Sometimes—but compare the laptop’s full monthly cost with the VPS bill after bandwidth, not just the advertised server price. For a 30-day month, a device running continuously uses average watts × 0.72 kilowatt-hours. Multiply that by your local electricity price, then add a fair monthly share of the laptop’s purchase cost and any additional internet or reliability costs. For a VPS, add compute, outbound-transfer overages, storage, and other charges. The answer also depends on whether your setup must encode video in real time or can send a pre-encoded file.
How to calculate the real monthly cost
Used laptop running at home
For a 30-day month, estimate electricity with this formula:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
average watts × 0.72 × local electricity price per kWh
The 0.72 factor converts continuous power draw over 30 days into kilowatt-hours: watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000. Use the laptop’s measured draw while doing the actual streaming job, ideally measured at the wall with a plug-in electricity monitor. A processor’s advertised TDP or the wattage printed on a power adapter is not the same thing as the device’s average power use.

Then add the part of the purchase cost you want to allocate to each month. For example, if you choose to spread the cost over an expected useful life of 36 months, divide the purchase price by 36. That period is your budgeting assumption, not a guaranteed laptop lifespan. Add any incremental internet, backup power, cooling, or reliability expense that the always-on setup creates.
Putting your local electricity price in the formula keeps the estimate tied to your actual tariff. If power rates vary by time of day, use a rate that reasonably reflects when the device will run.

VPS rented from a provider
For a VPS, calculate the monthly compute plan plus any outbound-transfer overage and relevant storage or other charges. A plan’s headline price is not the full cost if its included traffic is too low for a continuous video stream.

As of the pricing information retrieved on October 3, 2026, DigitalOcean lists these Basic Droplet prices and transfer allowances:
| Basic Droplet | Included transfer | Monthly listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Basic plan | 500 GiB | $4/month |
| Basic plan | 1,000 GiB | $6/month |
| Basic plan | 2,000 GiB | $12/month |
DigitalOcean lists additional outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB. These are provider list prices, not a promise that any of these plans can encode your video workload. Check current plan terms and billing details before choosing a server.
Why video bandwidth changes the VPS comparison
A stream running continuously for 30 days sends a large amount of data. Before protocol overhead, the estimate is:

- Intel Celeron Dual-Core Processor Up to 2.60GHz, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD

Mbps × 1,000,000 bits/second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8
| Continuous bitrate | Estimated transfer in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | About 1.62 TB decimal, or about 1.47 TiB |
| 6 Mbps | About 1.94 TB decimal, or about 1.76 TiB |
These are derived estimates before protocol overhead, not provider measurements. Decimal TB and binary TiB/GiB are different units. At 5 Mbps, the estimated monthly traffic is above 500 GiB but below 2,000 GiB, before overhead. The 1,000 GiB allowance also falls short of that estimate. Depending on the selected plan and its billing rules, outbound overage can therefore materially change the VPS total.
Does the setup have to encode video in real time?
This is a key distinction when choosing hardware. If you are sending an already encoded video stream, the machine’s job can be different from a setup that captures or processes input and encodes it live. Do not assume a low-cost VPS can encode a live stream simply because it can send one. The required compute depends on the encoding workload, resolution, frame rate, and software; validate that separately from the plan price.

YouTube supports software encoders running on a computer as well as hardware encoders. Its current guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, its recommended bitrate ranges include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are encoding recommendations, not estimates of a particular laptop’s power draw or a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode successfully.
Compare the options using the same assumptions
| Option | What to count | Best fit depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Used laptop at home | Electricity, allocated purchase cost, incremental internet and reliability expenses | Measured power draw, an existing or affordable suitable computer, and reliable home upload and power |
| VPS | Compute plan, transfer overage, storage, and other relevant charges | Whether the chosen server can handle the job, actual bandwidth allowance, and comfort maintaining a server |
| StreamNeo | Per-slot service price and included storage | A cloud-managed YouTube stream from uploaded videos, without keeping a home computer running |
For the laptop, include an appropriate share of the up-front cost rather than treating an already-owned machine as free indefinitely. For the VPS, include transfer at the intended bitrate. Then compare both against your requirements for upload speed, uptime and recovery, and the time you are willing to spend maintaining the setup.
Set up and check a do-it-yourself stream
The exact controls vary by encoder, but these checks apply whether the computer is at home or the server is rented. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings for your selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio format.

- Choose the workload first. Decide whether the system will encode video live or send a pre-encoded stream. Confirm the machine or server is appropriate for that job rather than relying on its price alone.
- Set the encoder to match the stream. Select a supported codec and frame rate, use CBR, and choose a bitrate within YouTube’s recommendations for the target resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s listed range is 5–14 Mbps; for 720p30, it is 3–8 Mbps.
- Configure the stream key securely. Use the stream key from the relevant YouTube live setup and enter it in your encoder. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public screenshot, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
- Check the network and power path. Ensure the available upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate, with headroom for normal variation. For a home laptop, consider what happens during a power or internet interruption; for a VPS, verify the server’s transfer allowance and monitor usage.
- Test before going live. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Check playback, audio, motion, and stability with representative content.
- Plan around the archive limit. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours should not be assumed to produce an automatic archive of the full stream; plan separate recordings or other retention as needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The same product is available on each plan; only the billing length changes. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
When each route is likely to make sense
- A used laptop may cost less when its measured electricity use is modest, the allocated purchase cost is low, and home power and internet are already reliable. It still requires the computer and connection to stay available.
- A VPS may cost less when the full compute and transfer bill is below the laptop’s electricity and purchase-cost share, and the selected server can perform the actual workload. Include overage rather than deciding from the base price.
- A hosted cloud service may suit you better when avoiding local hardware and server maintenance is worth comparing against the DIY costs. Check its specific terms and price for your needs rather than treating it as equivalent to a general-purpose VPS.
There is no universal break-even price: plug in your measured laptop draw, local electricity rate, expected laptop life, stream bitrate, and the provider’s current transfer rules. Recalculate when any of those inputs changes.
