Analyses of its basalt let scientists compare far-side volcanism with nearside rocks returned by Apollo and Chang’e-5. The samples also contain non-basalt material that may help investigate lunar crust and impact history. These are comparisons between distinct sites and sample collections—not a controlled experiment that isolates a single near-side versus far-side difference.
What did Chang’e-6 bring back, and where did it collect it?
The Chang’e-6 mission collected 1,935.3 grams of lunar material by scooping and drilling on 25 June 2024. The landing site was in the southern Apollo basin, which lies inside the much larger South Pole–Aitken basin on the lunar far side. Earlier returned lunar samples, including Apollo and Chang’e-5 material, came from the near side.

That provenance makes Chang’e-6 distinctive: it gives researchers laboratory material from a far-side location, rather than relying only on remote observations. The location is relevant to both local mare volcanism and the geological history of a large ancient impact basin. But the landing site does not establish the origin of every fragment in the haul; some material may have been transported from elsewhere, and its source has to be investigated.
How old are the Chang’e-6 basalts?
Several studies date analyzed Chang’e-6 basalt to about 2.82–2.83 billion years ago. The small differences between published estimates reflect separate analyses and methods, not a single agreed-to-the-last-digit age for every rock in the collection.

- 2,830 ± 5 million years: a 2024 Science paper reported this age using lead–lead and rubidium–strontium dating.
- 2,823.0 ± 5.9 million years: a separate isotopic and compositional study published in 2025 reported this estimate.
- About 2.8 billion years: a Nature paper described far-side volcanism at this time and characterized its dated material as an old returned high-aluminium basalt.
These are ages for studied basalt material. They should not be confused with a remotely estimated age for a broad geological region, or treated as the age of all material returned by the mission.
What comparisons can scientists make with Apollo and Chang’e-5?
| Sample set | Where it came from and useful age context | What it helps investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Chang’e-6 | Far-side Apollo basin, within South Pole–Aitken; analyzed basalt dates to about 2.82–2.83 billion years. | Far-side volcanism, basalt chemistry, the distinction between local and transported material, and the basin’s geological context. |
| Apollo | Multiple near-side landing sites; the Apollo collection includes rocks from more than one site and age. | Variation among sampled near-side volcanic rocks. A Chang’e-6 study found a compositional resemblance to Apollo low-titanium basalt, offering a specific comparison of basalt chemistry. |
| Chang’e-5 | Near-side samples; the landing region’s volcanism is estimated at about 2.0 billion years old. | A younger mare-volcanism comparison with Chang’e-6’s older analyzed basalt. |
The Chang’e-5 figure is an estimated age for the landing-region volcanic unit, as summarized in a 2025 research paper; it is not the same kind of statement as an isotopic age measured on a particular Chang’e-6 basalt. Apollo, meanwhile, is not one rock type or one age: its multiple sites and materials provide a broader set of near-side comparisons.

Basalt chemistry and the Moon’s interior
One analyzed Chang’e-6 basalt resembles low-titanium basalts previously collected by Apollo. Comparing chemistry across these samples can help researchers test ideas about the rocks’ mantle sources and the processes that produced lunar volcanism. The finding applies to that analyzed material: it does not show that all far-side basalts resemble Apollo rocks, or that Apollo basalts form a uniform group.
Different volcanic eras
Chang’e-6 adds an analyzed far-side basalt age around 2.82–2.83 billion years, while Chang’e-5 provides a younger near-side comparison at a landing region estimated to be about 2.0 billion years old. The contrast helps scientists compare volcanic materials from different places and times. Because the age evidence is not identical in kind, it should not be reduced to a direct measurement of how much older one entire lunar hemisphere is than the other.

Why are some Chang’e-6 fragments not basalt?
Initial characterization reported mare basalt alongside breccia, agglutinate, glass and leucocratic fragments. In a 2025 analysis of shoveled material, researchers estimated that the studied portion was approximately 93.5% mare basalt and 6.5% exotic non-mare components. That split describes the analyzed shoveled material, not a universal composition for all 1,935.3 grams returned.
The non-basalt fragments may hold clues to highland crust or impact products associated with the basin. Their significance depends on determining where they came from; their presence alone does not prove that a fragment formed at the landing site or originated in a particular basin structure.

What the three collections can—and cannot—show together
Used together, the samples extend the range of lunar geology available for direct laboratory study. Apollo supplies material from multiple near-side sites, Chang’e-5 adds a younger near-side mare comparison, and Chang’e-6 brings far-side material from the Apollo basin region. Researchers can examine whether rock chemistry, age and mineral makeup vary across those settings, then evaluate explanations involving volcanic history, source regions and impact processes.

Marquee Moon's five bonus cuts includ four previously unreleased tracks- alternate versions fo signature songs "See No Evil", "Friction," and "Maruquee Moon," plus an untitled instrumental. Marquee Moon includes the full length version of "Little Johnny Jewel" on CD for the first time in it's entirety.
- They can compare particular rocks and sample portions. The low-titanium Apollo resemblance and the Chang’e-6 basalt ages are findings about studied material, not universal descriptions of either hemisphere.
- They can add far-side ground truth. Chang’e-6 makes it possible to analyze returned far-side material directly, complementing observations made from orbit.
- They cannot isolate hemisphere as the only cause of a difference. The missions sampled different geological settings, rock types and ages, and the samples were collected and analyzed in different contexts. A difference could reflect any of these factors rather than a global near-side/far-side divide.
