Then retry from Settings or Google Play. If the uninstall still fails, a work or school policy may block removal, or the app may be preinstalled and not permanently removable.
1. Confirm the app is no longer a device administrator
Android’s documented prerequisite is to unregister an existing device-admin app before uninstalling it. Open Settings and search for Device admin apps or Device administrators; the exact label and menu location vary by phone. Check the list for the app you want to remove and make sure its administrator status is deactivated. Changing a different permission, or deactivating a different app, does not unregister the affected app.

Android Developers explains this prerequisite in its device administration documentation. Samsung also recommends searching Settings for “Device admin apps”; its instructions are specific to its devices and should not be treated as a universal menu path: Samsung support.
2. Retry using a standard uninstall route
Once the app is no longer active as an administrator, try uninstalling it from its app information screen in Android Settings. Alternatively, Google documents this route in the Play Store:

- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Manage apps & devices, then Manage.
- Select the app and tap Uninstall, if that option is available.
Google’s general instructions are at Uninstall or disable apps on Android. The wording and availability of controls can vary by device and app.
3. If Android says “Uninstall not successful”
That message can appear when the app’s device-admin access is still active. Recheck the affected app’s status in the Device admin apps list, deactivate it if necessary, and retry the uninstall. Trend Micro documents this sequence for its own Mobile Security app, while AVG likewise describes deactivating its Android app’s device-administrator permission first. Their app-specific instructions illustrate the prerequisite; their menu details may not match your phone.

4. Check whether work or school management controls the app
Device-admin status and organization management are separate issues. An employer or school may have installed an app through policy or may prevent users from removing it. Google notes that a policy-installed app can show a message saying it cannot be uninstalled. Google Workspace administrators can also force-install apps and control removal settings.

If the phone or app is managed by your organization, contact its IT administrator; you may not have permission to change the policy yourself. See Google’s information about removing work or school apps and Google Workspace app-management settings.

5. Read the available uninstall option
In the managed Google Play flow, the available button helps distinguish a policy block from an app that cannot be permanently removed through that route:
- No Uninstall button: Google says the selected app cannot be permanently removed through that managed Play flow.
- Only Uninstall updates: The app’s updates can be removed, but the app itself cannot be permanently removed through that flow.
- Preinstalled app: Some apps included with a device can be disabled rather than uninstalled.
These options describe what the managed Play flow allows, not necessarily every control a device manufacturer may provide. Google explains the managed-app behavior in its managed Google Play documentation.

6. Get useful help if it is still blocked
If the standard checks do not identify the cause, give the device manufacturer or your organization’s administrator the details needed to diagnose it:
- Phone make and model, and Android version
- The app’s name
- The exact error message or the uninstall option shown
- Whether the phone is managed by an employer or school
- Whether the app still appears as an active administrator
There is no single settings path or universal fix for every manufacturer and management setup, so those specifics matter when requesting model-specific help.
