For a new Ethernet run that needs 10 Gb/s (10GBASE-T) and could approach 100 m (328 ft), choose Cat6A. Cat6 is suitable for Gigabit Ethernet to 100 m and can carry 10GBASE-T over shorter distances, but its practical reach depends on interference from nearby cables. Choose based on the required speed and the complete installed channel—not the cable label alone.
Cat6 vs. Cat6A at a glance
| Use case | Cat6 | Cat6A |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Gb/s (1000BASE-T) | Up to 100 m (328 ft), according to ICC’s comparison. ICC | Up to 100 m (328 ft), according to ICC’s comparison. ICC |
| 10 Gb/s (10GBASE-T) | For shorter runs: ICC cites operation up to 37 m, with 37–55 m depending on alien-crosstalk conditions. ICC | Up to 100 m (328 ft) for the complete channel, according to ICC and CommScope. ICC CommScope |

How to choose for your run
Choose Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet
If the link needs 1 Gb/s and the channel is no longer than 100 m, Cat6 is a reasonable choice. ICC lists that distance for 1000BASE-T over Cat6. The same source lists 100 m for Cat6A, so moving up a category does not extend the cited Gigabit channel distance.

Choose Cat6A for 10 Gb/s over a long distance
For a new 10GBASE-T channel that may exceed Cat6’s shorter cited reach—or may approach 100 m—specify Cat6A. CommScope describes Cat6A as supporting 10GBASE-T across the full 100 m channel length. That makes it the more straightforward choice when dependable 10 Gb/s across a long run is the requirement.

Evaluate existing Cat6 by its actual conditions
Cat6 can support 10GBASE-T over shorter runs, but do not assume it will deliver 10 Gb/s at 100 m. ICC cites up to 37 m and a 37–55 m range depending on alien crosstalk. Those figures do not establish a universal safe distance for every installation; assess the required rate, channel length and cable environment.
Why cable bundles affect Cat6 10 Gb/s reach
Alien crosstalk is interference from neighboring cable channels. A run surrounded by other cables, such as in a dense bundle or pathway, can face different conditions from a more isolated run. BICSI notes that outcomes depend on the components and installation practices. It describes mitigation practices including separating equipment and patch cords and unbundling horizontal cable. These steps do not turn Cat6 into a guarantee for 10GBASE-T at 100 m.

HPE Aruba Networking also discusses Cat6A for 10G to 100 m and recommends shielded cable in the context of its transceiver guidance. That is product-context-specific advice, not a universal requirement for every Ethernet installation. Follow the documentation for the equipment and cabling you are using.

A channel is more than the cable printed on the spool: jacks, patch panels, patch cords, cable construction and installation all contribute to the result. For a new Cat6A run intended for 10GBASE-T, make sure the components and installation are appropriate for that channel. For an existing run, category markings alone do not prove that it meets the performance needed for a particular link. A continuity check confirms basic connection, not category-level channel performance; use appropriate channel testing when verification matters.

- Check the required Ethernet rate and the total end-to-end channel length.
- Consider whether the run passes through dense bundles or pathways where neighboring-cable interference may matter.
- For a new run, specify compatible cable and channel components together.
- For installation details such as jacket rating, conductor gauge, bend radius, pathway fill, power-over-Ethernet thermal design and local code, consult product documentation and applicable rules. The cited reach guidance does not settle those project-specific requirements.
What to do if a Cat6 run is already installed
If an existing Cat6 channel needs 10 Gb/s, first compare its total length and installation conditions with ICC’s shorter-run guidance. If it is beyond the stated Cat6 reach or sits in a dense bundle, do not promise 10 Gb/s based on the Cat6 marking alone. Assess the installed channel and use appropriate testing; if dependable 10GBASE-T over a long distance is required, consider replacing it with a properly specified Cat6A channel.
