A production host that remains on either release no longer receives the project’s normal security fixes, so migration is an operational priority rather than a future optimization.
The safest replacement depends on your applications, support obligations, and recovery capability. RHEL offers the most formal vendor-backed path and Convert2RHEL for eligible RPM-based systems; Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux preserve a CentOS-like operating model; Ubuntu and other non-RPM systems usually require a rebuild and application porting. No option eliminates testing, backups, or a defined rollback point.

Why CentOS migration is urgent
CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life (EOL) on June 30, 2024. The CentOS Project ended CentOS Linux 8 updates on December 31, 2021. After those dates, the distributions no longer receive their normal updates and security fixes. Red Hat states that organizations running CentOS Linux must migrate to another operating system to continue receiving updates, patches, and new features.
EOL does not automatically stop a server. Existing binaries may continue to run, but newly discovered vulnerabilities, certificate changes, hardware support requirements, and dependency updates become your responsibility. Running an isolated legacy system can be a temporary containment measure, not a substitute for a supported operating system. Record the exception, restrict network access, and set a dated migration deadline if an immediate move is impossible.

Which operating systems can replace CentOS?
Evaluate candidates against five questions: How long will this release be supported? Who provides commercial escalation? What subscriptions or licenses are required? Are your applications and agents certified? Can your team operate the package, security, and lifecycle model? “RHEL-compatible” describes important similarities, but it does not guarantee identical behavior or certification across every workload.
| Candidate | Typical migration route | Support and cost considerations | Compatibility cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| RHEL | Eligible RPM-based CentOS systems may use Convert2RHEL; otherwise rebuild. | Vendor-backed support and a documented conversion path; budget for a subscription and verify eligibility for any Extended Life Cycle Support or migration offer. | Confirm that your exact source release, architecture, applications, and hardware are supported. Convert2RHEL is not a universal converter. |
| Rocky Linux | In-place tools may be available for particular major-version transitions; a parallel rebuild is the conservative route. | Community-oriented, CentOS-like operating model. Review the project’s release and EOL commitments and your organization’s support plan. | The project warns that major-version migration tools can lose important data. Test on a clone and maintain a restore path. |
| AlmaLinux | Use the project’s Leapp-based migration tool only for a supported source and target; rebuild when prerequisites are not met. | Community-oriented, CentOS-like administration. Verify target-version support and obtain application-vendor confirmation. | Tool support is version-specific. Do not assume a successful package conversion proves application certification. |
| Oracle Linux | Usually an RPM-compatible migration or rebuild, selected after testing the exact release and kernel choices. | Commercial support and subscription options are available; compare them with your operational and licensing requirements. | Kernel, driver, repository, and vendor-certification differences can affect production workloads. |
| Ubuntu | Normally a parallel rebuild with application installation, data transfer, and a cutover. | Different package, service, security, and support model; choose the support tier that matches your risk. | RPM binary compatibility does not carry over. Plan for package, runtime, filesystem, automation, and application changes. |
| CloudLinux | Assess a supported conversion or rebuild for the hosting workload and its control panel. | Commercial subscription and a hosting-focused operating model. | Confirm control-panel, PHP/runtime, kernel, backup-agent, and application support before committing. |
Red Hat lists RHEL, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, and CloudLinux among possible destinations, but does not promise binary compatibility for every alternative. Treat the table as a shortlist, then validate your own inventory and vendor requirements.
Choose between in-place conversion and a parallel rebuild
In-place conversion
An in-place conversion changes the operating system on the existing host. It can preserve many customizations, local configuration files, and installed services, which may reduce data-copy work. The trade-off is concentrated risk: package replacement changes the running system, requires a reboot into the target kernel, and can leave the host unusable if the process is canceled or fails after replacement begins.

Convert2RHEL supports specific RPM-based source and target combinations. It first analyzes readiness, reports blockers, and then performs package replacement when you proceed. Use it only when your exact CentOS release, architecture, repositories, kernel, storage layout, and application stack meet the documented prerequisites. Analysis mode is a planning tool, not proof that production conversion will succeed.
Parallel rebuild
A parallel rebuild installs the target operating system on a new virtual machine, physical server, or cloud instance. You configure security, repositories, storage, monitoring, and backups; install the applications; copy data; test; and cut over traffic. The old host remains available as a rollback source until acceptance is complete.
Rebuilding usually requires more preparation and may expose undocumented dependencies, but it isolates the new system from the old one. It is the preferred approach when low-level library or filesystem differences block conversion, when the source host is poorly documented, or when you are moving from RPM-based CentOS to Ubuntu or another non-RPM platform.

