What does “3x better scratch resistance” mean?
Apple says Ceramic Shield 2 has “3x better scratch resistance” than the previous generation. The wording is a comparison of scratch resistance, as Apple presents it in its product materials and model comparison page. Apple iPhone comparison

The cited Apple material does not state the test protocol, sample size, standards body, or detailed conditions behind that figure. Treat it as Apple’s comparative claim, not an independently established measurement or a guarantee about how a particular phone will fare in daily use.
What the claim does not establish
- It does not mean scratch-proof. “Better scratch resistance” is not a promise that the glass cannot be scratched.
- It is not a drop-protection figure. Apple’s scratch-resistance comparison does not establish three-times-better drop, crack, or shatter performance.
- It does not apply retroactively. Apple’s comparison of Ceramic Shield 2 with earlier Ceramic Shield wording does not mean older iPhones gained the newer material through a software update.
iPhone Duo has different materials on its two displays
Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2 description applies to iPhone Duo’s front, or outer, display. Apple describes the inner folding display separately: it has a scratch-resistant coating and a custom polymer nano-textured cover layer, with high-strength glass above and below the folding display panel. Front and back materials are not the same specification
When comparing these phones, distinguish the front display material from the back. Apple lists Ceramic Shield 2 on the front of the iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro models, while specifying Ceramic Shield on their backs. The two names describe the placements Apple lists; do not assume the back has the same Ceramic Shield 2 specification as the front. Apple technical specifications
