If Character.AI chat export is not working, use the built-in export command from the account that owns the chats, then allow Character.AI’s stated processing period for the email to arrive. On the website, open Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data. In the mobile app, open Profile → Settings (gear) → Export my data, then select Export data when prompted.
Character.AI says exports can take 3–4 weeks. The download link in the completion email remains valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. Missing history is a separate problem: older conversations may require the current site or app’s Migrate chat now action after the old/beta site was retired. Login failures also need a different fix because legacy password, Discord and Facebook sign-ins are no longer supported.

First, identify which failure you have
Export, chat migration, downloading and signing in are different account operations. Choosing the wrong remedy can make a normal delay look like data loss.

Do not request multiple exports merely because an email is late. First verify that you are in the intended account and that the request actually reached a confirmation state.

How to request a Character.AI data export
On the website
- Sign in to the Character.AI account that contains the conversations.
- Open your Profile.
- Choose Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Manage Account & Data.
- Choose Export data. Character.AI’s official wording is “Select Export data.”
Stay on the confirmation screen long enough to verify that the request was accepted. If the page returns to settings without any confirmation, record what happened and take a screenshot before trying again.
In the mobile app
- Open Character.AI and sign in to the account containing the chats.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Tap Export my data.
- Confirm the export request.
App labels can change between releases. If the command is not present, update the official app, force-close and reopen it, and check that you have not switched to another account. If it remains absent, use the Help Center’s Account Issues category to submit a ticket.
When the export email has not arrived
Character.AI’s Help Center says, “Your export may take 3-4 weeks to complete.” That is a processing estimate, not a promise that the message will arrive immediately. Count from the date you submitted the request and keep the confirmation screenshot.

- Search the inbox for Character.AI, including archived mail.
- Inspect spam, junk, promotions, social and quarantine folders.
- Review mailbox rules, blocked-sender lists and automatic forwarding.
- Check every address you may have used for Character.AI, including an Apple private-relay address.
- Do not rely on the address currently displayed in a different Character.AI account; the export goes to the address associated with the requesting account.
If the full 3–4-week period has passed without a message, submit a support ticket. Include the request date, account email, the sign-in method, and a screenshot showing the request or confirmation state. Avoid sending passwords, verification codes or the contents of private chats in the ticket.

Download as soon as the message arrives
The Help Center states, “The link will be valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent.” The seven-day clock starts when Character.AI sends the email, not when you first open it. Save the message and download the archive promptly rather than leaving it for later.
If the export option is missing
A missing command usually means you are in a different account, looking in the wrong settings level, or using a client whose labels differ from the documented flow.
Verify the account before troubleshooting the interface
- Compare the account’s email with the address you expect to receive the export.
- Check whether you signed in with Google, Apple or an email link and accidentally created a second account.
- Look for your familiar characters and recent conversations; an empty or unfamiliar profile is a strong sign that you are in the wrong account.
Use the documented navigation
On the web, the command is nested under Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data, not in an individual character’s menu. On mobile, it is under Profile → Settings → Export my data. Sign out and back in if the settings page appears incomplete, then retry from a current browser or the official app.

If the option is absent in both clients after you confirm the account, open the Help Center’s Account Issues route. State which client you used, its version if visible, your device and browser, and the exact settings path you followed. A screenshot of the settings page helps support distinguish a UI issue from an account-permission issue.

When the download link fails
Use the newest email
Requesting another export or receiving a later message can leave you with several links. Open the most recent export email and use that link. An older link can be outside its seven-day validity even when a newer request is still available.
Check session and browser conditions
- Sign in to the Character.AI account that made the request.
- Open the link in a current version of Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox.
- Temporarily disable content-blocking extensions for the Character.AI page if the link opens to a blank or blocked screen.
- Try a private window or a second current browser to rule out stale cookies.
- On a phone, try the official app or a mobile browser; on a computer, try the web interface.
- Keep the original email intact so support can inspect the message details if the failure continues.
Do not install an extension or buy software that claims to recover the archive. Character.AI documents the built-in export and support-ticket route; third-party downloaders can expose your conversations or sign-in token.
When the link is expired or repeatedly errors
Submit a ticket through the Help Center and explain whether the link is expired, returns an error immediately, or starts a download that stops. Include the export request date, the email-send date if shown, the account email and a screenshot of the error. Support can investigate the request; creating unrelated hardware or cloud purchases will not repair a server-side export link.

