Castlevania has a long-running classic continuity and a separate Lords of Shadow reboot branch, so there is no single play order that fits every game.
Castlevania at a glance
Castlevania began as horror-themed action built around fixed stages, enemy patterns, timed jumps and the Vampire Killer whip. Later games replaced discrete stages with interconnected maps, character levels, equipment, hidden routes and repeated exploration. The series therefore contains several distinct play styles rather than one consistent formula.

Which games belong to the classic continuity?
There is no single current Konami page that supplies an exhaustive, uncontested canon chart for every release. The route below is a practical classic-continuity reading order commonly used by fans and timeline references. Treat it as a guide to story eras, not as a definitive publisher-issued decree. Individual placements and spin-off relationships remain disputed.
#1 Best Overall
- LIMITED EDITION: Official Limited Run Games release #251 of the Castlevania Dominus Collection featuring Order of Ecclesia cover art for Nintendo Switch
- GAME FORMAT: Physical DVD-ROM release, not a digital download, packaged in standard Nintendo Switch game case
- CONTENT: Action-packed collection of classic Castlevania games, rated T for Teen by ESRB
- PACKAGING DIMENSIONS: Comes in standard Switch case measuring 6 inches high, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches deep
- REGION AND LANGUAGE: US release with English language support, compatible with Nintendo Switch systems
1. Lament of Innocence: the origin-era setup
Begin here if you want an origin-era Belmont story. It is set before the better-known cycle of recurring castle assaults and provides a foundation for the mythology surrounding the Belmont line and Dracula.
2. Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and the early Belmont era
Castlevania III is an early historical chapter in the classic route, with branching stages and multiple playable allies. Its events lead into the broader early Belmont-era material.
3. Curse of Darkness, The Adventure, Belmont’s Revenge, Castlevania and Simon’s Quest
This cluster covers several generations of vampire hunters and the original NES-era conflict. Curse of Darkness expands the world around the events associated with Castlevania III. The Game Boy games The Adventure and Belmont’s Revenge follow another Belmont period, while the original Castlevania and Simon’s Quest form the familiar Simon-led era.

4. Harmony of Dissonance, Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night
Harmony of Dissonance belongs to the later classic-era stories. Rondo of Blood sets up the events that make Symphony of the Night such an important sequel. Playing those two together gives the clearest narrative bridge from a traditional stage game to the exploration format.
5. Bloodlines, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia
These games move the classic route through different protagonists and locations rather than following only one Belmont. They are useful as a group because they show how the series broadened its cast and setting while retaining 2D combat and exploration.
6. Aria of Sorrow followed by Dawn of Sorrow
Konami’s official Aria of Sorrow description gives this arc a firm date: the story takes place in 2035, when Soma Cruz experiences the first solar eclipse of the 21st century and awakens in a mysterious castle. Dawn of Sorrow continues Soma’s future-facing storyline. This pair is the clearest endpoint of the commonly used classic chronology.

How the Lords of Shadow branch fits
Do not insert Lords of Shadow into the classic timeline. Konami’s synopsis identifies Gabriel Belmont as a holy knight of the Brotherhood of Light and presents the game as a rebooted action-adventure continuity.
- Lords of Shadow: Gabriel’s story and the foundation of the reboot branch.
- Mirror of Fate: starts 57 years after the first game and follows Gabriel’s descendants Trevor and Simon.
- Lords of Shadow 2: presents Gabriel as Dracula in a modern-time story.
This order is self-contained. You do not need knowledge of the NES, 16-bit or handheld games to understand the branch, and playing the classic titles first will not resolve its reboot-specific changes.
Why Castlevania can feel difficult
Difficulty depends more on the game’s design era than on a universal series ranking. No official publisher-wide numeric difficulty list exists, so comparisons are most useful when they identify the systems creating the friction.
| Format | Main sources of difficulty | What helps the player |
|---|---|---|
| Classic stage-based games on NES, Game Boy, Super NES and Genesis | Demanding jumps, enemy patterns, limited recovery, fixed stages and checkpoint pressure. | Learning enemy timing, memorizing safe positions and practicing repeatable routes. |
| Exploration/RPG games such as Symphony of the Night, GBA and DS entries | Boss patterns, late-game checks, hidden routes and the need to understand the map. | Leveling, equipment, alternate paths and the ability to revisit areas and improve your build. |
| Lords of Shadow | Camera-based 3D encounters, modern action timing and larger cinematic set pieces. | A contemporary combat system and a story-driven progression structure rather than fixed 2D stages. |
What makes the early games demanding
In the earliest games, a missed jump or an enemy hit can cost substantial progress because recovery options are limited. Enemies are often positioned to test a specific jump or attack rhythm, so success comes from recognizing patterns rather than improvising every encounter. Checkpoints reduce the amount of replaying but do not remove the pressure of reaching them.
Why exploration games are more forgiving
Map-based games let you gain levels, change equipment, discover stronger abilities and return to earlier rooms. A difficult boss can therefore become manageable through preparation instead of only mechanical execution. That flexibility does not make every fight easy: optional areas, late bosses and completion requirements can still demand precision.

