Short answer: Caves of Qud: Diaspora is an expansion, not a standalone game. If you do not own Caves of Qud on Steam, buy the base game and the Diaspora DLC together. If you already own the Steam base game, buy Diaspora alone. The announced regular Early Access price is $14.99 USD, but the developers say the final price could stay at $14.99 or rise slightly, so check the live Steam listing before paying.
Diaspora’s announced Early Access launch adds playable animal and plant characters, a new True Kin arcology and castes, spear combat, creatures, items, caravans, mountable saltbacks, and revised world-generation systems. It is intentionally unfinished: Freehold Games and Kitfox Games expect development to last roughly one year, and the Steam Early Access warning says features and content can change.

What Diaspora is—and what it is not
Caves of Qud: Diaspora is downloadable content for the PC version of Caves of Qud sold through Steam. The Steam listing states that the base game is required, so Diaspora cannot be used as an independent game. Buying the DLC without owning the base game leaves you without the required product.

The expansion broadens character creation, exploration, combat, factions and procedural worldbuilding rather than replacing the original campaign. You still launch and play it through the base game. The practical distinction matters when you are deciding between three purchases: the base game alone, the DLC alone for an existing owner, or both products for a new player.

The announced desktop Steam Early Access release date is December 9, 2026. Because that date is still in the future relative to this article’s October 2026 publication date, availability, launch timing and introductory promotions may change. Treat the Steam page as the final authority on whether the build is live and what it costs when you purchase.
What is included at the Early Access launch
The following features are described by the official Steam listing and the publisher’s press materials as part of the current announced Early Access scope. They describe the launch build, not every feature planned for the eventual 1.0 release.
Playable animal and plant stocks
Diaspora lets you select animal and plant stocks in addition to the existing Mutated Human and True Kin genotypes. The Steam listing specifies nine animal stocks and three plant stocks for the Early Access state. These options are intended to change how a character develops and interacts with the world rather than functioning as cosmetic species labels.
Animal and plant choices come with their own mutation possibilities and body-part traits. Examples named in the feature descriptions include claws, a muzzle and a tail. The result is a wider range of starting concepts: a character built around natural anatomy, a traditional mutated human, or a cybernetic True Kin. The exact balance of each stock can change during Early Access.
A new True Kin setting on the Ocean of Iber
True Kin players gain access to a new arcology and its inhabitants on the Ocean of Iber. The four named Great Rondure castes are Propeller, Starsteer, Man of Kelp and Delphine. They provide a new social and geographic context for True Kin characters and expand the setting beyond the locations available in the base game.

The arcology is part of Diaspora’s broader focus on communities that move, trade and develop in spaces above and below the surface. The developers also plan additional arcological and underground locations later in development; those roadmap items should not be confused with every location being available at launch.
New mutations and progression systems
Diaspora adds animal and plant mutations, including traits tied to new body parts. The expansion also introduces additional progression systems. Official descriptions do not present a final, exhaustive list of every mutation, level or balance value, so expect the available combinations and their effects to evolve as updates arrive.
For players who enjoy experimenting with unusual builds, the important change is structural: species choice, anatomy and progression are more closely connected. A plant-based build and an animal-based build are not simply alternate portraits of the same character, and neither replaces the Mutated Human or True Kin routes.
Spear weapon skill tree
A dedicated spear skill tree adds a new way to approach melee encounters. Spears can attack from two tiles away, allowing a character to threaten an adjacent target without occupying the same tile. That extra reach can change positioning, retreat routes and the value of chokepoints.
The skill tree is part of the Early Access launch feature set, but weapon balance and individual abilities may be adjusted. Players should treat two-tile attacks as a defining rule of the spear system, not as a promise that every spear-related ability or final numerical value is fixed.

New creatures, artifacts and cultural encounters
Migrants and artifacts from disparate cultures appear across surface and subterranean habitats. These additions are designed to make travel and discovery less predictable: an encounter can involve a new creature, an unfamiliar object, or a character connected to a culture that was not previously represented in the same way.
Because Caves of Qud uses procedural and systemic interactions, these additions can matter beyond a scripted sequence. Creatures may affect combat and travel, while artifacts can influence equipment choices, trading and exploration. The developers have not published a complete launch catalog, so the store description is the reliable scope statement rather than a promise of a specific item list.
Reworked dromad caravans and mountable saltbacks
Dromad caravans receive a major makeover, and saltbacks become mountable. Caravans are important mobile points of trade and movement, so a redesign can affect how you resupply, meet travelers and plan long journeys. Mountable saltbacks add a transportation option tied directly to the game’s creatures and terrain.
The announcement does not establish a universal speed value, carrying capacity or availability rate for saltback mounts. Those details may differ by build. What is confirmed is the new interaction: saltbacks can be mounted in the Early Access content.
More sophisticated roads and rivers
New worldbuilding algorithms generate more sophisticated networks of roads and rivers. This is a systemic change rather than a single map area. Roads can influence how settlements and travelers connect, while rivers can shape routes, barriers and the way regions are discovered.