Understand the old-site retirement
Character.AI retired its old/beta site on September 24, 2024. The company says recent chats are available on the current website or mobile app, while older conversations may need manual migration. Migration can take a few days, and longer inactive chats may take longer.

Run the migration action
- Sign in to the account that originally created the conversation.
- Open the current site or app’s chat history.
- Search the history and open the relevant character or conversation.
- When Character.AI displays Migrate chat now, select it.
- Wait for the migration to finish before repeatedly refreshing or opening the same chat on multiple devices.
A chat missing from the recent list is not proof that it was permanently deleted. Try a saved chat URL, search the current account history and use the migration control before assuming the conversation is gone.
When migration does not restore the conversation
Record the character name, an approximate conversation date and any saved URL. Then contact support with those details and the account email. Character.AI’s public documentation does not promise that every deleted or unavailable chat can be restored, so account-specific recovery remains unresolved until support examines the account.
Do not confuse migration with export

An export request cannot force an old conversation to appear in the current history, and migration does not replace the account-data export process.
Login and account-access failures
Character.AI states that, as of July 30, 2024, legacy sign-in methods using an email-and-password combination, Discord and Facebook are no longer supported. There is no password-reset flow for the retired password system.
Use a supported sign-in method
- Choose Continue with Google, Continue with Apple or the email verification link option on the Character.AI sign-in page.
- Use the same Google or Apple identity, or the same email address, that was associated with the original account.
- Complete the verification in the same browser or app session where you started the request.
- After signing in, confirm that your familiar characters and chats are present before requesting an export.
Using a different identity provider can open a new, empty account. If your history disappears immediately after a successful login, sign out and retry with the original provider rather than creating more accounts.
If the verification email does not arrive
- Check spam, junk, promotions and mailbox quarantine.
- Search for Character.AI and verify that the address is typed correctly.
- Request one new link, then use the newest message instead of an older one.
- Try a current browser or the official app with extensions temporarily disabled.
If verification still fails, submit a ticket through the login-issue route. Include the sign-in method, account email, device, browser and screenshots. Never include a one-time verification code in a support request.
Choosing between waiting, retrying and contacting support

Security and privacy considerations
Character.AI’s December 17, 2024 incident post said a change temporarily made parts of some users’ account pages visible, potentially including chats. The company described most affected users as seeing only the first page of one chat. That statement describes the scope reported for that incident; it does not establish that ordinary missing-history reports were caused by it.
Treat an export archive as sensitive personal data. Store it in an encrypted location, restrict sharing permissions and delete temporary copies from shared computers. Do not paste full conversations, verification links or exported files into public forums when asking for help. A support ticket needs identifying details and error evidence, not your private chat content or credentials.
What to include in a useful support ticket
A precise ticket reduces back-and-forth and helps Character.AI distinguish an export queue from an account or migration problem.
- The email address associated with the account, written exactly as used for sign-in.
- The sign-in method: Google, Apple or email verification link.
- Whether you used the website or mobile app, including device and browser/app version when available.
- The date and approximate time of the export request or failed login.
- The exact settings path you followed and whether a confirmation appeared.
- For a failed download, the email-send date, link behavior and error text.
- For missing history, the character name, approximate chat date and any saved URL.
- Screenshots with email addresses, tokens and private message text redacted where possible.
Submit through the Help Center category that matches the problem: Account Issues for export and account-data problems, or the login-issue route for sign-in and verification failures.
Preventing a future loss of access
- Keep the email address used for Character.AI active and able to receive verification mail.
- Use one supported sign-in identity consistently instead of alternating providers.
- When an export email arrives, download it within the seven-day validity period and keep a second secure backup.
- Save important chat URLs and note character names and dates so an older conversation is easier to locate after a site migration.
- Review mailbox filters after changing email providers or security settings.
These steps do not change Character.AI’s server retention or guarantee restoration of a deleted chat, but they make account verification and future recovery more reliable.