How much downtime should you plan for?
There is no credible universal “CentOS migration downtime” number. The duration is the result of your workload runbook, not the operating-system name. Estimate it from the following components:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Time to stop applications cleanly and quiesce writes.
- Conversion and reboot time, or installation and configuration time for the replacement host.
- Storage-copy duration, including the final changed-data synchronization.
- Database replication lag, consistency checks, and promotion time.
- Startup, health checks, smoke tests, and user-acceptance validation.
- Time required to restore the former host or revert traffic if acceptance fails.
Measure each component in a staging run that resembles production. Add a contingency for slow storage, repository failures, console access problems, and an additional restore attempt. Publish the result as a maintenance-window estimate for that workload, with a named owner and abort criteria; do not advertise it as an average for all CentOS migrations.
Reducing the cutover window
- Pre-stage the target host and repositories rather than downloading packages during the outage.
- Use database replication or an application-supported synchronization method, then perform only a short final catch-up.
- Copy large static data before the window and validate checksums and permissions afterward.
- Automate service startup and health checks, but retain a human approval gate before redirecting users.
- Define which tests are mandatory and which can be completed after service restoration.
Backup and rollback runbook
Backups are a control against both tool failure and an incorrect application assumption. A snapshot alone is not a backup unless you can restore it; a file copy alone may not preserve database consistency, permissions, SELinux contexts, extended attributes, or service configuration.

