The VPS—not YouTube—controls the playlist. YouTube receives the encoder’s live feed and hosts the viewer-facing broadcast. Before choosing this do-it-yourself setup, calculate the server’s sustained encoding capacity and monthly outbound data: those costs can outweigh the VPS headline price.

Understand the three parts of the system
Google Drive stores the source files
Drive is the source library. The VPS needs permission to access the intended files and should download each video to local storage before playback. A Drive folder is not itself a livestream playlist, and a VPS should not depend on Drive delivering each video continuously while it is on air.
The VPS synchronizes files and rotates playback
A sync process discovers the intended videos, downloads them, and prepares a deterministic play order. An encoder running on the VPS reads the prepared local playlist and sends audio and video to YouTube. Playlist rotation therefore belongs on the VPS.

YouTube separates the broadcast from the incoming stream
In YouTube’s Live Streaming API model, a liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch, while a liveStream is the incoming audio-video feed from the encoder. You can use YouTube Studio for the broadcast and stream setup, while the VPS handles playback. API automation is optional; it can create, bind, schedule, and update broadcast resources but does not turn Drive into a playlist player. The YouTube guide’s resource model allows up to three broadcasts to be bound to one stream resource.
Plan the VPS before paying for a low-cost plan
Estimate outbound transfer
At a steady video bitrate of B megabits per second, a direct upload transfers approximately B × 10.8 decimal gigabytes per day before protocol overhead. This is a calculation, not a provider-published allowance. For example, at 4 Mbps the estimate is 43.2 GB per day, or about 1,296 GB over 30 days if the stream runs continuously. Add protocol overhead and any other server traffic, then compare your estimate with included outbound data and the provider’s overage rate.

Check sustained encoding capacity
Do not assume a small VPS can encode a particular resolution just because it can transmit a stream. Capacity depends on the input files, whether the encoder copies compatible streams or decodes and re-encodes them, the chosen output settings, CPU architecture, sustained CPU allocation, and any hardware encoding available. A VPS plan’s advertised processor count alone does not establish what it can handle continuously. Validate the workload using your own representative clips before relying on unattended operation.

Compare the total operating cost
- Monthly server price: compare the full recurring charge, not only a promotional first term.
- Network route and region: check the India-region location and the route to the YouTube ingest server selected for your channel; a nearby VPS does not guarantee a particular ingest path or stream health.
- Outbound data: check the included transfer allowance, how the provider counts it, and overage charges.
- Compute and storage: account for sustained CPU capacity, RAM, local disk, and whether disk contents persist through restarts or plan changes.
- Operations: consider backups, provider support, monitoring, and the time needed to restore the sync process or encoder.
No current Indian VPS provider price or plan figure is established here. Check the provider’s current regional plan and terms directly rather than treating “low-cost” as a guarantee of low total cost.

Prepare YouTube and the VPS
Create the YouTube event and find the ingest settings
- In YouTube Studio, open the channel’s live control room and create or select the broadcast you intend to keep running. Configure its title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate for your channel.
- Use the stream settings shown in the live control room to identify the ingestion protocol, server address, and stream key. Follow the current values and instructions shown for your account; there is no one universal ingest address or protocol that this setup should assume.
- Keep the broadcast configuration separate from the VPS playlist. The broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the encoder sends its feed to the stream associated with that event.
- Store the stream key in a protected server-side secret or restricted configuration file. Do not put it in a public script, shared Drive file, screenshot, or log.
YouTube supports protocols including RTMP and HLS. For a basic VPS encoder, use the protocol and settings displayed in the channel’s live control room and current YouTube guidance. HLS ingestion has additional requirements for HTTPS, media playlists, segments, media format, and filenames. An HLS media playlist sent to YouTube is not the same thing as your source playlist of videos stored in Drive.
Authorize Drive access with limited permissions
- Use an OAuth authorization flow for the VPS-side sync process with a Drive scope that permits reading the intended media. Choose the least-privilege scope that works for your implementation.
- Confirm that each file is available to the account used by the sync process and that its Drive capability allows downloading. Drive’s API documents binary-file retrieval through
files.getwithalt=media; supported files may also use the long-runningfiles.downloadroute. - Download actual video files. Google Workspace documents such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides are not ordinary video blobs; use their separate export methods if they are part of your workflow, and account for export format and size constraints.
- Protect OAuth refresh credentials as carefully as the YouTube stream key. Restrict access to the credentials, avoid printing them in logs, and have a recovery plan if access is revoked or credentials expire.
Build a rotation that can recover from interruptions
The following is recommended implementation guidance, not a tested deployment recipe. The goal is to avoid making the encoder rely on a live Drive download at the moment each clip is due to play.

- Choose and order the source files. Enumerate only the intended folder’s video files. Preserve a predictable order in a manifest—for example, a maintained list of file identifiers and their intended sequence—instead of relying on incidental folder listing order.
- Stage downloads ahead of playback. Download new or changed files to a staging location before they are due. Confirm each transfer completed successfully and that the resulting local file can be read before adding it to the prepared playlist.
- Validate media compatibility. Compare the files’ codecs, frame sizes, frame rates, time bases, and audio layouts. Depending on the playback method, heterogeneous clips may need normalization or decoding and re-encoding. Do not assume that a list of filenames will make incompatible files concatenate cleanly.
- Let the encoder read prepared local files. Configure the encoder or playlist process to use the local prepared sequence, repeat it as needed, and send the feed using the current YouTube ingest settings. Test the chosen playback method with representative clips, including the transitions between unlike files.
- Update at a controlled boundary. Write the revised manifest and stage added files separately. Switch to the new prepared sequence at a deliberate playlist boundary rather than rewriting files the encoder may currently be reading.
- Monitor and recover. Record sync errors and encoder exit status without logging credentials. Configure a process supervisor or equivalent restart policy, alert on repeated failures, and inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback during validation and operation.
A single encoder configuration can serve recurring events with separate YouTube broadcast resources bound to its stream, according to the Live Streaming API guide. A distinct stream resource per show is also an option when shows need different settings. If you automate event creation, set up a Google Cloud project and API access, and authorize Data API calls through the Google account that owns the broadcasting channel. Keep event metadata and scheduling in that control plane; keep media rotation in the VPS encoder.
Respect Drive and YouTube rules
Broadcast only media you are authorized to use
Use only videos for which the channel owner has the rights needed to broadcast. Google’s Drive API Terms of Service prohibit using Drive for “Broad video distribution or dissemination of copyrighted content without authorization” and say: “Using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN) is not allowed.” Downloading an owner’s working files to one VPS for that owner’s authorized stream is different in purpose and scale from operating a public distribution service, but evaluate your own use against Google’s current terms.

Streaming successfully does not settle monetization eligibility
Technical ability to run a continuous stream is separate from whether a channel or its content qualifies for monetization. Do not assume that looping content is automatically allowed or monetizable; check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and other applicable rules for your channel and content.
