Yes—there are free data recovery options for Mac, but “free” can mean anything from an open-source recovery tool to a limited allowance or a preview-only scan. The clearest no-cost open-source option in this guide is CGSecurity’s TestDisk and PhotoRec. EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free advertises up to 2 GB of recovery, with Mac SD-card recovery excluded. What to do first after losing files on a Mac

How to tell whether “free” includes file recovery
Before scanning, check what happens after the tool finds files. A scan may identify deleted data, and a preview may let you inspect it, while saving the recovered files still requires payment. Look for a stated free recovery allowance and file or device exclusions. The distinction matters especially with EaseUS’s Trial edition.
- Free recovery: The software lets you save at least some recovered data without paying, subject to any stated cap or condition.
- Free scan or preview: You can search for or inspect files, but that does not mean you can save them without a paid upgrade.
- Open-source download: The project makes the software available without a commercial recovery allowance like the one stated by EaseUS. Use official documentation and do not treat availability as a promise that a particular file will be recovered.
Use Time Machine as a recovery option
If you have a Time Machine backup, restoring from it may be safer and more direct than attempting file recovery. Apple says Time Machine’s default schedule keeps hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for prior months. Apple recommends a backup disk with at least twice the storage capacity of the Mac. macOS Recovery is built into the Mac and can restore from a Time Machine backup. To reach it, use Apple’s startup instructions for your Mac’s processor type: start up from macOS Recovery. A backup disk can be an external storage device; Apple recommends at least twice the Mac’s capacity for Time Machine.
Choose a route based on your situation
- You have a Time Machine backup: Check it first, then restore using Apple’s instructions.
- You need an open-source route: Start with CGSecurity’s TestDisk and PhotoRec download and official documentation. Choose the stable release rather than the separately labeled WIP beta unless you have a reason to use beta software.
- You want a limited commercial free allowance: EaseUS states up to 2 GB for its Mac Free edition, but that allowance does not include free Mac SD-card recovery. Confirm you have Free, not the preview-only Trial.
What no free tool can promise
Whether files can be recovered depends on what happened to the data and the condition and subsequent use of the storage.
