If your Castr stream reaches YouTube without audible sound, check the encoder’s audio source and active track first. Then check the encoded audio settings, any selected Castr transcoder track, and finally YouTube playback in a private or unlisted test. Comparing sound at each point helps locate where it disappears.
1. Check that the encoder is capturing audio
Start at the source rather than changing YouTube settings. Castr forwards the audio it receives, so a disabled, inactive, or incorrect encoder input can leave the stream silent.

In OBS
- Open Settings → Audio.
- Enable at least one relevant audio device. Castr gives Desktop Audio and Mic/Auxiliary Audio as examples.
- Confirm the intended source is active and that OBS is receiving it. Speak, play audio, or otherwise produce sound at the source and watch the relevant OBS audio meter.
- If the meter does not respond, check that the correct device is selected and available to the computer, and that the source is not muted. Test again before changing Castr or YouTube settings.
Castr’s audio requirements guide notes that a social platform may reject a stream with no audio track or show an error. An enabled track containing silence may satisfy a track requirement, but it does not make speech or music audible.
For a video-only source
If a camera or other source has no microphone and the audience does not need to hear program audio, Castr suggests adding a silent AAC audio track for platform compatibility. If viewers must hear speech or music, a silent track is not a fix: add a real audio source or relay the video through an encoder that can provide one.

2. Check the encoded audio format and levels
Once the encoder is receiving the intended sound, inspect its outgoing audio settings. Castr’s guidance varies by workflow, so treat these as recommendations from the cited guides rather than a guarantee that one combination suits every source.
| Setting | Castr guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Format or codec | AAC or MP3 in Castr’s general encoder configurations guidance; AAC-LC in its social-platform guide. | Choose a format supported by your encoder workflow and test the actual destination. |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps is Castr’s preferred or recommended setting in those guides. | Check that audio is enabled and encoded at the selected bitrate; video bitrate alone does not confirm audio is being sent. |
| Sample rate and channels | The social-platform guide recommends 48 kHz and stereo. Castr’s separate recorded-video settings guide recommends 44.1 kHz for YouTube/Facebook prerecorded video. | Use the recommendation relevant to your stream type. Castr’s guides do not establish one best sample rate for every live setup. |
After changing a setting, make a short test rather than waiting for a scheduled broadcast to find out whether audio reaches the destination. Castr’s encoder guidance also recommends testing before an event.

3. Check Castr’s preview and any transcoder track selection
- Start the encoder and, if needed, toggle destination platforms off while checking the Castr preview and input health.
- If the Castr preview is already silent, focus on the encoder’s capture, outgoing audio, and track routing.
- If you use Castr transcoding, verify that the selected or filtered audio track contains the sound you intend to send. Castr warns that selecting a track without audio makes the transcoder’s outgoing stream silent.
See Castr’s instructions for transcoding a stream. A healthy-looking video feed does not establish that the audio track is present or usable.

4. Test YouTube separately from Castr
Once sound is present in the Castr preview, test the YouTube destination in a private or unlisted stream and listen to its playback. Castr’s stream testing guide recommends testing the actual destination before broadcasting. Its YouTube connection guide describes connecting through the YouTube API or a YouTube streaming server/key.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
- Castr preview is silent: return to encoder capture, output settings, and track routing.
- Castr preview has sound, but YouTube playback does not: review the destination connection and repeat the private or unlisted test. This comparison narrows where to investigate but does not, by itself, prove a specific cause.
- Both have sound in testing: monitor the actual broadcast’s audio health and playback; a test does not guarantee every later source or event will behave identically.
Castr’s stream-quality troubleshooting guide recommends checking stream-health charts, including audio bitrate. Destinations may reject streams that lack audio or video tracks, so stable video alone is not proof that YouTube is receiving usable audio. If the destination reports an error, check YouTube Studio’s current diagnostics as well; destination behavior can change.
5. Choose the right fix for the source and destination
- YouTube stream from a video-only camera: add a silent audio track only if viewers do not need audible program content. For audible content, supply a real audio input or use an encoder that can combine the sources.
- Audio-only programming for YouTube: Castr says to combine the audio with a visual element, such as a static image, looping video, or visualizer, through an encoder.
- Audio-only or video-only stream for web playback: Castr says its embed player can handle both, with limitations that differ from social platforms. Do not assume a result in the embed player establishes what YouTube will accept.
The key distinction is whether the audience needs real audio and whether the destination is YouTube or Castr’s embed player; a silent compatibility track is not a substitute for the sound the audience expects.