Lords of Shadow replaces fixed-screen spacing with camera-based movement and cinematic encounters. Its challenges are therefore closer to modern 3D action-adventure design than to the pattern memorization of the NES games.

The best Castlevania game to start with
Choose Symphony of the Night for exploration and RPG progression
This is the strongest entry point if you want interconnected rooms, backtracking, equipment, character growth and secrets. It demonstrates the formula later widely called “Metroidvania” without requiring you to learn the older games first. The original release was in 1997 for PlayStation/Saturn, and the game is also included in the Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood package.
Expect a slower, more exploratory rhythm than the stage-based titles. You will revisit rooms after gaining abilities, compare equipment and use the map to decide where to investigate next.
Choose Castlevania Anniversary Collection for classic whip-action
Start here if you want the format that defined the first generation: discrete stages, a fixed route, a limited set of weapons and enemies whose patterns reward practice. It is also a useful historical sampler rather than a single-game commitment. Konami lists the collection for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam and Epic; check the current edition and regional storefront before buying.
Choose Lords of Shadow for cinematic 3D action
This is the appropriate first game if your priority is a modern 3D presentation, story-led progression and large action set pieces. Continue with Mirror of Fate and then Lords of Shadow 2 to follow the reboot branch in its stated internal order.

A decision guide for your first three games
- Want the least friction and the most freedom? Start with Symphony of the Night, then try the GBA-era games through Advance Collection.
- Want to understand the original challenge? Start with Anniversary Collection. Begin with Castlevania or Super Castlevania IV, then sample Castlevania III and Bloodlines.
- Want a self-contained modern reboot? Play Lords of Shadow, Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 consecutively.
- Want the story’s future era? Play Aria of Sorrow before Dawn of Sorrow; their protagonist and 2035 setting make them a natural pair.
- Want the broadest historical survey? Use Anniversary Collection for the early years, Requiem for the Rondo/Symphony transition, Advance Collection for GBA and Dominus Collection for DS.
What changed in 2026?
Konami’s September 25, 2026 anniversary announcement describes Castlevania as a 40-year-old series, mentions temporary collection discounts and anniversary merchandise, and announces Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse for October 15, 2026. The announcement names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch.
The announcement describes Belmont’s Curse as taking place in 1499 Paris, 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, with Rose Belmont using the Vampire Killer. Because release timing, editions and storefront listings can vary by region, confirm the live listing for your platform before assuming the game is available or that its final content matches the announcement.

Frequently asked questions
Are all Castlevania games canon?
No single current official chart settles every game’s status and placement. Use the classic route as a practical continuity guide, while treating Lords of Shadow as a separate reboot branch and recognizing that some spin-offs and chronology details are disputed.
Should I play by release order or story order?
Release order is best for seeing how the mechanics evolve. The practical classic chronology is better when your priority is the historical story, provided you accept that it is a commonly used ordering rather than an exhaustive official canon list.
Is Symphony of the Night a remake of an earlier game?
No. It is a 1997 landmark entry that follows the Rondo-era material and establishes the interconnected exploration style associated with the later RPG-focused games.
Do I need to play Castlevania III before Mirror of Fate?
No. Mirror of Fate belongs to the Lords of Shadow reboot branch. Its relevant prerequisite is the first Lords of Shadow, not the classic-continuity Castlevania III.
Which collection is best for handheld-era games?
Use Advance Collection for the GBA-era exploration games and Dominus Collection for the later DS-era group. They represent different periods, so one does not replace the other.
Can a beginner handle the original NES game?
Yes, but expect a pattern-driven challenge with demanding jumps, limited recovery and checkpoint pressure. If that sounds punitive, start with an exploration game where leveling, equipment and backtracking provide more recovery options.