- Inventory the source. Record installed packages, enabled repositories, services, configuration files, certificates and keys, scheduled jobs, firewall rules, monitoring and backup agents, users, mounts, filesystems, application dependencies, and license or subscription state. Capture versions and architecture, not just product names.
- Create a recoverable full backup. Include operating-system data, application data, databases, and configuration. Where supported, take a hypervisor or storage snapshot as a second recovery option. Keep recovery media and credentials outside the host being migrated.
- Rehearse restoration. Restore the backup to an isolated system. Boot it, verify that services start, check database integrity, confirm certificates and scheduled jobs, and document the elapsed restore time. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption.
- Run readiness analysis. For Convert2RHEL, run analysis mode first and remediate every blocker you can. Red Hat documents rollback of changes made during analysis mode; that does not make package replacement risk-free.
- Set the abort point. Decide in advance when the team will stop rather than continue troubleshooting inside the outage. Before package replacement or cutover, verify console access, recovery media, administrator credentials, and the tested restore path.
- Keep the old system available. For a rebuild, leave the original host bootable and unchanged. For an in-place conversion, retain a full image or snapshot that can be restored independently. Do not decommission either system until application acceptance passes.
- Validate before declaring success. Check data consistency, permissions, SELinux contexts, service configuration, network paths, monitoring, backups, and representative user transactions. Record who accepted each test.
Red Hat warns that if Convert2RHEL is canceled or fails after package replacement starts, the system can become dysfunctional. Plan for recovery or a rebuild at that point; do not assume rerunning the converter will repair a partially changed host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using Convert2RHEL safely
Convert2RHEL is a supported path only for documented source/version combinations. Before scheduling it, confirm the exact CentOS release, CPU architecture, enabled repositories, kernel and boot configuration, disk layout, third-party packages, and target RHEL entitlement. Remove or resolve unsupported repositories and packages according to the current Red Hat procedure rather than improvising during the outage.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Clone the host or use a staging machine with the same application stack.
- Run Convert2RHEL in analysis mode and save the report.
- Resolve repository, package, driver, filesystem, and application blockers; repeat analysis until the plan is clean.
- Confirm that the full backup, snapshot, console path, and restore rehearsal are available to the operator.
- Schedule the conversion with application owners present. Stop services at the agreed point, start package replacement, and allow the required reboot into the RHEL kernel.
- After reboot, verify repositories, subscriptions, kernel selection, networking, storage mounts, security policy, agents, and application transactions before reopening access.
If the source contains unsupported low-level libraries or filesystem arrangements, forcing conversion can be riskier than rebuilding. Install and configure a new system, then copy data using an application-consistent method.
Best Value
Parallel rebuild procedure
- Build the target. Install the selected release with the required partitioning, encryption, time synchronization, identity integration, and security baseline.
- Recreate operations. Configure repositories, firewall rules, SELinux or the destination security framework, monitoring, logging, backup agents, certificates, scheduled jobs, and secrets management.
- Install and configure applications. Match supported database, runtime, driver, and middleware versions. Recreate service accounts and permissions deliberately instead of copying unknown system state.
- Transfer data. Perform an initial copy before the outage, then a final synchronized copy after writes are stopped. Preserve ownership, modes, extended attributes, and SELinux contexts; validate them on the target.
- Test in isolation. Exercise startup, authentication, integrations, batch jobs, backups, monitoring alerts, failover, and representative transactions. Have the application vendor or owner sign off where certification is required.
- Cut over and observe. Redirect DNS, load-balancer traffic, or service discovery only after the final consistency check. Monitor errors, latency, logs, queues, and resource use for the defined observation period.
- Retain rollback. Keep the old host untouched until the acceptance window closes. If tests fail, redirect traffic back, record the defect, and fix the target without corrupting the known-good source.
Will applications still be supported?
Operating-system similarity does not equal application support. Certification is a vendor decision tied to a major and minor OS release, architecture, kernel, libraries, database, runtime, drivers, and security settings. A workload may run technically while remaining outside the vendor’s support boundary.
Application certification checklist
- Supported operating-system major and minor releases, including the target’s planned maintenance window.
- CPU architecture, kernel, storage and network drivers, filesystems, and multipath or clustering requirements.
- Database, language runtime, web server, middleware, and library versions.
- Licensing, activation, subscription, and hardware-binding behavior after the host or OS changes.
- Monitoring, backup, endpoint-security, vulnerability-scanning, and configuration-management agent support.
- Required security policies, cryptographic libraries, SELinux behavior, FIPS mode, and certificate formats.
- Vendor support statement or certification record for the exact target release, not merely a statement that “Linux” is supported.
Inventory layered dependencies, including agents and drivers that are easy to overlook. Red Hat’s migration guidance highlights application certification because inadequate planning can produce instability, downtime, and security vulnerabilities. Obtain written confirmation for regulated or business-critical workloads and test the complete transaction path, not just whether a process starts.
Common failure modes and the correct response
| Symptom or decision | Likely issue | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Readiness analysis reports blocked packages or repositories. | Unsupported third-party content, mixed repositories, or an unapproved source version. | Remove or replace the blocker according to vendor guidance, rerun analysis, or choose a parallel rebuild. |
| Conversion fails after package replacement begins. | Partial package or boot-state change; the host may be dysfunctional. | Use console and recovery media, restore the tested image, or rebuild. Do not rely on an automatic retry. |
| Application starts but transactions fail. | Runtime, library, permissions, certificate, database, or security-policy difference. | Compare the dependency inventory, logs, contexts, and vendor matrix; keep traffic on the old host until fixed. |
| Data appears present but users see errors. | Incorrect ownership, ACLs, SELinux contexts, mounts, or database consistency. | Run application-level validation and correct metadata; repeat the final synchronized copy if necessary. |
| Rollback is slower than the outage window. | Restore time was never measured or the previous host was decommissioned too early. | Extend the maintenance plan, rehearse restoration, and retain the original bootable system through acceptance. |
A practical decision rule
Choose RHEL with Convert2RHEL when the source and target are explicitly supported, vendor backing matters, and you can tolerate a reboot with a tested recovery plan. Choose Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux when a CentOS-like operating model fits and your application vendors support the exact release; test each project’s migration tooling rather than assuming equivalence. Choose Ubuntu or another non-RPM platform when its ecosystem is a strategic fit and you can fund a rebuild and porting effort. Choose a parallel rebuild whenever low-level incompatibilities, undocumented state, or high rollback risk outweigh the convenience of changing the existing host.
The migration is complete only after the replacement receives updates, backups restore successfully, monitoring is alerting, security controls are active, and application owners accept real transactions. Keep the rollback system until that evidence exists, then retire the unsupported CentOS host under a documented change record.
