For a hiking pack with a load-bearing hipbelt, position and secure the hipbelt over your hipbones first; then snug the shoulder straps, adjust the load lifters and set the sternum strap so it stabilizes the harness without restricting movement or breathing. For a school backpack, use both shoulder straps and keep the bag close and centered—its straps should not be adjusted as though it were a hiking pack designed to transfer weight to a hipbelt.
How to fit a hiking backpack with a hipbelt
Fit the pack while it carries a representative load. REI suggests about 15 pounds for its home fitting check, while Osprey’s manufacturer instructions use 10–20 pounds. These are separate fitting demonstrations, not universal load prescriptions. REI’s pack-fitting guide and Osprey’s fit instructions describe the adjustment sequence.

- Loosen the straps, then put on the loaded pack. Start with the adjustment straps loose enough that the pack can settle into position.
- Center and secure the hipbelt over your hipbones. Tighten it evenly until it feels secure without pinching. If it sits too high or low, check pack height and torso adjustment instead of trying to fix the position by cinching harder.
- Snug the shoulder straps down and back. They should follow your shoulders closely, without a gap. In this hipbelt-transfer setup, they should not carry significant weight; REI’s fitting expert warns that excess shoulder-strap load can stress the shoulder, neck and upper-back muscles.
- Adjust the load lifters. Snug them to draw the top of the pack toward your body and stabilize the load. Do not pull so hard that the straps pinch your shoulder joints or lift away from your shoulders. REI uses an approximate 45-degree angle as a guide; Osprey gives a 30–60-degree range when torso length is correctly adjusted. These are source-specific fit heuristics, not a single mandatory angle.
- Set the sternum strap comfortably. REI suggests placing it roughly an inch below the collarbones. Buckle it just enough to keep the shoulder straps at a stable width; it should not restrict arm movement or breathing.
- Walk with the pack and make small adjustments. Notice pressure points and whether the pack stays stable. If discomfort continues, recheck torso length, hipbelt sizing and pack compatibility rather than repeatedly tightening straps.
How to adjust a school backpack
School backpacks are not necessarily designed to transfer a substantial share of the load to the hips. Use both shoulder straps and adjust them evenly so the bag stays close and centered on the back. If the bag has a waist or chest strap, secure it comfortably. Put heavier items close to the body and distribute belongings among the compartments.

For children and teens, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the bottom of the backpack should rest in the curve of the lower back. The pack should extend from waist level to about 1–2 inches below the shoulders, and should not hang more than 4 inches below the waistline. See the AAP’s backpack safety guidance.

Check load and discomfort in children
The AAP and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) give 15% of a child’s body weight as a guideline for a loaded school backpack. The AAOS describes it as a general guideline. It applies to children’s school backpacks—not as a universal adult hiking-pack limit—and does not establish that staying below the figure prevents injury. See the AAOS backpack safety guidance.
- Lighten or refit the pack if a child struggles to put it on, leans forward while carrying it or reports discomfort.
- Persistent pain, numbness or tingling should not be ignored. Check the load and fit, and seek appropriate medical advice rather than assuming the strap adjustment explains the symptom.
- The AAP advises consulting a pediatrician about a child’s back pain when it occurs at times other than wearing a backpack.
AAOS advises checking posture and symptoms while a student puts the backpack on, walks with it and takes it off. Its 2026 guidance also quotes pediatric orthopaedic and spine surgeon Sumeet Garg, MD, FAAOS, on the unnecessary strain a heavy, poorly fitted or incorrectly carried backpack can place on a child’s back, neck and shoulders.

When strap adjustments cannot fix the fit
Strap tension cannot correct a suspension that does not match your body. If the hipbelt will not sit over the hipbones, the shoulder harness does not contact your shoulders properly, or the load lifters cannot be set comfortably, recheck the pack’s torso adjustment and belt sizing. REI recommends seeking pack-fitting expertise if measuring or fitting at home is difficult. If you compare another hiking pack, consider torso sizing and adjustability, hipbelt fit and position, shoulder-harness contact, and whether its load lifters and sternum strap can be adjusted comfortably.