Procedural generation means no two worlds should be assumed to use an identical layout. The algorithms are intended to create richer networks, but the developers have not guaranteed a particular map pattern, route length or frequency of water features.
Interface and performance work
The Steam FAQ lists numerous user-interface and performance improvements for the Early Access version. These are supporting changes rather than a separate campaign, but they matter in a game with dense inventories, many status effects and complex interactions. As with other Early Access systems, the exact behavior and presentation can change through patches.
What is planned after launch
Freehold Games and Kitfox Games describe Diaspora as a multi-stage Early Access project. The roadmap is a development plan, not a guarantee that every item will arrive on a particular date or in exactly the announced form.
Questlines and dynamic content
- A multi-step migrant questline involving Je’ome the Bounty.
- A larger Diaspora questline that expands the expansion’s central themes.
- Dynamic quests that respond to the world rather than following only fixed scripts.
- New humanoid species and factions, including Foxen and Snailfolk factions.
New places and ways to travel
- Underground villages.
- Large multi-zone dungeons or arcological spaces.
- Roaming or seasonal mega-caravans.
- Additional elaboration of dromad caravans.
More characters, systems and hazards
- Additional playable animal and plant stocks.
- More mutations and cybernetic implants.
- New creatures, skills, equipment and item modifications.
- More biomes, ingredients, diseases and fungal infections.
- New music and other audiovisual additions.
The official FAQ summarizes the plan this way: “The full version will expand the Early Access features and add several new feature arcs.” It also estimates the project at “roughly, though — on the order of one year.” Neither statement is a fixed release guarantee. Updates can reorder, revise or remove roadmap items.
How the purchase choices compare
| Your situation | What to buy | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You do not own Caves of Qud and want Diaspora | Base game plus Diaspora DLC on Steam | The DLC requires the base game. |
| You already own the Steam base game | Diaspora DLC only | You already have the required product. |
| You want only the original game | Caves of Qud alone | Diaspora is optional downloadable content. |
| You prefer finished, stable content | Wait for the full expansion | Early Access is incomplete and subject to change. |
For a new player who specifically wants the Diaspora features, the correct transaction is not a standalone “Diaspora edition.” It is the Steam base game together with the DLC. For an existing Steam owner, purchasing the DLC alone avoids paying for the base game twice.

Price, timing and Early Access risk
The announced regular Early Access price is $14.99 USD. Freehold Games and Kitfox Games say the final price may remain $14.99 or increase slightly, so the amount should be checked on the live Steam page at checkout. The figure is a regular announced price, not a promise about a temporary launch discount, regional pricing or taxes.
Early Access is aimed at players who are comfortable with an unfinished expansion and frequent updates. The Steam warning explains that Early Access titles are incomplete and may change. The developers’ own description is direct: “Expect some instability, but also a lot of vitality.” That can mean balance changes, interface revisions, bugs, altered quests or roadmap adjustments while you are playing.
Buying during Early Access therefore trades completeness for earlier access to new systems. You can play the announced launch features sooner and observe the expansion’s development, but you should not buy on the assumption that every planned faction, dungeon, disease, questline or playable stock is already present.

- Check ownership. Open your Steam library and confirm whether Caves of Qud is already attached to your account. If it is not, add the base game before purchasing Diaspora.
- Verify the release state. The announced desktop release date is December 9, 2026. If you are checking before that date, the DLC may not yet be playable even if its store page is visible.
- Read the current feature description. Confirm that the launch features you want—animal or plant stocks, the Ocean of Iber arcology, spear skills, caravans or saltback mounts—are listed on the live page.
- Confirm the current price. Use the checkout total for your region; $14.99 USD is the announced regular Early Access price and may not include local taxes or reflect a promotion.
- Decide whether unfinished content suits you. If changes and instability would spoil the experience, wait for the full version rather than buying solely for roadmap promises.
Who should buy now and who should wait
Buy during Early Access if you want experimentation
Early access makes the most sense for players who enjoy trying unusual builds, learning systems as they develop and receiving updates over time. The animal and plant stocks, new mutations, two-tile spear attacks and revised caravans provide immediately understandable reasons to start a new run. You should also be comfortable with saves, balance and quest behavior changing between updates.
Wait if you want a settled campaign
Waiting is the safer choice if your priority is a complete quest structure, stable balance and a known final set of factions and locations. The announced roadmap includes substantial additions—dynamic quests, underground villages, mega-dungeons, roaming caravans, new species and infections—so the eventual full version is intended to be broader than the Early Access launch.
Buy only the base game if Diaspora’s features do not matter
The original game remains the correct purchase for someone who wants the core Caves of Qud experience without expansion content. Diaspora is optional; owning it is not required to play the base game.
Bottom line
For a newcomer who wants the expansion, purchase the Steam base game and Diaspora together. For an existing Steam owner, purchase Diaspora alone. At the announced $14.99 USD Early Access price, the DLC offers nine animal stocks, three plant stocks, a new True Kin arcology and castes, new mutations, spear reach combat, creatures, artifacts, caravans, saltback mounts and improved world generation. Choose Early Access only if you accept an incomplete, changing product; otherwise, wait for the finished expansion and recheck the live Steam listing for the final price and availability.
