ChatGPT limits depend on your plan, model, and tools; there is no permanent message cap that applies to every account. If ChatGPT is slow or showing an error, check the live status page before troubleshooting your device. To stop new consumer chats from being used for model training, turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data controls—this does not erase chat history.
What is my ChatGPT message limit?
There is no single limit that applies to everyone. Limits vary by plan and model, can change, and may be separate for features such as file and image uploads, voice, data analysis, and image creation. ChatGPT may show a notice when you reach an applicable limit and, where available, when it resets. Use that in-product notice and the current ChatGPT FAQ for your account rather than relying on an old number from another plan or model.

OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says everyday text chats on the Free tier are unlimited subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. That does not mean every model or feature is unlimited: separate limits may apply to model access and tools. Paid plans generally have higher limits than Free, but the applicable allowance still depends on the plan and model.

The notice can refer to the model you are using or to a specific feature, rather than all ChatGPT access. Check which model or tool the message names and whether it gives a reset time. If it does, follow that timing; if it offers another model or feature, that may remain available under a different limit. Workspace policies can also affect what is available to an account.

Is ChatGPT down right now?
Check the OpenAI Status page for current incidents. Status can differ by product or feature, so an incident affecting one part of ChatGPT does not necessarily mean all access is unavailable. A status check is the best first step before changing browser or network settings; the page reflects current conditions, not a guarantee that every individual connection is working.
Why is ChatGPT slow or showing an error?
A generic “Something went wrong” message, failed generation, or stuck response can come from a temporary service issue or from a browser, network, or device setup. OpenAI’s error troubleshooting guide and slow-response guide recommend checking service status first, then isolating local causes.
- Check the OpenAI Status page for an incident that matches the affected feature.
- Refresh the page or start a new chat. If a response is stuck, try a hard refresh; for a failed generation, try Regenerate.
- Open ChatGPT in a private window or try another browser or device. This helps identify whether browser settings or extensions are involved.
- Temporarily disable extensions that may interfere, especially privacy or security tools. If you use a VPN, proxy, secure DNS, or security filter, temporarily turn it off if safe to do so.
- Try another network if possible. A reliable connection matters for network and websocket errors, and peak hours can coincide with slower responses.
- If the issue continues, clear ChatGPT site data, including cookies, rather than clearing only cached files. Restarting the browser or device can also help isolate the problem.
If the same problem persists across browsers, devices, and networks, contact OpenAI Support through the Help Center. Include the approximate time, affected model and conversation, conversation URL, request IDs if shown, and any browser-console errors. OpenAI’s slow-response guide also recommends collecting a HAR file for persistent cases.
Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT?
Use the same sign-in method you used when creating the account: email and password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Choosing a different provider can lead to a different account or prevent access to the one you expect. If you are still signed in on another device, check Settings → Account for the account email before signing out.
For repeated login failures, follow the error message first, then check the OpenAI Status page. If no incident explains the problem, try a private window or another browser, device, or network; clear cookies and cache; and temporarily disable extensions that block scripts or tracking. Cloudflare verification loops may also be affected by VPNs or proxies, cookie or JavaScript restrictions, and rules on managed networks. OpenAI’s login troubleshooting guide covers these cases. Avoid creating another account or resetting credentials until you have checked that you are using the original sign-in method.
Are my ChatGPT conversations used to train models?
For consumer services, OpenAI says content may be used to improve model performance depending on your settings. The specific training control is Improve the model for everyone: when it is off, new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models. They can still appear in your chat history, so opting out of training is not the same as deleting chats.

OpenAI’s Data Usage for Consumer Services FAQ says a limited number of authorized OpenAI personnel and trusted service providers may access content for purposes such as investigating abuse or security incidents, providing support requested by users, handling legal matters, and improving models unless the user has opted out. OpenAI says content is not shared for marketing or advertising. Business offerings are treated differently: the FAQ says business data is not used for model improvement by default unless the customer opts in.

How do I turn off ChatGPT training?
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
For signed-in users, this setting applies across devices. For signed-out use, the setting is browser-specific. Available controls can vary by sign-in state, plan, and workspace settings. Turning the option off affects new conversations; it does not remove existing chats from history. See OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT for the current details.

Does turning off training delete my chats?
No. Training use, chat history, and deletion are separate controls. Turning off Improve the model for everyone stops new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, but those conversations can still appear in history. OpenAI says cleared chats are deleted within 30 days, except when they have already been de-identified and disassociated from the user or must be retained for security or legal reasons. Its consumer-services FAQ also says content is stored on OpenAI and service-provider systems in the United States and around the world.
