Carefree Shoppers Spend More Beyond Retail Discount Thresholds, Study Finds

Durham University reports that shoppers it describes as “carefree” tended to spend farther above the minimum required for a retail discount than “cautious” shoppers. That extra spending may increase retailers’ profits, but the effect varied by product category. The finding is about spending after shoppers encounter a threshold—not proof that carefree shoppers generally receive more discount codes.

What the study calls a minimum-purchase discount

A minimum-purchase promotion unlocks a discount when a shopper meets a spending or quantity threshold. Examples include “3 for 2” and “save £10 when you spend £50.” These offers can encourage shoppers to add items or choose more expensive products to qualify.

Durham University’s 5 October 2026 release says the researchers analysed data from a leading UK supermarket chain covering a range of fast-moving consumer products. The university does not name the chain or give the dataset size.

How cautious and carefree shoppers responded

The release describes cautious shoppers as tending to spend only slightly above a qualifying threshold. Shoppers in the “carefree” group often spent significantly more beyond it. Durham says that additional spending can mean greater profits for retailers, and suggests customer-behaviour data could help retailers tailor offers.

  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

“Cautious” and “carefree” are the release’s labels for broad groups in the analysis. They should not be read as diagnoses, permanent personality types, or evidence that retailers can reliably identify how any particular person will respond.

Why the product category mattered

Durham reports different responses across product categories. Its examples divide into two broad types:

Rank #2
Amazon eGift Card - Amazon Logo
  • Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
  • Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Category described in the release Examples given Reported response to promotions
Preventive products Sun cream, insurance, helmets and health supplements Promotions had little impact on spending.
Promotional products Cosmetics, soft drinks, jewellery and experience-based purchases Customers were more likely to spend beyond the threshold.

These are categories and examples as reported by Durham, not product recommendations or independently verified classifications. The release does not explain whether every item within a category behaved the same way.

What the finding does—and does not—show

The commercial point is that a discount can cost a retailer less than the additional spending it encourages, though the release does not quantify that effect. Its account does not establish that all carefree shoppers spend more, that every promotion increases spending, or that the pattern holds across all retailers and customers.

Rank #3
One4all Physical Gift Card
  • Sometimes a shopping spree is just the thing to make their day!
  • Give a gift they can spend on a new outfit, something for home, or a little extra self-care.
  • Exchange this RETAIL THERAPY One4all Favorites Gift Card at redeem.giftcards.com for a choice of eGift(s) to spend at one or more of these brands: Gap, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Panera Bread, The Cheesecake Factory, Ulta Beauty, Wayfair.
  • Redemption: Online exchange required before use. Visit redeem.giftcards.com and enter card details to select the eGift(s) you want from the participating brands.
  • No Returns or Refunds on gift cards.

The headline wording about shoppers being likely to receive retail discounts can be misleading if read as a consumer tip. The described result concerns how shoppers responded after encountering minimum-purchase offers. The release discusses how retailers might tailor promotions; it does not provide a method for consumers to prompt discount codes.
