ChatGPT Images does not currently document a separate maximum-resolution, HD, or fine-detail slider. The controls OpenAI documents for improving practical image quality are a specific prompt, an intentional aspect ratio, and iterative editing. You can create an image, inspect it at its intended use size, then request focused corrections or use the selection editor for local changes.
This guide explains exactly how to use those controls, how to write prompts that produce more visible detail, and which source-image and interface limitations can affect the result. OpenAI has not published a fixed pixel ceiling or a numerical benchmark showing how much any setting improves detail.

What you can control in ChatGPT Images
ChatGPT’s documented image workflow is based on instructions rather than a quality preset. You can start a new image from a prompt, open the Images area, or edit an image that ChatGPT generated or that you uploaded. The practical quality decisions are made in four places:

- The brief in your prompt: what the subject is, what it is made of, how it is lit, which features matter, and how the image will be used.
- The aspect ratio: selected with the picker or stated in the prompt so the composition fits a poster, slide, portrait, landscape canvas, or square post.
- Focused revisions: conversational instructions that correct one problem at a time instead of replacing the entire brief.
- Selection-based edits: highlighting an area and describing the local change, followed by a visual check and another correction if necessary.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text, add details within an image, or make a background transparent. Those capabilities make precise wording more useful than a generic request such as “make it high quality.”

Step-by-step workflow for the most detailed result
1. Start in ChatGPT Images
Open the Images area in ChatGPT, or begin a normal conversation and ask for an image. The documented feature is available on web, iOS, and Android, although availability and capabilities can vary with account, plan, app version, and rollout status.
2. Write a production brief, not a quality adjective
Before asking for the image, decide what a viewer must be able to see. Include the subject, materials, important small features, lighting direction, color palette, camera or illustration treatment, composition, and destination. If the image contains lettering, specify the exact words, capitalization, placement, contrast, and that the text must be readable.
For example, replace “a sharp product photo” with “a studio photograph of a brushed-aluminum desk lamp, visible machining lines on the base, crisp seam between the shade and arm, soft key light from upper left, subtle fill from the right, neutral charcoal background, three-quarter view, enough empty space on the right for a headline.” The second brief tells the model which details deserve attention.

3. Set the aspect ratio before composition drifts
Use the aspect-ratio picker or name the desired ratio in the prompt. Choose a portrait composition for a poster or phone story, a landscape composition for a presentation or banner, and a square composition when the destination crops to equal sides. OpenAI documents generation in any aspect ratio through the picker or a prompt request; it does not publish a fixed maximum pixel dimension for each ratio.
4. Generate a base image and inspect it at the intended size
Look at the image in the context in which it will be used. A small label that appears acceptable when zoomed in may be unreadable in a slide thumbnail; a face that looks detailed in a full-screen preview may lose important features in a small profile image. Check edges, repeated patterns, hands, faces, small lettering, and the relationship between the subject and the empty space.

5. Make one focused revision at a time
When the image is close, preserve what works and name only the change required. Useful instructions identify the object and its location: “Keep the composition, colors, and lighting. Replace the left-hand mug with a matte black ceramic mug, preserving the handle direction and table reflections.” For detail, ask for an observable result such as “clarify the woven fibers on the collar while keeping the fabric color and folds unchanged.”
6. Use the selection editor for local corrections
Select the area, describe the change, and review the entire output. Selection highlights are not always exact; OpenAI cautions that an edit may extend beyond the selected region. If a nearby object changes, narrow the instruction, select a slightly different area, or make a conversational edit that explicitly protects the surrounding elements.
7. Regenerate for a different destination shape when needed
The editor can change the aspect ratio and regenerate the image. Do this before adding final text or small decorative details, because a new crop can move the subject and alter the available negative space.
8. Save only after a final legibility check
Confirm that text is spelled correctly, important edges are intact, faces and hands look natural for the intended style, and the subject is not clipped by the destination crop. Save the version that meets the use case rather than assuming the last generation is automatically the best one.

