Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your Castr YouTube stream has audio but a black picture, set the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and its keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Then check Castr’s incoming-source preview and confirm the encoder is sending both audio and video. For an uploaded source, verify that it is an MP4; Castr’s upload guide says it supports MP4 files only.
Find where the picture disappears
- Open the Castr live dashboard and inspect the incoming-source preview. Castr describes this preview as showing the incoming source. If it is black there, start with the encoder output or source file.
- Check the stream statistics. Review video bitrate, resolution, codecs, and audio bitrate. These can help establish whether video is reaching Castr and what formats it reports.
- Compare the preview with YouTube. If the source preview shows video but YouTube does not, investigate the outgoing signal and confirm that both audio and video tracks are being sent. This comparison helps narrow down where the picture is lost, but the preview is not guaranteed to identify every fault.
Castr documents the preview and live statistics in its live-stream setup guide.

Fix a black screen with audio
Castr’s March 18, 2026 troubleshooting guidance associates a black screen with audio with an incompatible video format. Change the encoder’s video codec to H.264 (AVC) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. These are the direct, symptom-specific fixes; changing bitrate alone is not the first step for this codec-related symptom.
Look for the video codec and keyframe interval in the output or streaming settings for your encoder. Save the changes, reconnect or restart the stream as needed by your encoder, and check both the Castr preview and YouTube output again. The exact menu names vary by encoder, so use its output settings rather than assuming one universal UI path.

Check an uploaded video file
If Castr is streaming a prerecorded file, first confirm that the file is MP4. Castr’s video upload guide says the service supports MP4 files only. An .mp4 filename or container does not by itself confirm that the video inside uses a compatible codec; if the file preview is black, check the encoder or file’s video format as well. Castr’s cited upload guide does not specify a complete transcoding recipe for every file.
For a file upload, Castr says direct uploads are not resumable and recommends direct local upload for files under 5 GB. The guide says uploads above 5 GB should use a multipart-upload feature described there as coming soon. Those upload-process details are not established causes of a black screen, but they matter if you are diagnosing an incomplete or failed upload.

Use bitrate and resolution guidance as supporting checks
Once codec, keyframes, and tracks are correct, use Castr’s general encoder guidance to review stream stability. The figures below are recommendations from two separate Castr pages, not a single guaranteed profile or a guaranteed black-screen fix.
| Setting | Castr troubleshooting page | Castr encoder configuration guide |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 (AVC) | H.264 |
| Audio codec | AAC | AAC or MP3 |
| Bitrate mode | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | 2 seconds; not over 4 seconds |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1920×1080 or 1280×720; 30 fps, or 60 fps if the connection supports the higher bitrate | Bitrate ranges are specified for 1080p and 720p at 30 and 60 fps |
| Video bitrate | 1080p: 3,500–6,500 Kbps; 720p: 2,500–4,000 Kbps | 1080p at 60 fps: 4,500–9,000 Kbps; 1080p at 30 fps: 3,000–6,000 Kbps; 720p at 60 fps: 2,250–6,000 Kbps; 720p at 30 fps: 1,500–4,000 Kbps |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps stereo | 128 Kbps preferred; not above 256 Kbps |
The recommendations differ, particularly for 1080p video bitrate. Follow the page most relevant to your configuration and avoid treating the ranges as interchangeable guarantees. Castr’s separate encoder configuration guide lists the frame-rate-specific ranges; its troubleshooting page lists the other general values.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- Black picture with audio in Castr’s source preview: Check the source file or encoder’s video output. Set H.264 and a 2-second keyframe interval, then confirm that the source includes video.
- Picture in Castr, but black on YouTube: Confirm that the outgoing stream contains both audio and video tracks. Use the dashboard’s reported codecs and bitrates to help locate the discrepancy.
- Uploaded file will not show video: Confirm the upload is MP4, then check the video codec inside the file; the extension alone does not establish codec compatibility.
- Video stutters or appears unstable after the format checks: Review CBR, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate against Castr’s guidance. Higher frame rates require a higher bitrate, and Castr advises using 60 fps when the connection supports it.
- Settings look right, but the problem persists: Check Castr’s service status. Its page was last updated October 2, 2026 at 4:26 pm UTC and showed all services online then; that snapshot does not establish service or destination status at another time.
