A monitor light bar is built mainly to light the work surface; for video calls, you may also need a separate light aimed at your face. Add a smart lamp or indirect room lighting when you want a more balanced, adjustable office. No single desk light automatically does all three jobs.
Which kind of light do you need?
Think of a home-office setup as three lighting jobs: the desk, your face in the webcam frame, and the room around you. Choosing for the wrong job is a common reason a light looks useful on paper but disappoints during calls.

How to choose the right one
1. Match the light direction to the task
For documents and keyboard work, compare monitor light bars. For calls, consider a dedicated face light or a diffused lamp positioned to illuminate you. For a more comfortable room, add indirect ambient lighting rather than asking a desk lamp to do everything.
2. Check the mount and camera clearance

3. Compare coverage and brightness claims carefully
Coverage figures can help you judge whether a bar suits a narrow or broader work area, but they do not establish how it will perform in your room. For example, BenQ states 63 × 40 cm coverage at 500 lux for ScreenBar Halo; BenQ’s standard ScreenBar page describes auto-dimming toward a recommended 500 lux. 4. Decide which controls you will actually use
Auto-dimming, physical controls, app adjustment, and video-call modes solve different problems. Before paying extra for “smart” features, confirm the specific light works with your monitor, operating system, and preferred smart-home ecosystem. 5. Layer room light for calls
A monitor bar can light the desk while a face light or diffuse lamp helps illuminate you. Add indirect room lighting if the background or surroundings remain dark.
