To stop new personal ChatGPT conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models, open Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. To stop personalization, go to Settings > Personalization > Memory and disable the memory controls you do not want. For a conversation that should not enter your history or create memories, start a Temporary Chat. These controls do different jobs: turning off training does not delete chats, turning off Memory does not erase saved information, and deleting a conversation does not remove a separately saved memory.
Which ChatGPT privacy control does what?
ChatGPT has separate controls for model-improvement use, chat-history visibility, personalization memory, and deletion. Choosing the right one matters because no single switch covers all four outcomes.

On a personal account, the most complete practical approach is to disable Improve the model for everyone, review every Memory option, use Temporary Chat for sensitive one-off conversations, and delete old chats or memories separately when removal is required.
Turn off ChatGPT model training on a personal account
On the web
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open the account menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
- Select Done if ChatGPT presents a confirmation button.
OpenAI says this account-level choice applies across your devices. You do not need to repeat it separately on another computer or phone while using the same account.

On iPhone or Android
- Open the ChatGPT app and open the sidebar.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Select Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
The switch affects future personal-account conversations. It does not make ordinary chats disappear from the history list or change how long those chats are retained. If your goal is removal, use the deletion procedure below.
The feedback exception
On personal accounts, selecting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on a response is a separate choice. OpenAI states that the entire conversation associated with feedback may be used to train its models even after you have opted out of model improvement. Avoid sending feedback on a conversation when your requirement is that it not be eligible for that use.
Disable ChatGPT Memory and personalization
Memory is separate from model training. It lets ChatGPT retain or reference details to personalize later replies. OpenAI’s controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace, so you may see some or all of the following labels.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Personalization.
- Open Memory.
- Review and disable the controls that match your requirement: Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, and, where shown, Memory summary.
- Use Manage to inspect or remove individual saved memories.
What each memory option means
- Memory: the main personalization feature. Turning it off stops or changes the creation and use of memories, but it does not erase old chats.
- Reference saved memories: controls whether information explicitly retained as a memory is used in replies. Existing saved items remain until you remove them through Manage.
- Reference chat history: controls whether past conversations can inform personalization. Turning this option off schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days; the original conversations stay in your history unless you delete them.
- Memory summary: where available, controls a summary view of remembered information. Its presence and exact behavior can vary with account type and rollout.
- Manage: the place to review and delete individual memories. Removing a memory is distinct from deleting the chat that supplied it.
If you need to remove a detail completely, delete the saved memory and the source conversation. Disabling a toggle alone is a behavior change, not a data-erasure request.
Use Temporary Chat when one conversation should leave no history
Temporary Chat is a conversation-level control. Start a new chat and choose the Temporary control; the exact location and appearance can vary by platform and interface version.
- It does not appear in your chat history.
- It does not create or update memories.
- It is not used to improve OpenAI models.
- OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Temporary Chat can still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins when personalized mode is selected. If you want to avoid using existing personalization context as well as avoiding new storage, choose the non-personalized option when ChatGPT offers that choice.

Do not save a Temporary Chat by mistake
Saving a Temporary Chat converts it into a regular chat. Once converted, it follows your account-level personalization and model-improvement settings and can appear in your history. Keep the conversation temporary from start to finish if that distinction is important.

Delete existing ChatGPT conversations
Privacy settings do not retroactively remove chats. Delete saved conversations individually when you need them gone from the account.
- Open the chat-history list.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Use its options menu and select Delete.
- Confirm the deletion prompt.
OpenAI says the chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to legal, security, or prior de-identification exceptions. Deleted chats cannot be restored.

Deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a memory that was saved from it. Open Settings > Personalization > Memory > Manage and remove the related memory separately. Conversely, removing a memory does not erase the conversation in which you originally mentioned the information.
Personal accounts versus managed workspaces
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces have different defaults and administrator controls. Content in these managed workspaces is not used to train OpenAI models by default. Administrators can control retention, Memory, access, and compliance settings, so an individual member may not see the same switches as a personal-account user.

Choose the right combination for common privacy goals

Troubleshooting privacy settings
The training switch is missing
Confirm that you are in the account menu for the intended profile and that you opened Data controls, not Personalization. On mobile, the path begins in the sidebar under your profile icon. A managed workspace may expose administrator-defined controls instead of the personal-account switch.
A chat still appears after turning off training
This is expected. Improve the model for everyone governs model-improvement use, not history retention. Delete the conversation if you want it removed from the chat list.
ChatGPT still knows something after Memory is off
Check whether the information is present in the current conversation, in a saved memory, in chat-history references, or in custom instructions. Turn off the relevant reference controls, remove the item under Manage, and delete the source chat when necessary. Memory settings do not rewrite messages already visible in the open conversation.

Verify that it was actually started as Temporary and was not saved afterward. Saving converts it to a regular chat. Interface labels can vary, so look for the Temporary indicator before sending sensitive content.
You gave a thumbs-up or thumbs-down
Feedback can make the associated conversation eligible for model improvement on a personal account, even when the general training switch is off. Treat feedback as a separate disclosure decision.
