How Much Data Does a 24/7 Church YouTube Stream Use When Looping Sermons?

A continuous church stream at YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest rates uses an estimated 64.8 GB/day at 720p30 or 108 GB/day at 1080p30—encoder upload, not viewer data.

A 24/7 church YouTube stream uses about 64.8 GB of outbound data per day at 6 Mbps or 108 GB per day at 10 Mbps, before protocol overhead. Those are calculated estimates for the church’s encoder sending continuously to YouTube—not totals for viewers watching the stream. YouTube recommends those bitrates for H.264 live ingest at 720p30 and 1080p30, respectively. YouTube’s live encoder settings are recommendations, not a measurement of a particular church’s actual stream.

Daily and monthly data estimates

For a sustained live-stream bitrate, estimate outbound data with this formula:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = decimal GB per 24 hours

The result is the amount the church’s encoder sends upstream to YouTube, assuming an uninterrupted stream at the stated bitrate. The monthly estimates below assume a 30-day month.

H.264 live ingest setting Recommended bitrate Estimated encoder data per day Estimated encoder data per 30-day month
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 64.8 GB 1.944 TB
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 108 GB 3.24 TB

YouTube lists 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 live ingestion. The data totals are calculations from those recommended rates, not figures published by YouTube or measurements of an individual stream. They use decimal units: 1 GB equals 1,000,000,000 bytes and 1 TB equals 1,000 GB.

Why looping a sermon still uses continuous data

When a recorded sermon is played into a live encoder, the encoder continually sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. Looping the same recording does not make the live-stream connection a one-time transfer equal to the sermon file’s size. The source file’s size can help estimate an initial upload, but it does not tell you the encoder’s ongoing outbound data while the channel stays live.

This estimate applies to a continuous live ingest workflow. Uploading sermons as ordinary on-demand videos and arranging them in a playlist is a different workflow; the live-ingest figures above do not describe that use.

Encoder upload is not viewer data

The 64.8 GB and 108 GB daily estimates describe one church encoder’s outbound traffic. They do not mean each viewer uses that much data. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple playback formats, so a viewer’s data depends on the format delivered and how long that person watches. Without those details, viewer consumption cannot be calculated from the church’s ingest bitrate alone.

Check whether your internet connection can sustain the stream

Data volume and upload speed are related but different planning questions. A stream at a given bitrate must have enough sustained upload capacity to reach YouTube reliably. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. For a single stream at the example rates, plan for about 7.2 Mbps of available upload at 6 Mbps, or 12 Mbps at 10 Mbps. Include other simultaneous streams and household or church network traffic in the total.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

YouTube recommends Ethernet for live streaming from a computer. A wired connection can help with reliability, but it does not lower the encoder bitrate or the corresponding data total. Test the setup and monitor stream health before relying on it for a continuous service.

Ways to keep a sermon stream running

For a do-it-yourself setup, a computer or other encoder must keep sending the live feed for as long as the channel is live. Choose an ingest bitrate based on the intended resolution and frame rate, check that sustained upload capacity has headroom, and use a reliable network connection. At the cited YouTube recommendations, the 720p30 and 1080p30 examples above provide a basis for estimating the encoder’s data use.
