To change a page’s background color in Canva, select the background, choose Background color in the floating toolbar, then pick a solid or gradient tile. Use Add a colour to create a new tile. Canva’s help instructions, accessed October 7, 2026, say this feature is not available in Canva Docs.
Change the page color in Canva

Open your Canva design and select the page background.

In the floating toolbar, select Background color.

Choose a solid-color or gradient tile. To create a new tile, select Add a colour and choose the color you want.

If you can’t select the background
Another design element may be layered over the area you’re clicking. Try selecting an unobstructed part of the page background, or move or temporarily hide the overlapping element, then select the background and open Background color.
Choose a Brand Kit color or a gradient
Use a Brand Kit palette
The color panel can show palettes from a Brand Kit, and Canva’s instructions say you can choose a different Brand Kit from that panel. Select a tile from the palette to apply its color to the page.

Apply a gradient
Choose a gradient tile from the background color options. Canva says gradients can be applied to backgrounds and are free for all Canva users; see its gradient guidance.

What to know about Canva Docs
Canva’s Help Center states: “Adding or changing backgrounds isn’t available on Canva Docs.” The background-color steps above apply to Canva designs, not Docs. Source: Canva Help Center, Add a background.

Change colors elsewhere in a design
For an element rather than the page background, select the element and use its color tile and the color panel. Canva’s separate color guidance also explains replacing a color across the current page or all pages.
