Apple’s $34.99-a-month Apple Upgrade offer is a lease, not a lower-cost way to buy an iPhone 18 Pro. The $49.95 monthly Apple Card option finances a purchase, while paying the listed $1,199 starting price upfront buys the phone outright. Which costs less depends on whether you want to return the phone or keep it, along with your chosen storage, taxes, trade-in, and eligibility.
The US prices and terms below reflect Apple information checked on October 7, 2026. They can change; confirm the current configuration and checkout terms before committing.

Apple’s September 2026 announcement lists the iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199, ACMI at $49.95 per month for 24 months, and Apple Upgrade lease payments from $34.99 per month for 24 months. The installment and lease prices do not represent the same ownership outcome. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement describes the starting price and financing; Apple Upgrade’s live lease page sets out the lease framework.

Apple’s product-specific lease example is for a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro priced at $1,199: $34.99 monthly for 24 months, or $49.99 monthly for 12 months. Those lease figures exclude taxes and trade-in credit. Apple describes the arrangement as a consumer lease provided by Klarna, not a purchase or loan. The monthly amount pays for the lease, and keeping the phone requires using the purchase option at the end. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro lease example gives the model-specific figures and terms.

So the headline comparison—$34.99 versus $49.95—does not answer which option is cheaper for you. The first figure buys leased use under a return-or-purchase arrangement; the second is the monthly installment amount for a financed purchase at the announced starting price. To compare total outlay, include the storage you want, taxes, trade-in credit, financing eligibility, and what you will do with the leased phone at the end. Apple’s published figures do not establish a universal lowest-cost option.
Choose based on what you want to do with the phone
Choose the lease if returning or replacing the phone suits you
The lease may fit someone who expects to return the iPhone after the term or seek a new lease and upgrade, and who accepts the lease’s eligibility, return-condition, and end-of-term rules. A new lease is subject to eligibility; upgrading is not the same as owning the current phone.
Choose installments if you want to finance a purchase
ACMI is the relevant advertised option when you want installment financing for a purchase rather than a lease. Approval and checkout requirements apply, and the advertised 0% APR terms do not mean every related charge is necessarily financed at 0%: Apple says taxes and shipping may be treated separately at the card’s variable APR.

Pay upfront if you prefer not to use monthly financing
Paying the listed price upfront is the direct purchase route. The $1,199 figure is the announced starting price, not a guaranteed total for every configuration or checkout; taxes and selected storage can change what you pay.
What happens at the end of an Apple Upgrade lease?
Apple says a lessee can return the phone in good condition, enter a new lease subject to eligibility, or use the purchase option. You do not own the device through ordinary lease payments; ownership requires paying the applicable purchase fee.
If you take no action at the end of the initial term, Apple says the lease may continue month to month for up to six months, potentially with payment increases. If you take no action by the end of that extension, Apple says the purchase fee is charged. Review the current lease terms so you know the purchase amount and the actions and deadlines that apply to your agreement. Apple’s Apple Upgrade legal terms describe the end-of-term choices.

Eligibility, early exit, and possible extra costs
Apple Upgrade is available in the United States subject to eligibility and approval. Apple’s launch materials list age of majority, a valid SSN or ITIN, an accepted card, an Apple Account in good standing, a Klarna Account, and text-message verification among the lease requirements. For iPhone, the buyer must select an eligible carrier—AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon; prepaid carrier plans are excluded. Apple says the leased iPhone is unlocked, subject to carrier terms. - Device condition: A returned phone must meet Apple’s condition requirements; damage can result in fees.
- Loss, theft, or damage: Insurance is not included in the lease, and these events can create additional charges.
- Approval and checkout: Lease approval depends on eligibility and creditworthiness. ACMI separately requires qualification and credit approval, as well as eligible-carrier selection at checkout.
Do not confuse Apple Upgrade with the former iPhone Upgrade Program
Apple is transitioning customers away from its former iPhone Upgrade Program and directs them to Apple Upgrade, ACMI, outright purchase, or carrier financing. The legacy program was a 24-month 0% APR installment loan for an iPhone and AppleCare+, with an upgrade option that required a new application and return of the current phone.
