useful information for a single sketch. The image limit applies to each image, so splitting a large drawing into several coherent views can be preferable to sending one unreadable, compressed picture.

A better prompt cannot recover lines that are missing from the pixels. Retake a photograph or rescan the page when the original is soft, dark, reflective or compressed.
Capture conditions that preserve lines
- Place the page on a flat surface and keep the camera parallel to it. This reduces perspective distortion.
- Use even lighting from both sides when possible. Avoid shadows from your hand, the phone or overhead lamps, and avoid glare on glossy paper.
- Increase contrast between the drawing and its background without clipping faint lines. A clean white page and dark marks are easier to separate than a low-contrast or patterned background.
- Hold the camera steady and review the captured image at full size. If thin strokes or labels are already unreadable to you, ChatGPT is unlikely to infer them reliably.
- Keep the page upright. OpenAI specifically notes weaknesses with rotated or upside-down images.
These steps improve the visual evidence; they are not a guarantee that a stylized or ambiguous sketch will receive the intended interpretation.

Keep context while enlarging important details
A tiny crop can make a line look clearer while removing the relationships that identify the object. Conversely, a full-page photograph can make a small label too small to read. Use both context and a detail view when the drawing contains a small, decisive feature.
A useful two-image arrangement
- Attach one upright image showing the entire drawing and its surrounding page or scene.
- Attach a second, closer view of the label, joint, face, symbol or other feature that matters.
- Tell ChatGPT which image is the overview and which is the detail, and ask it to reconcile them rather than treating the close-up as the whole object.
OpenAI recommends enlarging text without cropping away important details. If you must choose one image, enlarge the relevant area inside a wider crop instead of sending an isolated fragment.

Some errors are inherent to the visual task rather than to your file. OpenAI lists weaknesses with precise spatial localization, approximate counting, panoramic or fisheye-shaped images and certain visual elements. A drawing photographed at an angle, wrapped around a curved surface or presented upside down can therefore produce a confident but incorrect description.
Reduce geometric ambiguity
- Rotate the image so text and the main subject are upright before uploading.
- For a wide panorama or a page with severe perspective, provide a normal rectangular view or several overlapping views.
- For a curved or fisheye capture, take a flatter, closer photograph instead of relying on the distorted projection.
- When exact position matters, state the reference system: for example, “the small triangle in the upper-right quadrant” or “the second mark from the left.”
- For counting, ask ChatGPT to list the visible items and explain any uncertainty rather than assuming an unverified total.
If your question depends on a precise distance, angle or pixel-level location, treat the response as a best-effort interpretation and verify it yourself.
Tell ChatGPT what to inspect
“What is this?” leaves the model to decide whether you want an object label, a transcription, a description of lines or an artistic interpretation. A constrained request produces a more checkable answer.

Prompt for an uncertain sketch
Try: “Describe every visible shape first, without guessing. Then identify the object you think the drawing represents. If uncertain, list two alternatives and explain which lines support each.”

This sequence separates observation from inference. You can then challenge one mistaken observation instead of starting over.
Prompt for a particular detail
Use a location and a task: “Inspect the red-marked joint in the lower-left of the overview. Is it a hinge, a connector or an overlapping line? Quote the visible evidence and say what remains unclear.”
Specify colors, labels, orientation and the desired output when those attributes matter. If the drawing is a design or diagram, say whether you want a transcription, component list, topology explanation or a plain-language description.
Use markup to direct attention
Markup is useful when one small region is being overlooked. Draw a simple circle, arrow or colored box around the target on a copy of the image, leaving the underlying lines visible. Then explain what the mark means; otherwise the model may mistake the annotation for part of the drawing.

A reliable markup workflow
- Keep an unmarked overview so the original relationships remain available.
- Create a marked copy with one or two high-contrast annotations around the disputed area.
- Upload both, identifying the marked copy explicitly.
- Ask ChatGPT to inspect the marked region while using the overview for context.
Do not cover the line you want examined with a thick highlight. A narrow outline placed beside it preserves more evidence.

A wrong label does not prove that every part of the analysis failed. Point to the missed evidence and narrow the question.
- State the specific error: “You called the upper loop a circle, but it is open on the right.”
- Ask for a fresh description of that region before requesting a new identification.
- Request alternatives and the visual clues for each.
- Compare the response with the pixels yourself, especially for measurements, counts and exact positions.
For example: “Re-examine only the blue-marked shape. List its endpoints, crossings and whether the outline is closed. Then give the two most plausible interpretations.” This is more useful than repeating “look again” with the same unmarked image.
Use Sketch on a phone correctly
On mobile, invoke Sketch with @, draw directly, and use the available erase or undo controls while working. When the drawing is ready, confirm it with the checkmark, then add a written instruction about the subject, colors or style you want.

- In the message composer, enter
@and choose Sketch. - Draw the shape or annotation with your finger or stylus.
- Use erase or undo to remove accidental marks.
- Tap the checkmark to commit the sketch.
- Add a precise request, such as “identify the object, describe the three visible colors and note any uncertain feature.”
If the result is vague, add a second message that names the region or color to inspect. A freehand mobile sketch still benefits from the same upright orientation, context and clarity principles as an uploaded photograph.
When the image uploads but recognition remains poor
After confirming the file, format, size and capture quality, consider whether the drawing itself supports a unique answer. Abstract marks, overlapping strokes, erased lines, unusual symbols and missing views can legitimately have multiple interpretations. Ask for an evidence-based description and alternatives instead of forcing a single label.
- Request a transcription of visible text separately from object identification.
- Ask which parts are certain, probable or unreadable.
- Provide a reference image or a second angle only when you have permission to share it.
- Remove decorative borders or backgrounds that compete with the subject, but do not remove orientation cues or nearby labels.
ChatGPT’s response is an interpretation, not proof that the sketch depicts a particular object. Confirm safety-critical, technical or measurement-sensitive conclusions with the original plans or a qualified person.
Escalate a persistent upload problem
If a small, supported PNG or JPEG repeatedly fails to attach after you have checked the account and service status, contact OpenAI support. Include the account email, a screenshot of the error, the exact timestamp and time zone, the platform or browser, and the request ID if one is available. Those details help distinguish an account limit from a client or service failure.
Describe whether the failure occurs before a thumbnail appears, after the file is selected, or only when sending the message. That distinction prevents support from treating an attachment failure as a recognition-quality complaint.
A compact decision checklist
- Attachment: Is the thumbnail visible in the conversation?
- Format: Is the file PNG, JPEG/JPG or non-animated GIF?
- Size: Is each image below 20 MB?
- Capture: Is it upright, evenly lit, sharp and free of glare?
- Context: Can the whole drawing and relevant surroundings be seen?
- Detail: Are small labels or features enlarged without losing their relationships?
- Geometry: Is the image free of severe rotation, panorama or fisheye distortion?
- Instruction: Did you ask for observation first and identify the exact region or task?
- Verification: Did you challenge uncertain counts, positions and labels?
- Limits: If uploads fail, did you check account, plan, storage, rate limits and OpenAI Status?
Following the checklist separates a missing upload from a hard visual question and gives ChatGPT the clearest evidence available for the drawing you want it to understand.
