If Hindi (Devanagari) appears as empty boxes in a CaptureKit screenshot, first check that the page’s font files load and that your CaptureKit request does not block them. Then make sure capture waits long enough for fonts to load. The available documentation describes these possible causes and controls, but does not establish a CaptureKit-specific Hindi rendering bug or identify the cause on any particular page.
Why Hindi text may appear as boxes
A box usually means the rendering environment did not display a glyph for a character. For this symptom, investigate three conditions: whether the page’s chosen font covers Devanagari, whether the browser can fetch that font, and whether the screenshot is taken before font loading finishes. The actual cause depends on the page’s CSS, font delivery, and capture request.

Diagnose the page before changing the screenshot request
- Open the target URL in a browser. Check whether Hindi displays correctly there. If it also appears as boxes, investigate the page’s font stack and font delivery before focusing on CaptureKit.
- Inspect the computed font stack. In the browser’s developer tools, inspect the Hindi text and identify the font the browser uses. Confirm that the selected font includes Devanagari glyphs; the available documentation does not identify a specific font as the right fix for your page.
- Check font requests in the Network panel. Look for the relevant stylesheet and font-file requests, and check whether they succeed. A missing or failed font request can leave the browser without the intended glyphs.
- Compare the browser and screenshot under consistent conditions. Keep the URL, viewport, browser or host environment, and relevant settings as consistent as possible. Playwright notes that screenshot rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode (Playwright screenshot documentation).
Check CaptureKit for blocked font requests
CaptureKit’s API reference documents controls for blocking resource types, including fonts, and for blocking URLs by pattern. Review the request for block_resources=font and any block_urls rule that could match the page’s stylesheet or font host. Allow the necessary requests and capture again. See the CaptureKit API reference for the documented request options.

Be careful not to block only the obvious font-file URL: a URL pattern might instead catch the stylesheet that declares the font, or a shared host serving multiple resources.

Wait for fonts before capturing
A page becoming visible is not necessarily the same as its fonts being ready. CaptureKit documents wait_until, wait_for_selector, and a delay parameter. Use a condition appropriate to the page, and treat a short delay as a diagnostic rather than proof that the font loaded.

await document.fonts.ready;MDN explains that document.fonts.ready resolves after document fonts have loaded, layout operations are complete, and no further font loads are needed (MDN: FontFaceSet.ready). This is a browser-side option when your automation flow allows page-script access. CaptureKit’s hosted API reference does not say that it automatically waits for this promise, so do not assume that it does.

If you only have CaptureKit request controls
- Use an appropriate
wait_untilcondition for the page. - Use
wait_for_selectorfor a relevant element if its presence indicates the content has appeared. This alone does not confirm the font file has loaded. - Try a short delay to test whether timing is involved, then compare with a run that can verify font readiness if possible.
- Keep font resources and their stylesheet URLs out of resource- and URL-blocking rules.
Compare runs to isolate the cause

Change one condition at a time where practical. Otherwise, a successful capture may not show which adjustment mattered.

Troubleshoot persistent boxes
- Hindi is boxed in the browser too: inspect the page’s computed font stack and font requests; verify Devanagari coverage and successful delivery.
- Hindi is correct in the browser but boxed in CaptureKit: check resource and URL blocking, then investigate capture timing.
- A delay fixes it inconsistently: a delay is only a timing diagnostic. Use a font-readiness check where the integration permits it, and repeat in the same environment.
- Results differ between machines or runs: compare like-for-like environments because screenshot rendering can vary with host and browser conditions.
- The font loads and the page renders correctly in the same environment, but CaptureKit still shows boxes: send CaptureKit support the target URL, request parameters, capture timestamp, and a minimal reproducible page. This is a practical escalation suggestion, not a documented vendor procedure.