A prompt blueprint for fine detail
The following structure keeps the request specific without relying on an undocumented “HD” command:
Create a [type of image] for [intended use].
Subject: [main subject and defining features].
Materials and texture: [surfaces, grain, fibers, reflections, finish].
Composition: [viewpoint, framing, subject position, negative space].
Lighting: [direction, softness, color, shadow behavior].
Style: [photographic, editorial, diagrammatic, painterly, or other treatment].
Text: “[exact wording]”, [font character, placement, contrast, and readability requirement].
Aspect ratio: [desired ratio].
Preserve: [elements that must not change].
Make small features visibly defined without adding clutter.Use concrete nouns and visible outcomes. “High quality,” “ultra detailed,” and “8K” are vague unless they are followed by the details that matter: readable lettering, clean object boundaries, visible wood grain, controlled reflections, separated hair strands, or clearly defined mechanical parts. Example: a portrait poster
“Create a vertical editorial portrait poster of a trail runner at dawn. Show fine moisture on the jacket, individual fabric stitches at the collar, realistic skin texture without plastic smoothing, warm rim light from the rising sun, cool blue shadow on the opposite side, runner positioned on the lower right, clear sky in the upper left for a title, and a clean, readable title reading ‘BEYOND THE RIDGE’. Keep the title inside the safe area and use a portrait aspect ratio.”
Example: a technical product illustration
“Create a landscape cutaway illustration of a compact espresso machine. Show the water tank, pump, boiler, group head, and tubing with distinct colors and clean boundaries. Use a neutral background, consistent line weight, labels with exact spelling, and enough spacing that no label overlaps a component. Keep the machine centered with margins for a presentation slide.”

Example: a controlled revision
“Keep every object, camera angle, and color unchanged. Increase the visibility of the engraved markings on the front panel, align the markings with the panel surface, and improve contrast without making them glow or changing their size.”
Aspect ratio is a composition setting, not a resolution promise
Ratio selection determines how much horizontal or vertical space the model has to arrange the scene. Match it to the final placement:

If you choose the wrong shape first, changing the ratio later can require a new composition. Treat the ratio as part of the initial brief, not as a cosmetic setting added after the image is finished.

- Over-editing: asking for several unrelated changes at once can alter elements you intended to keep. Split the request into separate revisions.
- Selection spill: a highlighted region is guidance, not a pixel-perfect mask. Inspect neighboring objects, shadows, reflections, and text after every local edit.
- Unclear protection rules: state what must remain unchanged, including camera angle, palette, background, object count, and placement.
- Late ratio changes: a new canvas shape can crop a face, move a product, or remove negative space. Recheck composition and lettering after regeneration.
Using uploaded reference images
OpenAI’s Image Inputs FAQ lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF support, with a 20 MB limit per image. Uploaded images are resized before analysis, and original file names and metadata are not processed. As a result, a tiny mark, fine label, or subtle texture in the source may not be available to the model at its original fidelity.
Reference-image performance can be weaker for non-Latin text, rotated text, graphs that use varying line styles, precise spatial localization, panoramic or fisheye images, and exact counting. If one of those properties is important, describe it in words as well as supplying the image. For a chart, state the intended labels and relationships; for rotated lettering, transcribe the text and specify its orientation; for a panorama, identify the exact region to preserve.
Prepare a reference before uploading
- Crop away irrelevant borders so the important subject occupies more of the frame.
- Use a supported PNG, JPEG, or non-animated GIF and keep the file at or below 20 MB.
- Describe which parts are references for style, layout, color, or identity; do not assume the model will infer your priority.
- State what may change and what must remain fixed.
Do not confuse interface appearance with image quality
ChatGPT’s Appearance, Contrast, Accent color, and Windows Text size options change how the application looks while you work. They can make prompts, controls, and previews easier to read, but the visual-settings documentation does not present them as image-resolution controls. Appearance is device or platform-specific; accent color can carry across supported devices, while contrast is documented for web and Windows. Changing these options will not add pixels or fine detail to a generated image.

- Is the intended use and destination ratio stated?
- Are the subject, materials, lighting, composition, and style specific?
- Are exact words quoted and their placement and readability defined?
- Did you inspect the first result at the size and crop where it will be used?
- Did you make focused revisions instead of changing several unrelated elements at once?
- After a selection edit, did you check the area around the highlight for unintended changes?
- If you used a reference image, is it a supported format and no larger than 20 MB?
- Have you manually verified text, faces, hands, labels, counts, and chart values?
What the official guidance leaves unspecified
OpenAI’s published guidance describes the workflow and input limits, not a measured resolution table. It does not state a universal pixel maximum, a guaranteed fine-detail level, or a numerical improvement from adding words such as “HD” or “8K” to a prompt. The dependable practice is therefore to specify visible requirements, choose the destination ratio, iterate on the result, and verify the saved image for the actual use case.
